In this unsponsored video I perform a head to head test of the latest Bavarian 300+ hp AWD hot hatches, the BMW M135i X-drive and the Audi S3 quattro. Will the verdict be a shock win for the BMW or typical predictable 'fanboy' outcome?

Perfect answer for anyone who says your videos are biased (I don't, I've always found your comments to be honest & balanced, even if I don't always agree with them) - if they were, the S3 would have won, I'm sure! Personally, I like the "old skool" buttons on the BMW (my sister in law has a 19 plate 2 series Msport coupe, so I've seen something like it & it beats a touch screen, IMHO). That grille, though....what WERE BMW thinking!
The Audi looks very similar to my Wife's new Edition 1 35 TFSi A3 (supposed to be a Sport, but she ended up with the Ed 1 due to a defect with the original car - long story!). Same 19" wheels, same interior & very similar seats (with quilted Alcantara centre panels, rather than leather, which I prefer, to be honest). It's s big step up from a Sport, but striking how similar it is to the S3 - almost identical (but with half the hp).
Think if I was buying either of these cars, I'd wait for the Mk8 Golf R 🤣.

Good comment. Personally I am reserving judgement on the G8R and have ordered a CR Yaris to run alongside my 7.5R, whilst I form a view on the mk8 as it rolls out.
Never thought I’d buy a Toyota, buy I just fancy some greasy road fun.

The interior in the latest one series is really good. I hate the exterior, but they’ve nailed it inside for me. It’s not flash, but it’s bloody well made unlike that nasty, chintzy interior that Mercedes out I the A Class. The fact that it retains buttons and the idrive wheel is a huge plus point in my opinion. I don’t like the relentless march of touchscreens high I don’t think are practical when driving. The only negative of the BMW interior is the digital dash....it’s horrible.
I’m not sold on the latest S3 at all (not that I was on previous versions either). What is it with Audi and their love of bloody chrome.

BMW are making some fantastic cars at the moment especially the new 3 series and I’m a VAG fan. I have a BMW M135i which I recently replaced my BMW 335XD with, it's as quick albeit not with the low down torque I had the 6-cylinder 335. Never driven a S3 but I'd agree with much of the review of the BMW, weak point for me is the gear box which feels slower than the ZF in the 3-series.
The car has a little torque steer from FWD bias and handling wise could take stiffer suspension set-up (I have the active). The sound is a little synthetic in elsewhere in the cabin and some of the plastics are a trade down from my 3-series (it's a 1-series after all). All in all though it's a great car to drive day to day for commute etc.

With all these huge grills, and ducts that they draw attention to by their surrounding materials, cars are starting to look like "ghetto blasters" from the 90's. Specifically the ones designed to appeal to 14 year olds. Lots of fake exhausts styled into the bodywork too. I hate it.

Was a VW man for years had had several Golf GTI's the quality and reliability dropped very badly and I moved to BMW in the mid 90's and with just one exception (which was a dealer issue - drove the car into a ramp) the cars have been very good, a 318, 318 touring, 323, 525 & my present 530i E60 which is a bit tired after 15 years but still going strong and frugal. The Audi is in a really nice colour, the battleship grey of the BMM is awful (to me). I can't stand all the excess chrome on the Audi and the grill is too big and unbalanced. The info display is too low in the Audi and below the driver view line which is not good. I profess I like the 1 series and my daughter has a 2018 118i Msport which is really nice car but the new one does move it on. The 135i has been given good review especially on poise but a lot of moaning about the loss of the B58 six cylinder engine.

I would pick the 135i m x drive or the 140i m. And the Audi s3 for my wife.
For me BMW is not only the type of car it’s a lifestyle. There really thinking about the company’s history. Stick to the brand values. Making only small changes on the cars. Off cours with the 135i not being rear wheel drive but front is a shame they could give it the option from the BMWs m5 that there is a button to change to only rear wheels drive/x drive to only rear wheel drive But still is it the quality of BMW what make the brand so good and nice experience. Audi is very modern and new but the quality of Audi is less plus it falling basically under VW where Iam not that fan of. Stille after Porsche, than BMW I would pick a Audi. From Mercedes I also like the small A35 and 45 amg. Just so modern a new interior but than again it had parts what not that strong build or felt cheap with cheap plastic. Just a shame for a expensive car and still the nummer 1 celling German car company.
I definitely thing with all of those cars you can’t go wrong and there al good. Just look what really fit you and which you feels the most connected to.
Again for me is BMW is a life style. It has also motorcycles that are also really good so definitely a plus. Another thing are the experience of you get a new BMW or just when you walk in a BMW dealer with the fashion, the sit corners with the big screens etc. Just hole the experience is so great.
And yes the car drives also good, it’s a company, don’t forget with one of the most race experience and like Porsche every time where they put them self into they win with the brandname.
Yes Iam BMW lover but not a hater! I love cars and I really thing Audi is super modern and the Quattro is another level. And Mercedes crazy a cool the layers interior looks.
    Be safe everybody!

While BMW need to the advert this version, Audi don't even bother to do so. That roundabout was a joke by the way, the car it's much more balanced and interactive than the older versions that's what really makes the difference not a dummy proof hot hatch. The Audi it's always quicker not just on b road, the gearbox it's miles away from the BMW, in resume it's much more mature car which the decade's of development prove, once the BMW it's the first front wheel drive platform. I loved my RS3 saloon, I didn't care about understeer and you could actually make it power oversteer so it had some 'adjustability' to it but I loved the interior especially with the RS interior styling pack which put alcantara on the centre console. New RS3 might have this too BUT it's a bit pointless when the carpets and a lot of the plastics now look like an A1 or Polo, it's like getting your clothes from Matalan but wearing a Hugo Boss hat. It's annoying on the £38k S3, I think I might get plain angry with the £50k RS3!

My issue with the new S3 headlights is not the size but the shape that is less aggressive than the 8V FL.
Not keen on the new bumper either, remind me of some of the Hyundai model (side vents) or the fake vents at the back.
The torque limit also make me wonder if it has the same upgrade capability of the 8V. Mine running 530Nm torque.
Then dropped in interior quality. Loved the S3 for years but here feeling like Audi dropped the ball a bit, first S3 I wouldn't have.

I had to turn it off 15 mins in as the comparisons where all in favour of the BMW which I have no problem with. It was a while ago now but the main fact is that the BMW has a high quality interior befitting of a prestige brand, the Audi’s is a massive step down over the old model and is pretty nasty if you look at the quality of materials and past the styling. From a brand famous for their interiors it’s a deal breaker for me but for those who prioritise style over substance, it won’t be

As a long term Audi/VW customer who recently jumped ship to the new M135i (one year old press car with all the toys!) it was great to see your excellent review Andrew. After test driving the new A3 and Series 1, it was the quality of the interior that clinched it for me. I have the alcantara seats which personally I prefer to the leather, as well as the heated steering wheel and head up display which aren't even options on the S3. My only disappointment was the lack of configurability of the virtual display which is better on the Audi, although the iDrive infortainment is great.

There needs to be a bigger conversation about VAG cost cutting. I've had some terrible experiences reliability wise and repair cost wise with my Scirocco and more recently the A5. I'd also argue driver engagement wise, they've all gone backwards since the mk5 Golf. The mqb platform has cut costs and taken something away from the hatchbacks. The cars look great, they have the premium badge, but I don't feel they have the premium build and driver experience anymore. Dieselgate has killed them. It's even seeped through to the dealership experience. I've had rubbish experiences with Essex Audi and Inchcape VW. My sister bought a John Cooper Works from Fairfield Mini a few years, absolutely fantastic customer service since, night and day difference. Glad Andrew has been honest in this review.

Only seeing this now in fact. Good video. Only not agreeing with the final verdict. But, it is simply because the arguments you use to pick the BMW above the Audi, are one of personal taste, people agree or disagree, but in the end it is personal.
Driving-wise they are quite close. And to me, having driven both, and besides that a few other cars as well, the BMW always feels like they are stuck in time, while Audi and some others are moving forward with their design. Some in a good way, others not so much. For example, I don't like the complete button digitalisation of the G8R. On the other hand, it gives a clean finish inside the car.
