Colt Starting The First Ride

  • Here I am putting the first ride on a 6yr quarter horse mare. Before this, I have put roughly 2 - 3 weeks of ground work on her. I normally put 3- 5 days on a horse and then ride, but when I started working with this mare, there was still snow on the ground. So the footing wasn't good enough for me to lope on her without a bunch of slipping and sliding.

    You are the first guy I've seen besides myself and my dad that does it like that. Bouncing in the stirrups with the head bent, lots of bending the head from side to side especially the first time you sit in the saddle and doing circles. Not only does all of this give the horse a chance to get used to someone on their back, but it makes it pretty damn hard for them to buck or bolt. Good job

    The most important part of this, is not shown in the video: the 2,5 weeks of groundwork. Without that, she would be freaking out. Please show the groundwork as well. That’s where it all starts.

    Not trying to hate but why does the title say colt starting when your working with a filly?

    • @leifharb
      @leifharb  7 лет назад +11

      Hawk Games colt starting is what we refer to at starting a horse under saddle! It doesn't matter if it is a filly or colt!

    The filly I am working with isn't quite getting the forward que with clicking and leg pressure. any ideas?

    • @leifharb
      @leifharb  6 лет назад

      Justin Reimer good question! What I would do is start using a spanker, or the end of your rein to encourage forward movement. You would do this by spanking from side to side behind your legs.

    • @Justin_Reimer
      @Justin_Reimer 6 лет назад +1

      Ok I am hesitant to use more force, since it is the first colt I have started, isn't my horse, and I am getting paid for it too. I just am not sure if it is my fault or hers. I will try this for sure and try to make sure that she is understanding. She disengages her hind quarters and she will do circles with me but hesitantly and stopping lots.

      Click and then kick and eventually he will pick up

    • @country_footsteps
      @country_footsteps 5 лет назад +1

      You wont have to spank hard, light spank and increase the pressure. So the horse isnt spooked.
      Or if you have a helper they can control the horse from the ground in the round pen while you are just a passenger.

    what colour is your filly

    • @leifharb
      @leifharb  7 лет назад

      Isabella Byrnes she is a red dun. In oder to be a true dun, they must have a line down their back. If you look when she goes by, you can see that.

      Considering he is TRAINING the horse. I'm sure she's just fine. That and just because she's "shorter" doesn't mean she can't handle his weight. Horses can carry 20% of their weight easily and even up to 25%. That mare probably weighs an easy 950-1000. Are you saying because he is too tall? My weight would be fine for that horse and I'm 150 standing at 5 7". Either way doesn't matter because he's training her.
