I almost cried when the part of Frieren realizing that Voll losing his memories... It was really sad. Then there's the part of Voll dreaming about his wife... In my place, it is said that people near the end of their life, when they dreamt of their deceased loved one, it's their end of the line. When I first read about Voll saying he had dreamt about his wife, I thought Voll is about to die. Hearing that line again in this episode made me think that maybe it's not about Voll dying. He regained the memory of her when he talked about her with Frieren 😢 Btw, when Magic Exams arc starts, it will set a much different tone on the series for sure. More conflicts, more threats and more world building will arise.

It never pulls a single emotional punch, never shies away from driving straight at the emotional core of every story, and yet it never feels like it's going out of its way to do so or playing things up for cheap emotional impact. Every last hit feels totally earned.

The fact that we got Frieren, Apothecary Diaries and Oshi no Ko in the same year is mind blowing to me. We finally getting high production in other anime that are not just battle shonen and have genuinely interesting concepts. What a great year.
I agree. Frieren just keeps building and building. Other anime have their moments (the smithing scene in Shangri-La Frontier episode 11 is a top 5 moment of the year for me) but as far as total, overall quality in all aspects (gods, the score) Frieren is tops.
You nailed it at the start, ive read this scene in the manga and it disnt quite hit as hard. Being in a family that has a history of alzheimers that scene hit in the anime much harder. The animation in this ahow is unbelievably good.
The saddest part of the episode for me was when Frieren had a bittersweet smile thinking about how Himmel said he would make these "ikemen" poses, saying it is wasted memories, and it does feel like she is nostalgic of this time.

While Vinland Saga S2 still gets my vote for anime of the year credit where credit is due Frieren is a strong contender I was not expecting to love this show as much as I do. Definitely checking out the manga after this.
I don't think it was because the old man was crazy or had dementia.. I think it was her withholding the information about the demon king being slain so that he still has a reason to live, to protect the village, so he won't feel like he's been doing it all for nothing all this time. Specifically because they were talking one scene earlier about their "Reason" and motivation to keep on going.
I honestly wouldn't mind for this anime to be "Anime of the Year" This series got a lot of emotional status, Especially watching this for the first time get me liking it, I think the characters and just the emotional vibe is what makes this series much more interesting, Frieren is funny at times and I love her relationships with Himmel, Eisen, and Heiter, yet now it's Stark and Fern, and what it means to be a powerful mage who's been around for centuries.
We know well enough to prepare ourselves for the feels when we watch a new episode of Frieren.... but it always gets to us, like a punch to the gut. :,D

Frieren hits on musical scores, dialogue, story, animating minuscule things to bring out more emotion. That eye animation you see on Frieren this episode you see on Graf when Lugner lies about keeping his fathers room clean like Graf does for his dead son. They keep doing that, making the effort to animate tiny things they don't have to, but because they do it brings out so much more emotion to the scene. the explanation of different magics and what they can and cannot do, why something is a curse, etc is also fascinating. The ballroom dance scene, Stark putting on his jacket, subtle eye movements, taking off and tossing a robe, HAIR HAVING FUCKING PHYSICS, good god the fact Aura's hair falls over her arm when the blade starts cutting is brutal. Combat in the show is impactful and flashy, Linie tossing the spear, landing, changing it to a dagger, and tossing it while shifting about with her momentum was insanity. Fern walking down Lugner while effortlessly blasting his blood magic, the scene where she is on the tower, fires off multiple blasts and is engulfed in the flames and loses sight of Lugner then animating her subtle head and eye movements as she locks back onto him. None of this needed to be animated to the detail it was, but the fact that it was adds leagues of depth to this anime that no others match. I am sorry, but nothing is competing with Frieren right now, you can have favorites, but the ratings don't lie, Frieren is outperforming every expectation.
Every now and then an anime comes along that really shows you that you’re watching a work of art. It’s pure artistic expression and everyone that is involved with the project , from the mangaka to the show runners are completely in sync. It’s fucking insane how good this show is. Mark these words, if they continue with this level of care this show is going to go down in history. We are watching something very special right now.
The moments where Frieren encounters the losses and changes bring to all mortals is the core to it the story strength. The discovery and re-discovery (her companions evolving love) of life’s journeys is another strength to the anime. These emotional depths make it extra-ordinary. However, the characters are not as deep and complex as in Apothecary Diaries. There are not as much philosophic questions of existence, but a more engagement in the complexities of living in this status obsessed and woman powerlessness civilization. In addition there are these nested story arc and threads that emerge as backstories are revealed and how strangely events and characters are connected. So my anime of the year is probably Apothecary Diaries albeit Frieren is a very close second. There is a novelty in Diaries of characters especially strong (good or “bad’) woman asserting their existence while Frieren has the odyssey like arc that explores meaning to life. Regarding humor I laugh and cry a bit more in Diaries than Frieren but both touch my heart and silly bone.
Personally, it's been Frieren vs Vinland for this "year", but Frieren still has a good amount eps to go with its 28 ep season, so if it stays as consistent while hitting its high points just as well as it has been doing with the 16 eps we got for this year then its anime of 2023.
@@Centillionial no I mean objective lol. The only story that can compete with vinland in terms of storytelling is vagabond, beserk, one piece, hxh, and aot. The story that farmland saga tells is one of the most well executed story arcs I've ever witnessed. If you compare the two series, vinland just is better in every category:themes, characters, worldbuilding, etc. I still like frieren tho
@@re_striker3431 I absolutely adored Vinland Saga Season 2 but I think people put it too high on a pedestal, because ultimately Thorfinn learning his ways into becoming a true warrior is very much carried by a significant portion of season 1 with Askelaad being an amazing character. One major gripe of mine of season 2 is that I honestly did not like how they used Arnheid's character to generate emotion with backstories that had zero significance to the plot just for her to die in the end to bring out emotion, even with her husband too. All this just to simply bring out one main idea that peace could be achieved if they found a place such as Vinland. Though you could probably argue the same thing with backstories found in Frieren, but at least they act as more of a reminiscence to further progress a plot such as solving the main problem at hand. Many anime that people enjoy like JJK or Vinland Saga still use regular cliche backstories such as whenever a character is about to die, they show this big backstory of theirs just to make it seem more important that they've died. This was the case for so many characters, like Arnheid, Nanami, Nobara, etc. Other than that, Vinland Saga was an absolutely astounding adaptation by MAPPA in my opinion, but I honestly preferably enjoy the animation and the rough looks found by MADHOUSE a lot more. You rarely find anime series these days that extend past 24 episodes in a single season and its because of studios like MADHOUSE that don't relax on other anime they've done like HxH, OPM, Death Note and Monster. I would agree with you that much of the world building in Vinland Saga is somewhat better than Frieren because at least new unique places are discovered unlike Frieren where they just go from an unimportant village with little significance to the next. However, you can't compare the characters between them because no emotion is needed or exaggerated from characters in Frieren because all they do is travel from place to place, more or less just a simple adventure. This is an opinion of mine and isn't "objective".
@@re_striker3431 Also, the music and animation in Frieren is obviously better than Vinland Saga, but that's because more opportunities are given in Frieren to do that. Between JJK and Frieren animation is purely subjective so it depends on your tastes.
frieren was the anime of the year since episode 9 the mal scores dont lie it has dethroned fmab for a whole month when oshi no ko finished i was confident that oshi no ko would be anime of the year, with the frieren being the only anime that could possibly top it. and that was exactly what happened i love oshi no ko to death, but not giving frieren anime of the year is a disservice to me as an anime fan

I remember back when the first 4 episodes came out and Frieren quickly took the top spot of MAL, a lot of people were saying “slow down it just started no way they are going to keep up the quality” and jokes on them because Frieren has been hitting episode after episode. It will probably get kicked out of the top spot in MAL but it is still anime of the year by a mile.
My best friends, mom I basically called them a second family has dementia and I recently got to see her and she forgot my face and her own son for a few mins…it’s rough I’ve known these guys for like 20 years too
Frieren definitely is one of the best shows this year. I'm not sure where it ranks for me, but every episode gets me emotional. That Voll scene about dementia and what it might mean for Frieren in the future is so sad. One day she will forget Himmel, Heiter, Eisen, Stark, Fern, and Sein. It will hurt her even more, considering Stark and Fern are like her children.
The music is so emotional, cuz Evan Call, who made Violet Evergarden's music so emotional, is doing the OST. And the man has NOT disappointed. There's scenes where the MUSIC hits you in the feels.
I cant wait if there will be a spin off about the adventures of Kraft with his buddies and how they saved the world. and how time makes kraft realizes how time is affecting him and decided to praise their memory with him
Great stories show us truth about our own life. Good fantasy stories let us dream, learn and if they are really good... grow. Gorilla Warrior wants to become King Kong ^^ (fore-ever archetype)

The manga definitely holds its own versus the anime, after like 10 episodes I decided to read the manga and could not stop until I caught up within a couple of days, it's that good
Frieren is certainly in the top choices for anime of the year. The plot is amazing, the characters are fun to watch, and just the journey of the show itself. Pun intended.
Mushoku Tensei Season 2 and Frieren are going to compete head to head over best fantasy award category.(Unless Crunchyroll fuck up again this year and give it to Demon Slayer Season 3 or JujutsuKaisen Season 2).

@@Archaoen0 jujutsu has 5 fights better than all of bleach’s fights. Shibuya arc is just one of the best arcs in fiction. Complete and utter chaos. Voice acting is done better and plot points hit harder because we don’t know who’s gonna make it out alive. We already know all of Ichigo’s group is gonna make it out alive and then you compare it to nobora who died, megumi who was on the brink of death, and Yuji who saw all those close to him perish before him. Plot just hits too many emotional notes. The standout moment from bleach that I do have to give credit to is the senjumaru bankai which was incredible. Jujutsu just had too many highs, almost eleven episodes of straight fighting without reprieve and completely fast paced. And don’t even get me started on the character development
@@angelowardez6010 well, you have to remember it's essentially 2 arcs vs 1/4 of an arc and even tho the fights and animation goes to JJK, the moments, Voice Acting, Music, Story, Art, Villains and Presentation all go to Bleach, but i think I'll give Mahito's VA for probably the best performance of the year.
I would like to point out something that, admittedly is purely my own opinion. While I can't be 100% confident in this, it should be said that we are talking about someone who was approaching 400 years old. This is important because it is stated early on that the average lifespan of his people is only 300, he is almost 100 years older than most dwarves will ever be. In other words, his memory loss among other things is a result of him approaching the end of his life. Frieren is probably just around 1100... Which if I recall correctly, Kraft himself admits that Frieren is still a child at that age. Given how little we know of the elves in Frieren, it's possible that she may never experience the deterioration that comes with reaching the end of your life. For all we know elves in this world are immune to age-related death, which would also have been a reason the Demon King had pushed for their extinction... Regardless of my above opinion, I absolutely love this story and as it stands, it has already taken my #2 spot for best anime/manga of all time... Given that we still have 12 more episodes for this season and its manga still ongoing, it may well tale that #1 spot soon enough....
Just watched the episode and do feel that the moment Frieren didn't correct his old friend is also because he has been guarding the place in memories of his wife, defeat of the demon king could mean the end of his promise to his wife as well, thats why she didn't correct him
I mean I like frieren as well but there were plenty of other anime’s that were just as good if not better. Frieren is an acquired taste imo. I know I know, being on the hate lol…

Nah vinland storytelling is objectively better than frieren. Vinland has to be the anime of 2023 because of the beautiful themes
@@re_striker3431 "Objective" you mean it's just an opinion?
Between JJK and Frieren animation is purely subjective so it depends on your tastes.
frieren was the anime of the year since episode 9
the mal scores dont lie it has dethroned fmab for a whole month
when oshi no ko finished i was confident that oshi no ko would be anime of the year, with the frieren being the only anime that could possibly top it. and that was exactly what happened
i love oshi no ko to death, but not giving frieren anime of the year is a disservice to me as an anime fan
Jjk is anime of the year for me but I respect your opinion. Frieren was in my top 3 and Oshi no ko outside it barely.
@@angelowardez6010 we are really spoilt for choice this year. We have bangers after bangers every season in the anime landscape whilst Hollywood quality keeps declining significantly. Frieren is my anime of the year, but Vinland S2 and JJK S2 is very close to being my favourite. So many memorable and unique anime in 2023. We are really blessed.
@@angelowardez6010 i really dont like giving continuing shows anime of the year because i think its unfair
But even then i do think it is one of the best this year
I remember back when the first 4 episodes came out and Frieren quickly took the top spot of MAL, a lot of people were saying “slow down it just started no way they are going to keep up the quality” and jokes on them because Frieren has been hitting episode after episode. It will probably get kicked out of the top spot in MAL but it is still anime of the year by a mile.
Hmm Vinland saga still has a place in my heart. So Frieren comes second. The ancient Magus bride new season was also very good
My best friends, mom I basically called them a second family has dementia and I recently got to see her and she forgot my face and her own son for a few mins…it’s rough I’ve known these guys for like 20 years too
Frieren is my anime of the year.
Its okay, I have no enemies
NGL this year has been pretty stacked. Hard to decide the AOTY with all these good shows popping up.
I cant wait if there will be a spin off about the adventures of Kraft with his buddies and how they saved the world. and how time makes kraft realizes how time is affecting him and decided to praise their memory with him
I need A Freiren Jackopose statue 💯 I love suprise shows I swear I catch the feels every episode
It's sad Voll. was on his own losing his memories. If you see real people with dementia then you know how real this episode is.
Great stories show us truth about our own life. Good fantasy stories let us dream, learn and if they are really good... grow.
Gorilla Warrior wants to become King Kong ^^ (fore-ever archetype)
100%, im in love of this anime, the music and animation is perfecto in My opinion, and the plot is very unique. 🇦🇷
Love this series, glad its gotten so popular
If we don’t count 2nd seasons frieren should be the best one
But in general the best anime of the year should be Vinland Saga season 2 by far
Maomao and The apothecary diaries has my vote for anime of the year
time catches up to all of us no matter how stubborn you are no one is prepared for it because it may change your physical being of who you once was and the more stubborn you are the more harder it is to realize before it's too late.
Frieren 🤩
December 23, 2023
I'll give it a 9.9/10 because I have to wait a week for another episode every time 😅
Now 2 weeks
I wouls suggest for you sir chibi a korean manga, the nebula civilization, pretty good one😊
Something about this show feels very 90s Disney. I'd bet Disney wishes it had the magic of this show.
Ok I have not seen it but man you gotta give action animes credit to like jjk ep 15-23 the last 8 episodes has been banger after banger. mappa animators no matter what are they going through are delivering and we as fans should deliver as well. That is pizzas
I like both this and apothecary diaries. .
Its sad seeing the dwarf losing his memories slowly as he ages.
I honestly think this is the best Anime of all time, not just the year, for me.
When it eventually ends, I bet it will be, for many other people as well.
For me it’s between jjk and Vinland
The manga definitely holds its own versus the anime, after like 10 episodes I decided to read the manga and could not stop until I caught up within a couple of days, it's that good
WHAT A 2 WEEK BREAK?! Alr that's not even bad when some anime go on like a half year break to air the rest of their season
Hey chibi will you be continuing the reviews on eminence in shadow s2😊
Yes I will
I no longer believe him. What’s the point now that the season is over. Can only hope Winter season has more enjoyable videos
Frieren is certainly in the top choices for anime of the year. The plot is amazing, the characters are fun to watch, and just the journey of the show itself. Pun intended.
NO WAY ITS THE ANIME OF THE YEAR IF MUSHOKU TENSEI IS ON THE LIST.
Mushoku Tensei Season 2 and Frieren are going to compete head to head over best fantasy award category.(Unless Crunchyroll fuck up again this year and give it to Demon Slayer Season 3 or JujutsuKaisen Season 2).
*Cough* Vinland Saga Season 2, Trigun Stampede, Undead Unluck. *cough*
The manga is amazing one of the best I’ve ever read
Frieren and Vinland saga are my top this year both number one
Frieren and Vinland Saga Is the top anime this year but frieren has the best adaptation this year and Vinland saga has best story imo both of them deserve the anime of the year!
Frieren are going to action phase in cour 2 im excited for mage exam arc 🔥🔥🔥
Ay man, that vinland adaptation was flawless as well. People forget how beautiful that show looked.
@@re_striker3431Yes. Especially that episode with Gardar conclusion scene. It was a few pages in the manga, but the anime made it into an entire episode. One of the most profound epsiode of anime, and up there with "I have no enemies" episode.
we need a movie on their journey defeating the demon king
This anime so beautiful 😢
Madhouse has been on a mission…
Oshi no Ko clears this year imo
I love Wow's soundtrack but it was a bit too loud and distracting in the background while u were talking xD
I had to hold back the tears when Voll said he couldn't remember his wife and Frieren realised what was happening ... truly 10/10 series
Newest thing hype.
Its good just not as good as some others like vinland saga s2
Good times with the priest
If Vinland Saga S2 doesnt exist yes.....but it is the Best New Anime of 2023, No Doubt.
from what I've heard Frieren is pretty much panel for panel straight copy from the manga no cuts slight tweaks but holy crap is it good.
I'd still say Vinland Saga and Pluto top it. But Frieren is indeed top tier
apothecary diaries comes close to it, but i supposed you made that title to bait me into commenting, congrats!
i would agree if vinland didnt come out
Yup
I'm actually going to cry if Gorilla Warrior died before meeting back with Sein.
Peakland saga sweeps it for me
Imma have to dissagree with that, Bleach is my Anime of the year and nothing comes close.
100% agree!
Jujutsu Kaisen and nothing comes close
@@angelowardez6010 it's great, but still not enough
I love Frieren, but personally I would say AOTY is Vinland Saga, 2 is AOT and Frieren is 3
Just watched the episode and do feel that the moment Frieren didn't correct his old friend is also because he has been guarding the place in memories of his wife, defeat of the demon king could mean the end of his promise to his wife as well, thats why she didn't correct him
Times a bitch and then you die and then you'll be forgotten..................
Hello there! :D
Can you do a top 10 of the year?
I mean I like frieren as well but there were plenty of other anime’s that were just as good if not better. Frieren is an acquired taste imo. I know I know, being on the hate lol…
Calling it Anime of the year is overating it, but is definely a masterpice.
If you can consider it a masterpiece the someone else could say it's anime of the year.i don't think it's really overating it. But this year has been pretty great with anime so a bunch can take tht title it's just a matter of preference
Me: Uh no. Joshi Luck’s and Imaizumin Chi’s OVAs outperformed any other anime this year
Chibi: hmmm. You have a point. My videos corroborate this.
