Think about it, who was there with Brian in the Bahamas when he wrote it?
Mutt Lange, the most prolific writer and producer of that era, he's the one that filled in all the blanks, not Bonn's ghost, I just can't believe that people can't put two plus two together on that one.

Part of AC/DC’s appeal is that true fans know how great they are and don’t need a radio top 40 list to confirm it.
To think that “Money Talks” is their highest charting hit is a travesty. They have so many iconic hits that if you listen carefully to American sporting events you’ll hear “Hells Bells” or “Thunderstruck” in the background, how many movies have used “Shoot To Thrill” or “Back in Black” , etc, etc.
I don’t care who gets credit, AC/DC rocks and I like both dudes. Brian has always paid huge respects to Bon and Bon saying that Brian was replacement for him if something were to happen to him is good enough for me. The fact that Axl Rose thought it an honor to complete the Rock or Bust tour is a testament to how other legends feel about AC/DC’s status in the rock world.
I hope, and I think I speak for all the AC/DC fans worldwide, that the rock gods put together one last tour in support of their “Power Up” album. It’d be a fitting tribute to Malcolm and one last chance for us fans to show the band how much we love them and appreciate their always delivering pure, unadulterated rock n roll.

An old friend of mine read Fink's book and we went back and forth for hours arguing about this. From my perspective (team Brian) I had a couple of conclusions: 1) It felt like Bon was family to the Youngs, an older brother who they looked up to and a firm partner in the the band. If they nicked a bunch of lyrics from Bon's notebooks why wouldn't they give him credit? The album was a tribute to Bon's memory, so it would be absolutely apropos to give him credit where he deserved it. 2) From every anecdotal source I've ever heard talk about Brian he comes off as one of the most big-hearted and nicest guys on the planet and so why would he enter into this conspiracy with the Young brothers to disrespect Bon's memory like this? 3) I can only conceive that the only reasons why they would cut Bon out of the songwriting credits would be a combination of utter greed and to give Brian instant credibility as the new lead singer. I would hate to believe that the Youngs were capable of something like that just months after burying their friend and that Johnson would go along with it.

His notebooks dissappearing was as suspicious as his death. I can completely understand Malcolm not crediting Bon simply because it would not sit well, as a whole, with the new spirit de corps of the new set up. There is a story of how he went to see Bon's parents to explain the situation , where as it would look better to have the new guy write them. However, the band would give Bon's royalty shares to the Scott family. That makes a lot of sense to me. Malcolm was a closed shop when it came to disclosing anything.

@ Stephen Brown Such a perfect album ! I also have such awesome memories of hearing "You Shook Me All Night Long" blaring from the Trans Am's of the cool guys in our Junior High parking lot which induced me to buy "Back In Black"... my first heavy album as a 12 year old !... Really my first "adult" album, really...
That year, it was just before grading, exams were over, just waiting for report cards, and I was running back to school from lunch via a short cut on a path through the woods and I was running really fast, making good time when I tripped on a small stump and fell into a smashed broken beer bottle. When I got up there was a curved piece of broken glass imbedded in the palm of my hand that I had to pull out and it was GUSHING blood ! So I jammed my hand in the crook of my other elbow to keep pressure on it, just SOAKING my faded jean jacket with blood and started to retrace my path back home, but I knew with the loss of blood that there would be no way I'd make it, so I stopped a younger girl I knew whose mother I knew was a nurse and asked her if her mom had gone to work yet and she hadn't, so she took me to her home and her mom bandaged my hand and drove me down to the hospital she worked at a couple of hours early for her shift lol. I remember so vividly being in the emergency room bed, my mom arriving and the doctor examining my wound. My mom was describing the doctor feeling around in the wound for foreign debris and my mom was showing me that "he's got his finger in there like this !" and she mimed her finger rotating around inside the gap between her thumb and index finger of her other hand LOL and I was like near fainting and throwing up LOL. And then when it came time to stitch it up, the bed next to mine had a drunk guy getting his stomach pumped and he was thrashing around and making the curtain between our cubicles wave wildly and the doctor's hands were shaking nervously as he was inserting the needle to freeze my hand for stitches LOL..
So there I was, the first month of summer vacation with my hand bandaged up, couldn't go swimming or playing in the woods or any baseball or anything, just up in my room with a record player / stereo system that I had just got for grading for my room that I had just moved into up in the attic a few months before and my first adult album I got for it, "Back In Black" and because I didn't have the full use of my hand I just played, and played repeatedly over and over that entire album all summer !
      GOOD TIMES !
... It just occurred to me how cool it would have been if my mom had kept that bloodied jacket and if I had covered it with AC⚡DC patches and pins ! hardly washing the stains out !... FUCKING AWESOME ! Talk about "If You Want Blood You Got It" !

    Lifetime fan of AC⚡️DC.
I was 16 yrs old when this album released.
KISW, "Seattle's best rock" radio station in Seattle played it CONSTANTLY.
We were all Bon Scott fans after "Highway to hell" had seduced us into loving AC/DC.
Many of us had a hard time getting into Brian Johnson's voice though.
I still hear some of my friends debate this.
But the proof is in the puddin.
I've seen AC/DC every time they have visited Seattle or Tacoma.
I have learned to play most of Malcolm Young's rhythm parts on the guitar.
    They're easy to play.
    But HE invented them.
He IS, and WAS, truly a rock guitar icon and an artist.
    Then there is Angus.
    OMG... ANGUS.
    I love that guy.
AC/DC's rhythm section with Cliff Williams and Phil Rudd is simplicity perfection.
Never missing their mark or timing LIVE.
As accurate as an atomic clock.
You could adjust the timing on your cars engine with Cliff and Phil.
    Love this band FOREVER!!!!

There are only three bands that literally define rock and roll: the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and of course AC/DC. If I had to pick only one song to represent the genre, probably “Thunderstruck”, but there are probably two dozen AC/DC songs that would serve equally well. No other band even comes close to the number of genre-defining songs.

    Reunion Arena, Dallas 1983.
My memory could be a tad off but what I recall is most of the crowd didn’t know about wireless electric guitars at the time. They absolutely gobsmacked the arena that night.
The Defining moment of the night was Bon Scott getting on Angus Young’s shoulders and circling the floor of the arena while angus was wailing on a guitar we couldn’t believe it was happening! I wish I could recall the exact song but man it was one for the books!

It’s the overall bludgeoning stomp sound of this album that made ‘Back in Black’ what it is.Mutt Lange put the instruments up In the front of the mix making it sound massively heavy.

    • @livewire2759
      @livewire2759 2 года назад +3

If you think BIB is heavy with the instruments "up in the front of the mixing", listen to Let There Be Rock, produced by George Young in '77. If anything, Lange held them back, making them more appealing to the more "pop rock" oriented audience in the US at the time, which is exactly why they hired him. The Highway to Hell, Back in Black and For Those About to Rock era (all produced by Lange) is the closest AC/DC ever came to "selling out".

In 1980 I was a 14 year old AC/DC fan and would call the local rock station to request their lesser played songs such as What’s Next to the Moon. I got to know the DJ pretty well because we would talk about the group and other artists. We became friends and when I was 16, I would go to the station during his night shift, sometimes with a friend, to hang out and answer the request lines.
When I was 18, we began to date for a while, but the difference in ages was just too insurmountable. I still have a place in my heart for him.

George Harrison stated that he wrote 3 lines of Eleanor Rigby and some of the lines in Come Together, but received no credit, nor royalties. He wasn’t complaining, but just stating that’s how song writing goes. Similarly, with You Shook Me. Maybe there were some of Bon’s short phrases borrowed or changed, but in my humble opinion, the Young’s and Brian deservedly received credit for writing the song.

The fact that the album was recorded in 6 weeks, and that Johnson only joined the band a month after Bon's death, leads me to believe the majority of the music and lyrics had to have been close to completion when they started recording. Now, that's not to say there weren't changes along the way during the actual recordings and in post-production. But my guts tell me that Bon co-wrote most of the songs, but Brian took them and put his own 'stank' on them making them his own.

I love both the Bon and Brian versions of AC/DC. But listening to "Thunderstruck", Brian's best vocals were shot by then. Compare his voice on "Hell's Bells". Not even close. But singing like he did, would damage anyone's pipes. AC/DC will always be one of my favorites.

Put yourself in the band's position in February of 1980. 'Highway to Hell' was a hit, and they knew that their next album was either going to make them, or break them. Malcom, Angus and Bon were all in London in February for the purpose of writing & arranging the 'Back in Black' album. Bon's job was to listen to the songs, and write lyrics for them. The friends he went out with on the night he died said that Bon was ready to celebrate because he had finished writing the lyrics and wanted to blow off some steam before going into the studio to start recording it.
Their record label was drooling, pushing them to finish this record ASAP, so they could strike when the iron was hot, ready to invest in AC/DC more then they ever had. The wheels were more than in motion, the machine was in full roar, just waiting for the record. Tour dates, publicity, pressing, recording studios, the lot.
    Then Bon died.
"Ah crap" said everybody. The record company had a mint already invested, throwing in the towel just wasn't an option. They NEEDED an AC/DC album to release. Quick (within weeks) they had a replacement in place. The lead singer position is the hardest position to replace in a band. 9 times out of 10, the fans will reject the new singer, so they ALL NEEDED Brian Johnson to be accepted by the fans. So, are they going to put out another Bon Scott penned record? "Hey everybody, this guy is just singing Bon's stuff? He's a hired hand?" No way. They needed it to be a Brian Johnson record. They needed to give him the best chance possible to be accepted, and the record company the best chance possible to profit. They hadn't put all of this money into the band to put out one record and then call it quits because the man who wrote their stuff was gone They wanted long term AC/DC money, AC/DC wanted a long term career. Understandable, in both counts.
If you read the lyrics, it's very obvious that Bon Scott's whiskey soaked fingerprints are all over 'Back in Black.' He was a great, (and deceptively clever) lyricist. Look at where their lyrics went from 'For Those About tot Rock' on. I love AC/DC and Brian Johnson, but to say they went steadily downhill lyric-wise after 'Back in Black' is pretty plain to read.
So what did Brian Johnson do? Only put down arguably the GREATEST hard rock vocal performance by a singer on a record ever. He NAILED 'Back in Black.' I love Bon, but I don't think that anyone could have sang that record better than Brian Johnson did in 1980, and Brian's voice has kept the band red hot as a concert attraction for over 40 years now... and counting! With the way he sings, that is nothing short of incredible. By all accounts, he is a really friendly, modest, approachable and down to Earth man as well. I have no problem saying that Brian Johnson EARNED every penny he ever got from AC/DC.
There is the issue of money. When you have the 2nd best selling album of all times, the writers of the tracks stand to make a LOT of cash. In fact, it is a very poorly kept secret in the music business that songwriting credits are often used as salary considerations more than they are considered creative credits. The musicians only get paid the big bucks if they are named as one of the songwriters.
In the end, does 'WHO' wrote it matter as much as who got 'PAID' for it? For the fans, sure it does. For the artists? Well... So are they going to open up a whole new legal kettle of fish now? Pick Brian Johnson's pocket? The man who has put in over 40 years of hard work and (not for nothing) the guy whose VOICE is actually on the record? No way. Bon's family has never complained. They may have even been in on the deal. The band was always very generous, and took care of Bon's parents long after Bon died. Probably even long after Bon's notebook was all used up.
TLDR FINAL (personal) VERDICT: Bon Scott wrote 'Back in Black,' but Brian Johnson's talent launched it into orbit. In my opinion, they both earned what they got. You can write the greatest song ever, but without an amazing performance of that song, no one would ever hear it.

This is coming from a Bon Scott fan, Bon may have wrote it but Brian owned with his vocals, I believe Bon would have loved that his mates carried the band on and turned many Black in Back fans onto Bon's work. I know many people that didn't know Bon's stuff until after this smash album. I will always be a Scott fan first and foremost but Brian's work turn on fans to AC/DC and help sell their previous albums. 3 chords and the truth ,well as close to the truth as we can get, lol, great episode!

    A few things to consider;
Brian' s contribution to the 3 or 4 Geordie albums was only co-writing about 4 or 5 songs. Unless he wrote a ton of material and it simply wasn't used, he wasn't a brilliant or prolific lyricist.
Bon's notebooks disappeared from his apartment after he died.
The lyrics on the album Back In Black are full of cleverness and double entendre, something Bon always did in his lyrics.
Bon's family continues to get royalty checks for the album Back In Black.
These are not opinions, they are facts. Make of them what you will.

IMHO, Brian Johnson took idea’s and lines of what Bon had written down for that song and possibly others. When you look at lyrics from for those about to rock you see on full display Brian Johnson’s lyrical style. It was nothing like Bons! The contrast from back in black and for those about to rock is evident. BON had a big lyrical influence on back in black. You can hear it, feel it, taste it.

It's a fantastic rock song that's full of energy. Although that applies to so much of AC/DC's output. I didn't get into anything by AC/DC until the Stephen King movie, Maximum Overdrive. Movie wasn't much to talk about but the soundtrack was. So Brain Johnson had been lead singer for a while and it wasn't until I looked into their back catalogue that I heard of Bon Scott. Obviously I don't know who wrote it but for the ones saying it was Scott, it's all very circumstantial and from people with a positively biased POV. Who knows and to me it shouldn't really matter to any one outside of Scott and the band. Take the song for what it is and enjoy it.
