Colt Starting The First Ride

- Here I am putting the first ride on a 6yr quarter horse mare. Before this, I have put roughly 2 - 3 weeks of ground work on her. I normally put 3- 5 days on a horse and then ride, but when I started working with this mare, there was still snow on the ground. So the footing wasn't good enough for me to lope on her without a bunch of slipping and sliding.

You're a lucky man, having this mare... She's wonderfull...
Good horsemen and beautiful Quarter Horse👍🏻
You're a Hand kid! That couldn't have went any better. Good preparation to boot!
Thank you Sir!
excellent first ride! She's very soft, responsive, and trusting of you
You are the first guy I've seen besides myself and my dad that does it like that. Bouncing in the stirrups with the head bent, lots of bending the head from side to side especially the first time you sit in the saddle and doing circles. Not only does all of this give the horse a chance to get used to someone on their back, but it makes it pretty damn hard for them to buck or bolt. Good job
Thank you! You sound like you do it almost identical to me. Keep up the great work!!
Craig Cameron Ride Smart teaches just like this. Great job.
would love to see a video of your ground work .she was so soft before you even got on.
thanks for sharing
Your welcome! If you go to my channel home page, I have a video of some of the ground work I did with this mare.
This was a great video. Very helpful and love your kind horsemanship attitude!
Marcie McFarland Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Very nice job on her! The best video I’ve seen this is just the way I’d do it!
Great video, your a horseman, no nonsense straight to the point👍
She is standing fairly calmly. But I would give her clear releases of pressure as she successfully completes a given task.
Thanks for the tip. Since this video, I've changed things up just a bit.
I wish you lived close to me! I would totally trust you with my filly
The most important part of this, is not shown in the video: the 2,5 weeks of groundwork. Without that, she would be freaking out. Please show the groundwork as well. That’s where it all starts.
Yes sir! The groundwork does miracles for those green colts!
and aww beautiful filly
Drop the music so we can hear you better.
That was pretty classy kid...
Thanks man!
Hey great job man .any current projects ?
I love how you don't put a bit right away i was watching a video and they put a bit on the horse the first ride
finally someone waiting til theyre fully developed..
Good content, but drop the music so we can hear you
I have a question for you, watched a ton of your videos, but I am breaking my own colt and I have a few questions for you! I always like getting input from different trainers. Do you have a Facebook page or something or could I email you?
Hannah Walsh you can look me up on Facebook. Leif Harbidge
How come they never show how to put halter on for the first time all the do is show off
how old should be horse to start riding him?
Nemanja Ajkovic generally I like them to be 2 yrs old. But 3 or 4 yr is easier on their body.
Not trying to hate but why does the title say colt starting when your working with a filly?
Hawk Games colt starting is what we refer to at starting a horse under saddle! It doesn't matter if it is a filly or colt!
Yea i would have liked to see some ground work all that you did is done with ground work
What kind of bosal do you ride
This is a rope basal that I made up myself. But almost any kind of narrower basal works pretty good!
The filly I am working with isn't quite getting the forward que with clicking and leg pressure. any ideas?
Justin Reimer good question! What I would do is start using a spanker, or the end of your rein to encourage forward movement. You would do this by spanking from side to side behind your legs.
Ok I am hesitant to use more force, since it is the first colt I have started, isn't my horse, and I am getting paid for it too. I just am not sure if it is my fault or hers. I will try this for sure and try to make sure that she is understanding. She disengages her hind quarters and she will do circles with me but hesitantly and stopping lots.
Click and then kick and eventually he will pick up
You wont have to spank hard, light spank and increase the pressure. So the horse isnt spooked.
Or if you have a helper they can control the horse from the ground in the round pen while you are just a passenger.
@@country_footsteps I saw a video where someone on the ground moved them around with the flag if they balk. Desensize to flag before hand
what colour is your filly
Isabella Byrnes she is a red dun. In oder to be a true dun, they must have a line down their back. If you look when she goes by, you can see that.
talk to me on hangouts ok
Isabella Byrnes I don't have hangouts, but you can look me up on Facebook. Leif Harbidge
@@leifharb That is not a red dun. She is just dun, or bay dun. Red duns do not have black points.
lose the music! cant hear the trainer at all because of it
U r to big for that horse
I'm a grand total of 145 lbs and with a horse this big, she didn't have any issue.
TheAlpineCracker it still a lot of strain
TheAlpineCracker she is tiny
Nah man he aint too big
Considering he is TRAINING the horse. I'm sure she's just fine. That and just because she's "shorter" doesn't mean she can't handle his weight. Horses can carry 20% of their weight easily and even up to 25%. That mare probably weighs an easy 950-1000. Are you saying because he is too tall? My weight would be fine for that horse and I'm 150 standing at 5 7". Either way doesn't matter because he's training her.
