My tent wont go into nooks and crannies if I ditch the bag, because tent poles. However my sleeping bag coukd but I wouldnt want ut to get soiled so I don't know about that idea.
What shoes do you wear while you're backpacking? I did it a while back and while my big boots were great in the cold chilly morning, they restricted me while I was hiking.

Most hikers use trail runners for backpacking. I personally love using Altra LonePeaks
