Good question. My guess is a dark chi wizard in ancient China who did that. It makes no sense for Shendu to be surprised with Daolon Wong with is saying certain spells that can free him when Shendu was brought back in Ancient times.
It’s implied that his demon brethren also set him free at that time somehow. But it could also be some dark chi wizard in ancient times that freed him, or some rare occurrence like the power of an eclipse or the year of the dragon to open the netherworld that didn’t involve a portal like in the end of season 5 where Drago opened up the netherworld through the ground to release lesser demons.
Uncle’s lucky none of the villains target him directly. Because in truth he’s the greatest threat to them and provides the most Deus ex machinas on the show.
Didn't he try to trick her with a human disguise of a kid, to the point where she developed a crush on him? I remember that happening with one of the demon sorcerers.
