    For those new to RM:
RM is a South Korean rapper born 1994 (30 years old) and he's currently doing his mandatory military service and will be back in June 2025.
RM started his military service in December 2023 so everything that has come out after Dec 2023 he recorded before he enlisted and just released after.
RM's latest album, released in May 2024, a few months after he left, is called *'Right Place, Wrong Person'.*
If you wanna check out more from RM he released MV's to the songs 'Nuts', 'Domodachi' (feat. Little Simz), 'Groin', 'Lost', 'Credit roll' and 'Come back to me' off his latest album.
The whole album is great and worth a listen. Moses Sumney is also a feature on one track.
The album was recognized as one of the best albums of the first half of the year 2024 by Rolling Stone, Billboard, The Associated Press, and NME.
Billboard wrote _"RM simply refuses to acknowledge the existence of any such boundaries over these 34 minutes, with 11 songs that careen from hip-hop to jazz to punk to R&B to Fela Kuti-styled Afrobeats - while all still sounding like a coherent and natural artistic extension of one man's creative vision"._
He also has two previous mixtapes *'RM'* released 2015 and *'Mono'* released in 2018 and another solo album called *'Indigo'* released in 2022 where he had features like Anderson Paak and Erykah Badu.
He's also recorded with Warren G, Wale, Juice WRLD, Tablo of Epik High, Tiger JK, Megan Thee Stallion and Fall Out Boy, just to name a few.
RM is a great songwriter so remember to *turn on the CC for English subtitles* when you check out his other work because he often switches between English and Korean.
His name is Kim Namjoon also often called Joon.
He went by the stage name Rap Monster before but now just RM.
He started out as an underground rapper when he was 13, was signed to Big Hit in 2010 and is the leader of the 7 member group BTS since their debut in 2013.
He is BTS main songwriter* and writes for other artists too and has credits as songwriter on over 200 tracks.
RM has an IQ of 148, is really into art and poetry and reads a lot which shows in his lyricism and overall work.
*All BTS member are involved in writing and producing their music and all 7 (3 rappers & 4 vocalists) have released their own solo projects as singles, mixtapes and albums. Their names are Jin, SUGA/Agust D, j-hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook.
BTS will be back working as a group in 2025 when all members have been discharged from the military. As of yet only Jin have finished his service and j-hope will be discharged next month, October 17th 2024, the other 5 enlisted later and will be discharged in June 2025.
    BTS fanbase is called ARMY.

RM is fluent in Japanese and English in addition to his native Korean. Check out his latest album right place wrong person. The three rappers in BTS are some of the best in the world. RM started in underground rap and so did Suga. BTS started as a hip hop group that the company then decided a few years into training to turn into an idol kpop group. It really shook RM and Suga, since they had never planned on having to learn to dance. But they realized in the end their music could reach a larger audience as an idol group and stuck with it. (Idol training can take years before debut). The music they started with for the first few albums is definitely more hip hop than later albums and their sound has evolved, but don't be deceived by their hits. They never lost their hip hop roots and you cannot pigeon hole them into one genre. Each of the rappers have released three albums, and RM has done 4. They are definitely rap albums. Each of the vocalists, except Jin, have released solo albums as well and Jin, the only one out of the military so far, is expected to release an album later this year. Definitely dig into their solo work and a bit deeper into BTS, they have songs just from the rap line only like Ugh, outro tear (live performance at wembley is not to be missed), Ddang, cyphers 1-4, cypher medley live in seoul, and amazing vocal line only songs like house of cards, the untold truth, zero o'clock, and dimple.

He has two mixtapes (RM and Mono) with complete opposite vibes, and teo albums (Indigo and RPWP), different from the mixtapes and different from each other. I love every single song from his discography! (I'm 67 yo, ok?)

Megan thanked BTS for being able to do on stage at her first ever Stadium Concert.

They are not allowed to work on music during military service but they worked hard before enlisting to record solo albums and singles to release during enlistment, no one in kpop did that before them (at least I didn’t heard) also they enlisted almost at the same time to return as a group as soon as possible , even though they have different ages and deadlines for enlisting
They are great artists and human beings, please react to bts black swan mv , it will definitely make you want to check more of them 🥰 or from their solos if you like rap daechwita mv by August d (bts rapper) if you like pop standing next to you by jungkook (youngest bts member)

They are not legally allowed to work while doing their military service but as they decided to go almost all together and they wanted a break and do whatever they felt like so some rested longer other continued to work in fact they all did their solo work. They did loads of things and could be released by their company while they are serving but they can't promote or create anything new. No one's done that before and they got accused of working illegally until it was pointed out that they prepared everything before enlisting and the military confirmed that as they are not promoting and not 'working' outside of the military they are not breaking military laws. They are pioneers no other group withing the Kpop Industry has prepare work to be released while they are serving in the military before.

    There is no "Underground KPop."
Here is a cliff notes lesson on S Korean music and where BTS fits into that landscape.
I expect that what heard was Underground Korean Rap. Rap thrives in S Korea, as a former colonized country which only recently got democracy (1987) and is still struggling to cast off the vestiges of their authoritarian past. Koreans generally like raw and real music that speaks truth to power.
Korea has many genres of music, like anywhere, including Trot, Ballads, Indie Folk, Rap, Jazz, RnB, Rock, etc. These types of music are generally more popular with the S Korean public than KPop.
KPop however, is not a genre of music. It doesn't mean Korean Pop. In fact, they don't even call it KPop in S Korea, that's a foreign popularized term. They call it Idol Music. It is an industry which represents (as Suga put it) "Integrated Content." Meaning it's groups and soloists who integrate fashion, music, dancing, music videos, and variety show appearances as well as the ubiquitous Idol music contest shows that air every day of the week where groups and soloists win titles through streams and voting, and the big music elimination shows (similar to things like American Idol or the Got Talent franchise in the West) where groups are sometimes built. Idol groups have a culture specific to that industry and many of them have a lot in common, in terms of style as well as sound, though there are a number of different soundscape subtypes under that umbrella.
BTS doesn't really falls under the category of KPop anymore, if they ever really did. Though they did come out of that world originally, they have never been a good fit for it, having many things that made them stand apart like their ethos, artistry, uniqueness, mission, messaging, musical style and other things. A big difference was their lack of the Idol "mystique." Instead of flashy fashion Gods/Goddesses from big labels who cultivated an air of mystery and untouchable perfection, from the beginning BTS were broke nobodies from a nothing label who vlogged and streamed because they could not really afford to advertise and were shunned by the interview and variety shows. They threw their whole hearts and lives in front of the cameras and into their music, including their fears, perceived flaws, mistakes, everything. We've seen them sobbing, raw, angry, sad, happy, celebrating, exhausted, depressed, asleep, drunk, you name it. They also wrote and produced their own music from the beginning and became known for their deep lyricism and the personal stories in their music, which is almost unheard of in KPop. They are not performers or entertainers, as many KPop Idols are, but real artists. There are other real artists in the ranks of KPop, but they are the exception, not the rule, mostly due to how companies handle the talent, what they look for in trainees, how they restrict their growth, the control they have over their music, etc. I find that most KPop has fairly vacuous lyrics and repetitive and not inventive sounds and themes. You can also listen to other groups try to cover BTS songs and see the stark difference in quality.
BTS many differences and lack of money and connections led to them being rejected by the industry in their early years and shunned by most other idols. Indeed, most of their S Korean friends in the industry are Indie artists to this day. Now they have surpassed the KPop industry, and indeed S Korea. Their fanbase is far more diverse in age, race, demographic, gender, and every metric than any other group. The majority of their fans are 30+ and nearly half are male. They are bigger by every metric: streams, sales, tour numbers, awards won, records broken, net worth - than the whole of the rest of the KPop industry combined. They are, in fact, the biggest band in the world. They brought $5 billion into S Korea in the last year **WHILE** they were all serving in the military. They are global artists. Their fans span the globe. They sell out the biggest stadiums in the world, all over the world like only the biggest global touring bands, but in more places. But they also top the charts and compete with the like of Taylor, Beyonce and Drake. No one else can do what they do. Suga/Agust D's solo world tour in 2023 was the biggest and highest grossing tour for a rapper in the history of the world, and he set the record for the highest grossing single shows for a rapper in history.

Explain how you listen to the music while talking over it and having a fun time without knowing what lyrics are? Having a good time? Don’t tell me this is a reaction. Not working unless you’ve listened to this several times already.
