Ironically, at the moment of their deaths, they were every bit as close to the moon as neil Armstrong was, when he took his first step onto it's surface! What's crazy to think about is the number of people alive on earth, just think of how many watched that event in a live broadcast on their tell-a-vision in total amazement, and at least some of them were actually closer to the actual moon than the pos pretending he was standing on it. The cherry on top, Nixon placing a call to those hut and surprising them by asking what they wanted on their pizzas that he got delivered to them right there on the moon!!!!

They capsule the lunar astronauts returned to Earth in literally fell to Earth, un-powered, once it reached Earth orbit with help from the Command Module. The Lunar Ascent stage that returned the astronauts to Lunar orbit didn't need tremendous power because of the Moon's low gravity and because it didn't have to reach escape velocity to meet up with the command/service module in orbit. As of yet there have been no Mars missions that include a return to Earth, but that would require lots of power, yes.@@damnnyou8280
