Crash Bandicoot Warped Prototype: Startup & Toad Village

The greatest christmas present this year was this prototype version of Crash Bandicoot 3 that was made available only a few hours ago. It was released thanks to a fundraiser that I contributed to and it finally reached its goal on Christmas Eve. This had to be done because the disc was highly expensive for the person who obtained it and it's only fair he gets compensated.
This version dates back to July 17th 1998, roughly three and a half months before the game was released. There are massive differences from the completed version, and you can already see one of the biggest ones in this video - the unfinished time trial mode with a special time box and no time boxes whatsoever. Apparently, all levels have the same time requirements - 2:00:00 for Silver, 1:40:00 for Gold, and 1:15:00 for Platinum.
As for this level itself, there aren't any big differences, but it does contain the blue gem, which you cannot obtain by any normal means. However, you can unlock all the colored gems with a code. You can also unlock all the power ups, which I did to be able to do the time trial, but I didn't really need it here, since I beat the platinum time by 22 seconds.

It's interesting hearing ALMOST complete versions of the final game's songs, e.g the medieval theme here is missing some backing and percussion. And the time trial mechanic is mostly functional, including the name entry, but lacks polish. Also no new checkpoint and item sounds. The prototype main theme is still jarring given how iconic Warped's theme is, though.
I wonder how many of the unique death animations are in this version. I'd assume the generic angel is more common here.

I noticed that the stack of three crates between the frog and swordsman were moved to the side a bit, and the top crate was originally an Aku Aku crate that was later moved to just before the Bonus Round.
I find the lack of time crates in time trial interesting, but not in a bad way. It was originally a straight rush to end, which while less intricate is a lot more faithful to the idea of a time trial.

It looks like they haven’t been implemented yet. There’s not even gold or platinum relics, just a basic silver one for completing a time trial.
