yes, i’m a big fan of mgk but even I admit emo girl is terrible, definitely should’ve been left off the album if he wanted to be taken seriously in the rock community
Pop punk originally felt like an attempt to make the punk ethos a more listenable and catchy. MGK's brand of pop punk feels like he's trying to make music for dejected 12- to 16-year-old teens who got their phone taken away for texting in class. WW4 is especially guilty of this, "Your teachers are full of shit, you don't need to go to school." I agree with Anthony's take on the 'fake punk vs. real punk' shitpile, but it really feels like MGK has found a way to water down punk to it's most easily digestible format. A drop in a gallon.
I think Pop punk was always about appealing to that age demographic, just look at 2000s pop punk with bands like Green day or Blink 182, the majority of the listeners back then were between that age
This is why I always respected the lane Lil Peep was in. He could make pop records but he knew his core was hip hop and he did a great job blending the two together making an original sound for him. I like some of MGK songs but I see what people mean about it sound really teenagerish. If he would have a more mature approach and talk about deeper topics i'm sure he wouldn't of gotten that label. But i agree it is a lil teeny bopperish
> music for dejected 12- to 16-year-old teens who got their phone taken away for texting That's exactly what 2000s pop-punk was about though, which is obviously the nostalgia that MGK aims for.
"MGK's brand of pop punk feels like he's trying to make music for dejected 12- to 16-year-old teens who got their phone taken away for texting in class" That's what pop punk has always sounded like
As a man in his early/mid 20s, it's very sad to his his half assed pop punk music making huge waves in my age demographic. I believe this is due to the fact that we are just old enough to remember the pop punk wave and now it's nostalgia bait.
The only saving grace I can see from MGK is that he introduces younger listeners to the genre and serves as a gateway for them to get into the real stuff... here's hoping lol
I’d say the last 6 years rappers have embraced punk more. Except those artist were a lot more genuine and effective in writing pop punk music for the younger generation. Clearly MGK is just cashing in on a craze Juice Wrld popularized.
tbf i liked the album and mgk's latest songs but emo girls is just utter trash wtf is ''i fell in love with an emo girl'' ????? this is literally 90% of the song and williow makes it worse
Punk is about going against the grain and actually not giving a fuck, MGK's music has no substance and doesn't say anything. He (and most other pop-"punks") are not victims of gatekeeping, they get backlash for commercializing rebellion and appropriating the aesthetic without understanding what made it punk.

Soulless isn't the issue but more like it's following tropes of pop punk and when Mgk talks about some serious issues it comes across like he's trying to make it cool. Like how some women intentionally date terrible men because they want the roller-coaster relationships they see on soap operas.
@@aggmang You gotta be either an incel or a teenager saying something like that. Vast majority of the women I know do not date terrible men. There are plenty of them out there.

I think that first album worked as a gimmick, and it's so dependent less on MGK himself but on the production. But everything I've heard since has been either mediocre or out right bad. And a lot of that comes down to just how uncharismatic the man's voice is.

Calling them unoriginal is simply not true
I feel so sad for people who are nostalgic for pop punk and are seeking that sound from MGK. There are so many artists cropping up all over the place who deserve the attention so much more. It's just that Kelly gets it all because he's successfully monopolized his own image and cultivated a niche
I feel like even the cover art symbolises him being too on the nose with this one. Compared to the last album cover which was forced to be changed at the last minute. Which is just him standing by his empty pool in his own backyard. I think symbolises the punk aesthetic and motto of DIY. Where as this one feels like he’s a little toddler taunting critics.
There has never been a musician that Ive so actively avoided and disliked in my life. All the bad pop and radio country that I thought I hated before pales in comparison to MGK. I generally dont think hating a person because their music sucks is justified but this guy has proven me wrong.
#1 on billboard is not an accolade? You don’t have to like him, musically or as a person. He is a popular artist, and if you think he’s not, you’re just lying to yourself.
@@seancoleman8183 He is definitely a popular artist, I think getting #1 on a billboard is a reflection of that. but is that really all it takes? his stuff is... u know what its actually starting to make sense I just thought some of the artist that collabed with him wouldve had more dignity or somthing.

It’s really sad that people put him on a pedestal not just as an artist (he’s literally the Greta Van Fleet of Pop Punk) but as a person. He’s a creep & a narcissist who thinks that 2 average - albeit way better than his rap career - pop punk albums redeems him & make him the saviour of guitar music. Even calling him the GVF of pop punk is way overselling him. Can attest I wasn't remotely a fan of van fleet until I saw them live. But yeah they both have terribly mixed albums
These 2 pop punk albums he's put out are very, VERY far from average. They're literally among the worst pop punk released in the last 20 years, and that is quite the accomplishment given the glut of absolute slag released in the genre.

Pop punk originally felt like an attempt to make the punk ethos a more listenable and catchy. MGK's brand of pop punk feels like he's trying to make music for dejected 12- to 16-year-old teens who got their phone taken away for texting in class. WW4 is especially guilty of this, "Your teachers are full of shit, you don't need to go to school."
I agree with Anthony's take on the 'fake punk vs. real punk' shitpile, but it really feels like MGK has found a way to water down punk to it's most easily digestible format.
But i agree it is a lil teeny bopperish
> music for dejected 12- to 16-year-old teens who got their phone taken away for texting
That's exactly what 2000s pop-punk was about though, which is obviously the nostalgia that MGK aims for.

I’ll say this, atleast his album title is honest.
If he’s being hailed as the ‘Prince Of Pop Punk’ what does that say about the state of the scene?
Even calling him the GVF of pop punk is way overselling him. Can attest I wasn't remotely a fan of van fleet until I saw them live. But yeah they both have terribly mixed albums
These 2 pop punk albums he's put out are very, VERY far from average. They're literally among the worst pop punk released in the last 20 years, and that is quite the accomplishment given the glut of absolute slag released in the genre.
the difference is that GVF is just bland, where MGK is just bad
No one is calling him that other than a minority of his 14 y/o fan base with no music perspective. You need to have some perspective, stop thinking niches in social media marketing represents the masses perception of the music scene. No one above the age of 18 is bumping mgk, relax.
These albums are definitely not better than his rap albums. That’s not to say those albums were good either but at the very least it was somewhat listenable
