So looking forward to you watching their lives - if you think any of the songs are amazing, the live version is ALWAYS better. there is no song that they haven't improved on in their stages/concerts. the musicality, the stage presence, the harmonies, the wide range of genres (they haven't met a genre that they haven't made their own), etc., you're going to LOVE SHINee.
"Juliette" is another one of the dozens of songs that was wrote by Jonghyun, SHINee's main vocalist. You might recognize the melody of the song because the song was originally a song by the American singer Corbin Bleu and it was called "Deal with It." When SM bought the rights to the song they kept the melody, but Jonghyun rewrote the lyrics. :D As you can see, Jonghyun was writing songs and making his mark almost from the beginning.
As you discovered, Jonghyun is known for his Michael Jackson-like vocals. That's just Jonghyun's classic high note style. Jonghyun is known for his MJ style cry and for sounding a little like Michael when he sings any of SHINee's classic R&B songs. Taemin is the one that dances like MJ, but it's Jonghyun that is the one that sounds like him. During "Juliette", Taemin was still growing into his voice, so he doesn't really have a whole lot of lines in this song, so instead they highlighted more of his dance skills.
As you mentioned, "Juliette" came out in 2009, so Taemin was a year older than in "Replay" -- he was almost 16 years old here. MInho is 17 years old here. Key is also 17. (Key does rap often, but he is a lead rapper and lead vocal, so he accompanies Minho a lot. Key is fluent in English and his rapping style has a more western flow.) Onew was 19 and Jonghyun had just turned 19.
Fun fact: In 2011, as part of their Japanese debut, they also came out with a Japanese version of "Juliette."
The glasses and masks they are wearing are crazy because they are supposed to be attending a sort of trendy version of a masquerade event like when Romeo and Juliet secretly meet each other at Juliet's family's costume masquerade ball. The SHINee boys are all supposed to be Romeo and they are searching for their Juliette.
This was also part of the era where SHINee started the trend of the colored skinny jeans. SHINee are known for their "school boy fashion/student look" and everyone started wearing colored skinny jeans at this time because of SHINee. They were some of the very first Idols to change up the fashion trend from baggy hip-hop looks to form-fitting clothing that showed off their athletic bodies. They are even trendsetters when it comes to fashion. Never following trends, but always creating them in everything they do. :D It is safe to say that the original trend of colored skinny jeans in the U.S. was probably a transplant from the trend that SHINee started. A lot of foreign idols over the years have told SHINee that the fashion trends they started in Korea were adopted by them in the U.S., Canada, China, Thailand, etc. That's how influential SHINee are.

To love SHINee is to understand how different they are with other SM artists or kpop groups in general. They are not the typical boy grps that follows any trend of dark, strong concept. They do their own concept with their own color. SHINee compared to other SM grps have more artistic control over all their songs since they have Jonghyun as their writer producer and Minho and Key as well who writes for their songs since debut.
SHINee is know for being kings of live vocals and it would be a great experience for you to watch their live their performances ♥️

I don’t get hanged up on any group because I feel they’re trying too much to bend on trends i literally only appreciate Shinee and GOT7 which somehow feels like their little brothers with their own style but also aside of other kpop groups style, I’m so waiting for to finish their military service so we get bops again
That's SHINee for you, pure greatness. And pretty much no one will argue with you on that fact. LOL :D "Sherlock" is a special song that combines 2 songs from SHINee's album "Clue" and "Note." That's why the title of this MV is "Sherlock (Clue & Note)" If you were to listen to the album you would see that they are two separate songs, but when combined they become "Sherlock." So, in the MV you hear the mashup of the two songs.

In the MV the boys are Sherlock-like detectives who are looking for clues in the spooky mansion. The 'ghost" girl -- who is played by Jessica Jung, the former member of Girls Generation, which is SHINee's senior sister group, also under SM Entertainment -- is helping SHINee solve a mystery by leaving them clues. At the end they realize that the girl they have been seeing and chasing after all day is actually the girl that was originally involved in the mystery when they find an article talking about her from many many years ago and they discover that they must have been seeing a ghost.
Jonghyun is the first one to sing in the MV with the powerful voice. Key is the one with the short blond hair with the star shorts and the one with the hat and the glasses. Taemin is the one with the long hair and the one with the top hat. Minho is the tall rapper that jumps over Key during the rapbreak. So, by process of elimination, the last member is Onew, who was the one sitting in the wingback chair.
This was the era of Taemin with long hair. Although, in the MV, Taemin's really long hair was a wig. If you notice he only has long straight hair during the dance breaks, but during the story sections his hair is much shorter and kind of curly. However, he really did grow his hair long for a while. Taemin with long hair is one of his most iconic looks. I didn't really like Taemin's wig look, but Taemin with naturally long hair is one of my favorites. (He is actually known for making girls jealous because his hair is so perfect.) Many people thing that Taemin with long hair made him look pretty like a girl, but I actually thing it's kind of a masculine look on him. "Sherlock (Clue & Note)" came out in 2012 -- 4 years after "Reply." So Taemin is now 17 in this MV.
Taemin's hairstyle also made him one of the most popular of the members with their Japanese fans. This was the era of when SHINee really started to solidify themselves as Japanese artists, so Taemin's look had Japanese fans gravitating to them. (SHINee debuted in Japan in 2011 and now they are considered one of the most popular artists in Japan. They are so popular that they are part of the mainstream music scene and most Japanese citizens don't even consider them foreign artists. They spend about 50% of their career in Japan, so they are fluent in Japanese and they have just as many Japanese albums and songs as they do Korean.They don't just remake Japanese versions of their Korean songs, but they produce songs exclusively for their Japanese albums as well.)
The choreography for "Sherlock" was created by Tony Testa a very well-known "Hollywood"-famous American choreographer who has also worked with some of the most famous artists, productions and dancers in the world, including Michael Jackson. "Sherlock" was the first time SM (or pretty much anyone in the Kpop industry) had ever used a famous choreographer, and at the time, it was the most expensive Kpop production ever. Once again, SHINee were trendsetters and because of SHINee's skill level, SM became the first to see the value in using a well-known choreographer to help create their dances and to strive for a level of choreography and video production that surpassed anything that had ever been done before. Today it's common place for Kpop companies to have really famous in-house choreographers, and to seek out people in the industry who are really making a name for themselves to choreograph for them, but SHINee was one of the first.
If you want to see the choreography for "Sherlock" better you should check out SHINee's "Sherlock" dance practice video and the performance version MV, or better yet, one of their live concert performances of "Sherlock." You know that SM is the one who set the trend or new concept. But music experts said that the only concept who others can’t copied are Shinee. Cuz their music is “not following the trend or mainstream” music. Cheers to our boy✨🥺😔
How I interpret the story in SHINee's "Ring Ding Dong" is, the song is about a sort of love at first sight and thoughts of that person keep ringing through your head, so much so that you start to become obsessed with them. It's more than just wanted to protect the girl or your love, but it's about wanting to have her all to yourself and not allowing anyone else to come between you, etc. (As the English part of the lyrics says, "Fantastic, elastic ..." because thoughts of that person are constantly bouncing around in your head.)
In the story in the MV: If you notice, at one point, you see all the members dressed in white and they are standing in an all white room looking into the mirror. However, the image they see in the mirror is not their reflection, but what seems to be their alter ego or inner self because you see their mirror images with brooding expressions and they have wings. But their wings are not white like an angel who is pure and good, they are grey like angels of darkness. So, maybe this is showing how their thoughts are not a pure and innocent love, but one of passion and possession, etc. You see them in the white room with the white clothes because I see that as showing how they are hiding their true selves -- on the outside people think they look innocent and pure, but once you get to know them they have far less pure intentions. When in their black and red outfits this is more their true selves. The only explanation I can see as to why they are shown lighting the candles without even touching them is a way to make it clear that they are different then what they seem and they may have "magical powers" that can be used to attract the girl and make her theirs, etc.
I interpret the butterfly they talk about in the lyrics, and the one you see them with in the MV, to represent the girl and how she is beautiful, and fragel and flits around in their life attracting them and distracting them, etc and they want to capture her and make her theirs.
Beyond that, I don't really have an explanation of anything else that is happening in the MV. Most of it I interpret as just part of the aesthetic of what was the new cool think and what they were doing with MVs in 2009. The boys' hair and clothing styles and the aesthetic of the MV was supposed to give them more of a bad boy image, to sort of contrast the fact that when they debuted with "Replay" they had a boy next door image and they were given the title as the nation's younger boyfriends -- people had a pure and wholesome image of them -- so they wanted to show that as SM's experimental boy group, people should never expect them to stay the same. SHINee will forever be changing up their image to show many different sides of themselves and all different styles of music and dance. "Ring Ding Dong" was showing a new side of SHINee. This was only SHINee's second comeback after debut, so it established their role as the ever changing and evolving group that was expected to keep setting trends and coming up with new concepts, styles and sounds.
Fun Fact: Minho's long hair and Jonghyun's "Lion" hairstyle in "Ring Ding Dong" is such an iconic look. But Minho always hated this hairstyle, LOL. He has never liked having long hair. He begged SM to allow him to cut his hair and it took a few weeks before they would let him do it. They made him wait until they were done promoting for this album because their hairstyles were part of the album's concept. And therefore, Minho has refused to ever grow his hair out again. ;P Also, almost all of SM's boy groups had similar hairstyles during this time period. :D Take a look at Super Junior or TVXQ in 2009. Their hair looked like this too. hehehe. This was just sort of the look for Korean entertainers back in the day. SHINee were setting tends even with their hair.
As you discovered, "Ring Ding Dong," is one of SHINee's most popular songs. This song came out in 2009 and this is totally the look and sound that was just becoming the new it thing back then.
And yes, "Ring Ding Dong" is such an iconic song and it's so catchy that it has been said that in Korea this song is banned from being played or listened too during college entrance exam time. When it first came out students complained that the song would get stuck in their heads and they couldn't concentrate on their studies or on the test. :D
This is also one of SHINee's Iconic choreographies and it is one of the dances that every rookie group in the industry, both boy groups and girl groups, are required to learn and know, and most have covered the song and dance at least once in their career even still today.
If you want to hear the song without the auto tune then you need to hear them perform it live in concert. SHINee always uses a lot less auto tune in their live performances. Try their live MBC music festival performance of "Ring Ding Dong" in 2016, ruclips.net/video/_lYurocLpi8/видео.html. This song was part of the era when auto tune was brand new and it was the new cool thing that everyone was using in their new songs. If you listen to almost any song from that time period, you are going to hear them experimenting with auto tune. This song was ahead of its time when it came out and it blew people away for its sound and style, which many had never heard before. :D
The Kpop industry looks to SHINee to show them what the next music style and dance will be. And SHINee are expected to always come up with something new and groundbreaking that has never been seen or heard before, not only for them, but for the industry as a whole. It is said, that everytime SHINee comes out with a new song and choreography, within 3 months you will see it being mirrored in every new comeback across the entire industry, both boy groups and girl groups. SHINee introduces a new trend and the industry takes notice and follows suit.
However, after more than a decade, the members have said on TV shows and in interviews that it has started to become kind of daunting for them every time they prepare for their next comeback, because after so many years in the industry they have pretty much done it all and it's getting harder and harder to find something unique and fresh. However, they still have not let us down. They have 12 (6 Korean and 6 Japanese) full length albums, several mini albums, solo albums numerous singles, etc. and somehow they have managed to keep coming up with something different every time. It will be interesting to see what they come up with for their next comeback at the end of this year or early next year, after being released from the military.
To fall in love more deeper in SHINee, their live concerts is an absolutely essential to watch. They slay everything perfectly. Despite all news group coming, SHINee is the best. You can't choose your bias, because they are all bias wrecker.

At that time, "Sherlock's" choreo was the most expensive choreo in Kpop. It was done by Tony Tesla who did Michael Jackson's "This Is It" tour.
Regarding Taemin's hair...yeah...Taemin had longer hair, but SM added extensions. They had a thing about making Taemin look like a girl, which really bothered Taemin for quite some time.
"Ring, Ding, Dong" was during the auto-tune craze. One thing these guys didn't need was auto-tune. In any case, this song was so addictive that Korea banned students from playing it during exams.
Jonghyun and Onew always had really good voices, Key too. In fact, Jonghyun was probably the best vocalist in Kpop. From 2008 to about 2012, Taemin was learning how to sing with the help of Onew and Jonghyun. That's why he has so few lines until later. Taemin was told by a vocal coach that he would never have a good voice. Don't ever tell Taemin he can't do something....lol. He practiced day and night to the point that he got nosebleeds everyday and kept falling asleep during practices. Thank you Jonghyun & Onew. Look at our maknae Taemin now! He was the first one in the group to go solo. (BTW: Taemin's release of Act II of his "Never Gonna Dance Again" album is 11/9! The title song is "Idea".)
If you think these were good, you should definitely check out their live performances. They are called "CD eaters" for a reason. Their live vocals are often better than recorded. They trained their voices to be stable during rigorous choreos by singing while running together.

Even if you don't do a video about it, I suggest you listen to their first full Album, The SHINee World from 2008. It's full of RnB vibes and I can say it's one of the best Kpop album out there.

Yesss i love this!!SHINee are truly the trendsetters of Kpop! they were the ones who made the skinny jeans become a trend in Korea. even now days in Korea if u ask anyone who made the skinny jeans popular their answer would be SHINee! Their songs are never the same and they are always ahead of their time . They did a retro song called "1 of 1" in 2016 and it's really good because it does give me a retro vibe. They were the first Kpop group to introduce the genre dubstep to Kpop with their song "Everybody' which was released in 2013 , And They were the first Kpop group to introduce the genre deep house to Kpop with their song "View". They are a group who always change their music sound and never afraid of challenges. I know u love ballads and SHINee has one of the most amazing ballads in the game and i really can't wait until u get to their live performances and hear their amazing vocals. SHINee are so big in Japan that's why they had a lot hiatus because of their Japan debut and all of the members of SHINee speak Japanese fluently. Jonghyun was my bias, and he was a beautiful singer....I miss him so....my favorite song was "Noona, You're So Pretty", Shinee was the r&b kings at the time, with great bops and dancing, and vocals... fantastic...and baby Taemin...I'm waiting for a comeback, but I know it's close to service time for Taemin, so I'm enjoying him with his solo work and SuperM while he hasn't left yet, the rest are finished with service I believe, but I wouldn't know if they are planning a comeback, I just assume it....Shinee is a favorite veteran group that are incredibly talented, I love them.....I thank them for hooking me up with kpop. 😊💙🌺

05/25 is SHINee's debut date. SHINee are the trendsetters. They're the experimental group and if what they do works, kpop follows.
I would do Married to the Music for the next video as it's the perfect Halloween song reaction! "Ring Ding Dong" is definitely a song of it's time but it's such a fun throwback that you can jam too. I think you are right when 2012 they become more polished. I think that's because they had really started to feel out their sound by then. They found what fit their voices and style and so it just feels so perfect. I would love to see more Shinee reactions and a guide! "A Very Shinee Guide" by Very Swank I think everyone agrees is the best one.

OMG YAY!!!! So excited for this new journey
Hi I'm a new subscriber just wanted to let you know how much fun it's been to watch your journey as you discover some of my favorite groups. I basically took a similar journey starting with Itzy then Exo then Taemin and Shinee to my beloved NCT and now the Boyz. It's a really stressful time here in the states due to the election but I filled it watching your pure joy discovering these awesome groups and your joy filled me with joy😊. So thank you so much 💚. I can go on about any of these groups but Shinee the golden boys of kpop are legendary. My fave songs include Dream Girl, Married to the Music, & Odd Eye which I know based on your love of ballads you'd love -there's no video so you would have to watch one of the high quality live performances there are several. Also hopefully you'll be exploring more of Taemin's solo work -watching his evolution from the 15 yr. old maknae of Shinee who was discouraged from singing and told to just dance to the reigning king of Kpop is so refreshing and just plain fun. He and Kai of Exo are childhood friends predating their trainee days. They have a song together written by Taemin 's Shinee bandmate Jonghyun called Pretty Boy only available to watch as a live but well worth checking out.
Haha.. finally you are reacting to SHINee. Thank you for appreciating their MVs even though some of it are decade ago as compared to those you've watched from new generation groups' modern MVs. Some reactors don't want to dive into it because of the production difference. But knowing SM, they're always ahead of the game so some of the MVs from before were not that bad compared to today's. The Year of Us album is one of my favorites. I hope you just don't react to MVs because SHINee have so many soulful and amazing ballads and that is the reason why I became a Shawol. Their Japanese ballads are on par with their Korean music as well, and the lyrics oh oh my.. haha.. got carried away..

SHINee is hinted at having a comeback sometime in 2021, we're all hoping for early 2021 but we'll see! Taemin has his next album (or well, Act 2 - 9 songs!) coming on November 9th!

PPS: wait, are you saying your birthday is on may 25 or is it just near? bc if SM likes dropping those singles for SHINee, the reason is that it's their debut anniversary (May 25, 2008), haha. You should watch their live performances, even better than their MVs. They always sing live, CDNEE eating their own CDs. I would suggest live performances of EVERYBODY, RINGDINGDONG, VIEW, DYNAMITE, LUCIFER, EXCUSE ME MISS and SHERLOCK. Lol, can't get over with Dynamite when Minho ripped his top open. Haha. Shinee was my first introduction to Kpop in 2018 and it was Ring Ding Dong (stuck in my head for months and drove me crazy lol). Then Everybody followed. The only other groups I like is Super Junior and BTS but Shinee has to be my favorite simply for being my introduction to Kpop. These are the only groups I like as far as Kpop goes. You can't deny that they are all very talented and have great charisma. BTS in particular, their talent and dancing surpasses any other act ATM.

Please do 'A not so "Unhelpful" guide to SHINee'!! I honestly think this is the best guide to Shinee out there! It covers all members well and picked out the better examples compared to other guides I have seen. They included what trended with Shinee in the earlier years and included good info with all 5 members which other guides didnt cover.
