Long ago, a BMW long-distance (online E46) buddy of mine told me awhile back, that there was NO need to buy THIS module, or ANY other module (offa' ebay) as ALL cabrios have this inherently already-CODED in them, but just need to buy a GOOD code reader/recoder (iCarly?) & all'sya gotta DO is CHECK off the box on the PC, then plug in that re-coder into the cabrio & it will be be re-coded via the key fob. Same w/ just 1-press windows down via fob. Is THIS true? (or was my buddy BS'ing me?) ie. Don't WASTE $400 bucks?? Do post your thoughts/insight on this...thx in advance!
Wait a minute... if you engage one touch open and close... do you lose the ability to stop the roof at certain positions? You need this ability if you need to do any work inside the areas that are obstructed or hidden by the folded roof. Like the rear top shock mount replacement procedure.

Getting ready to replace an orignal head unit/Nav on my 06' E46 vert and while building out parts list had a question regarding accessories for Android head units. 1 - Can't ALL the functions of the SmartTopModule be accommodated via ENCODING using the K-Bus(iBus) USB adapter (modBMW / Rensler) you previous showed connected to android head? Specifically the One-touch convertible top open/close, and speed sensor override/threshold. OR is the SmartTopModule needed to add functions shown (as PERHAPS they are not available in the coding for the car since one can only CODE what BMW allows unless you add circuit to drive Kbus directly)? (Yes I am/was software engineer)... 2 - I know you mentioned in a third video how to use Carly to encode key fob control of convertible top & windows. Assume that the K-bus adapter for E46 with Android app would CERTAINLY provide all THIS as this is factory standard (assuming the app has been programmed to display as an option like you showed in the Carly video). 3 - Assuming that the USB adapter CAN'T code speed override & add one-touch functionality is there any suspected issue with having BOTH USB and this top module present on the Bus? One would again ASSUME not since the stick doesn't need to know about the module addition, but likely also means that I couldn't use the one tap from the Key Fob. What’s the factory way to open & close the top? I can only close & open mine with the key on engine off. I purchased this module for my E46 and after setting up all the parameters on a laptop via their software, installing the latest firmware, and checking and re-checking all connections, the item doesn’t work at all. At one point the green light blinked as it’s suppose to do, and all it allowed was all windows to go down all the way and that was it. Only a steady green light stays on and nothing works. I’ve contacted the manufacturer and waiting for a reply. I’ve only owned my 2003 E46 M3 for a couple months now so not sure of the service history (if any) on the soft top. Perhaps a sensor is out. Any help would be appreciated.
