before i watch some thoughts - the BR genre came and blew up at the best possible time, the lockdown period. amazing time for BRs, playing w friends, the competition and all
Getting a "where we droppin boys" in the group chat in 2020 was such a vibe, can't believe that was only 4 years ago. Feels like an old nostalgic memory. Whatever comes next, it's got quite the void to fill.
I'm on the wrong side of 50 and I still dive into Fortnite now and again, it started off as a game with my nephews but now I play the solo "No Build" mode mainly, it's the style I like....I'm crap at building to be honest. I also power up APEX, not as much as I used to but it still gets a play through a few times a month, bizarrely I still get notifications from H1Z1 which I haven't played in probably 4 years and even more strange I still get updates for Cuisine Royale which I played about 10x on the PS4 5 or 6 years ago. :-D But my still to go to BR game is PUBG, it might be empty half the time but It's still the best imo.
It makes me sad that nobody mentions Player Unknown’s Battle Royale, which was a popular Mod in Arma 2 and 3.. that he did before moving onto working on H1Z1. And PUBG. Dude was responsible for and very involved with 4 of the first big pushes in battle royale. It’s also important to note that Fortnite was initially a coop story style mode where you fought zombie monsters with friends. And after the success of PUBG they completely changed directions and made the BR mode and everyone forgot Fortnite was initially something else entirely. But still… player unknown and his mods in Arma deserve so much credit. My biggest issue with modern BR is they are moving further and further away from what makes a BR. Initially it was more hunger game style… where you’re this lone person, scared, facing a bunch of other people. It wasn’t about killing but about surviving as long as you could. Like you’d do if you were in that position in the first place. Now it’s got all sorts of powers and crazy weapons and abilities. So much about movement and being fast. Rather than how it was originally about being quiet sneaky and tactical. Now it seems like the gameplay that used to be associated with BR, have transitioned into the extraction shooter genre. Like Tarkov. Hunt. Delta force. These slow paced. Methodical. Tactical styles of gameplay are what BR was initially. And it’s so hard to find that experience today. Which is sad. PUBG is the purest BR we still have. And it’s sad to see games moving further and further from it. Warzone 1 was closer to that. When it was great. But they keep moving further and further from it. I honestly think if they made a Warzone mode with no loadouts. No illstreaks or power ups of any kinds. Just weapons and attachments, where everything was based on ground loot. It would be a huge hit and give people the vibes they want. It’s just sad to see the way so many games have taken the BR mode and made it into an arena shooter on a larger map. And true BR’s are all but extinct now. It’s a sad day for player unknown and BR lovers.
Super well put together script and video. Keep up the awesome work. Little channels can still grow in 2024. If I can critique anything strictly as a viewer, it would be a slightly smaller camera, maybe. I haven't made anything myself, so I could be dead wrong, but just a thought from seeing others' content. Cheers, though, and keep making content.
br made a lot of people realize they suck at gaming. that's why all the premade fps games starting popping up, to give bad players a chance to group up and take out better solo players. fps gaming is for betas these days. There are only a few games left where a solo can make a difference with his skill left.
Very well put together video. I wanted to know though, in your opinion, what do you think will be the genre that replaces BR for the foreseeable future?
Thank you! And to be honest with youz I don't really know. The BR with def be here to stay. I imagine many companies with experiment with the extraction shooter template over the next couple years, but I don't see that having the same audience impact...
I look forward to your future videos! Just a small tip, maybe add some background/transition music or some more sound effects. For whatever reason, your video feels very isolated and lonely without more going on besides your speaking hard to put into words.
I see a whole lot of gamers complain about "oh another BR" or "BR is dead/so sick of BR." But BR is such a good genre because it makes people actually use team work and play strategically and tactically. BRs have morphed into more of big open TDMS with respawns. We need a NEW BR that is grounded, slow, big maps, tactical. A rebirth of a Pubg style BR before it got all corny with k pop skins

Nothing quite like the launch of those first few battle royales when no one knew how to play and we all sucked

Gotta say, I'm impressed how nearly every sentence has it's own background. Killer editing/green screen usage.

We miss the golden age of BR's :'( Hope to see you cover more topics!
no one should have to ask what happened to battle royals.. nor the games industry.. its one simple word "Greed"
Ain't that the truth :(
