It looks awesome! Well done. The speckling from the can could be due to the way you are holding it, ie... pointing it downwards. Or it could be if the can hasn't been shaken enough before use.

Great video... my threads have rusted and was trying to find out what I needed to use to replace them. I had my van resprayed and wanted everything to look new. I have one question. At the top there are detachable rubber pieces that go between the rack and the tailgate, are there ones at the bottom?? if there are I have lost them :(
Cheers Simon! I think I know what you mean. Do the bottom pads just rest on a tiny lip and there’s a 5mm gap between the rest of it? Because that’s what mine looks like too and it’s meant to look like that. It doesn’t look right does it?

Thank you Nick! I have a couple of marks from smacking the pedals on it when I go to lift the bike in place but other than that it’s fine. I definitely don’t regret it. It seems harder to scratch compared to when I first did it, like the paint has gone hard or something. Still looks cool!

Thanks! I really appreciate it! I think you might make things a bit harder for yourself but you could still do it. You definitely need to take the arms that hold the bikes in place off. You can quite easily take the rails that hold the wheels in place off too. You should be fine leaving the rest in place though. Hi, sorry for the late reply. It’s probably too late now but it’s from Tool Station. It’s m8 and I got 3 lengths of 1m. I cut all lengths about 10mm longer than the original threaded bar because I was struggling to open the jaws wide enough to fit my bike and my friends bikes in. Hope that helps 😊
The Slowworms All sorted - Thanks. I may have to extend the longest arm at some point, as the Thule handle sometimes comes off when opening the jaws fully.
Flying_Scotsman yeah, making them longer really helps. I guess bike frame tubing must’ve gotten wider. Other than one of your arms being too long, how’s the bike rack?
I didn’t sand it but I did prime it. That’s watch the etch primer was. It’s holding out really well. I’ve only got two chips on it from where my pedals have bashed against it
I’ve got three small spots where paint has some come off in the same area, but I don’t know where it’s come from. I think it might’ve been where I’ve bashed the pedals on the rack when I’ve put a bike on or taken it off. That happened after about six months of spraying it and I haven’t had any chips since.
Hi Byron 👋 It doesn’t seem to have any scratches on it. I think it would scratch though with enough pressure. It seems to have flaked in two places either from the heat or where the straps bang against it in the wind whilst driving down the road. That’s probably to do with my painting technique though 😆

I have done one coat of base coat so far and it has taken x2 cans. When you said it took 3 cans - did you mean x2 cans of base coat and x1 can of top coat - so one coat of primer and one coat of top coat? Or did you mean x3 cans of base coat (probably could do x2 coats - just) and x3 cans of top coat - x2 coats of each?! I know the cans say multiple thin layers, but I would worry about getting it all back together with all those coats? Thanks again!
I only painted over the plastics parts that are attached to the main body of the bike rack because they were too hard to get off without any damage. I didn’t paint over the plastic caps on the ends of the rails and the plastic caps on the ends of the part that folds down. I could’ve easily painted all the plastic parts though because the finish actually looks pretty good 👍

In the end I used 3. I should’ve held the can a bit closer though so you could probably get away with two maybe

yeah, it is. I got it second-hand from facebook marketplace for £200. I was pretty chuffed with that 😄
