Great video, I remember doing a day trip to leeds, mainly looking at the old pubs, I did find whitelocks, and went in it, I don't remember the gate at that time, probably about 10 years ago, it was certainly very interesting inside
I think where your grandmother saw the jazz singer was there or thereabouts the starlight club(?lounge) a locally famous dance place ..my mother saw the other Jolson film, the singing fool there
The entrance to the "verts" was crowned by an illuminated sign ..a right turn from the passageway and downstairs led to the Piccadilly bar,a circular one ,now become the swan cafe bar
I wasn't sure if it was the one I filmed or the building where superdrug is just a little further down. He always told me she'd gone to see the first talking picture. I don't remember the starlight club, thanks I'll look it up. 👍
I've found a photo of the cinema on the Leodis database, I was in the right place. The building is almost unchanged apart from the shop front. It was the Theatre de Luxe, 16-17, Kirkgate. Opened 1910, closed 1934.
I had forgotten that but again I looked it up on Leodis, I remember now a pub called the Precinct (there's a photo of it) that was where the Superdrug is on the video. Wondering if this was the Golden Cock. 👍

Thanks 👍 it's a great pub, I've had some fab nights in there. The gate is a modern thing. You did used to be able to walk right through.
