We bought one hen locally when trying to replace our 13 chickens killed by 2 dogs! I liked her appearance so much I wanted to add her to our flock even thought she was coming with a poopy butt, and it is worst case of it I have ever seen! I was told she is super friendly and she is. Our next additions will be the Delaware. Such a sweet chicken!
I got 4 D chicks April 2021. They started laying in August & kept going through winter and onward. Stopped to molt in October, started up again Dec 21 2022. Shortest day of the year, laying 1-3 eggs a day. My neighbors love it. No lights or heat, but they are fine without. Loves to forage means loves to escape & explore. One clucks alot super Mama's girl, the rest more reserved. We're on a town lot 100x100 ft., with 20x20 ft fenced yard. Covered run (rains 80 in a yr here). Mud is always a farm problem here, but they do great. Love 'em.
I have six Delaware chicken hens.I really love their dispositions and their nice big brown eggs. I can let them forage in the yard without worrying they will migrate to a neighbors yard. They don't fly and are happy where they are at!
I live in a unique neighborhood in Phoenix AZ that was once a citrus plantation. When they subdivided to make it residential, they left the chickens behind and now we have over 1500 feral chickens free-living in the area. One of them lived in our yard when we moved into this house. My wife and daughter named him Emil. Sometime later he was injured in a fight and we brought him into the house to rehab him with the intention of releasing him when he was better. The problem with that plan? Now he won’t leave. He lives in our screen porch and his name is Emil… he’s my buddy and sits on my shoulder to watch TV. He hangs out with us in the morning and pecks our socks. He’s intelligent, curious, a rabid forager (we have a dirt box for him to forage in), and while he doesn’t like being netted or handled he loves to ride around on my shoulder. I’m the only one in the house that he will let handle him much, but that’s because I take no crap from him and will repeat an exercise until I get the result I want. He will fight back if attacked, and we are pretty sure he’s survived at least a couple cat attacks based on scars on his comb. I’ve seen him go toe-to-toe with a full-grown Rhode Island Red, but he has never shown aggression to a person or even preemptively attack our dog or cat. Well… he did peck the dog on the nose once but only because she was sniffing at him and got too close. Based on everything I can find on the internet he’s at least mostly Delaware… his size, color, and temperament all match the breed description almost perfectly. If anyone wants to see videos I’ll post links to the YT shorts I’ve made of him… I have been thinking about starting his own channel. Let me know what you think of that idea? Thanks for reading this super-long comment and I hope you have a fantastic week!
I inherited 2 hens when my son moved into city limits. They are mature about 2 YO now and have been very easy to maintain. Now planning on getting more hens, so likely will be getting more of this breed.
I have 3 roosters and 1 hen of the Delawares. We started with a total of 5, but one roo was hyperaggressive, so he was culled. I am still letting the other 3 grow out to decide who will be my keeper, my backup, and the other either rehomed or dinner. Overall, they have excellent temperaments (except the one), getting along with my other roosters and not being overly nasty with the hens. One of mine is a little more aggressive, but he is an excellent flock protector and comes running if any hen sounds agitated. They buddy up well with my 2 black jersey giant roosters. The meat is exceptional, but was a smidge stringy (though that may be due to not enough dry aging time). Leg meat was wonderfully flavorful and pleasant to eat. The hen lays enormous jumbo size eggs weighing between 75 and 80 grams.
@@king-um4lt Like to hatch or to eat? If you want them for eating then you'd have to find a Delaware keeper in your area. For hatching, you can actually buy Delaware chicks from places like Murray McMurray or Cackle hatchery.
We don’t have any Delaware’s for sale in central Indiana. The closest would be the white leghorns. I will be picking up 2-3 Leghorns this week hopefully. I have 2 Rhode Island Reds, 2 Easter Eggers and 1 Olive Egger. So I’m looking for diversity in egg color while trying to keep harmony with my little group. Thanks for all the videos. I’m new to chickens so I’m still learning a lot. Thanks for the info.
1 of my 4 girls is a Delaware. I named her Marcy because early on she was aggressive in taking food from her sisters, just like my brother Mark used to take my allowance without any feelings of guilt. LoL
i found a Delaware and Rhode island red rooster in the middle of the road and i wanna get them females but it's hard to get chickens in the middle of winter
I bought a Delaware it was supposed to be a pullet but at 9 weeks it's very aggressive and pushy with a good sized comb and waddles Looks like a hen but I'm beginning to wonder.
I have a Rhode Island rooster that came in a set of 4 supposedly female easter eggers little chicks I purchased. He is gorgeous, however, he is the most aggressive rooster I've ever seen, he torn one of my older laying chickens' comb apart and he would attack us all the time. My chickens were very stressed and terrified of him. He had to be put in a separate area. We are making him big and meaty so we can eat him. I don't want any roostes!!!
Who cares for the history of a chicken really? Just go to the point, temperament and eggs color, size and production. The breeders can read encyclopedias about chicken history as much as they want, but I couldn't care less.

I have 18 Delaware chicks. I can’t wait till they start laying eggs. The nicest birds that I have.

I just ordered my first Delawares. I'm excited to try them out.

Awesome chicken. I may get a few....perhaps a few juveniles/
So can they be bred? We are wanting a breed we can reproduce on our own and be self sustainable. Ty.
What is their average laying capacity.

4 delaware hens. 2 delaware roosters in our flock. The roosters will tolerate being held. They are not aggressive

Just bought a dozen the chick's a very friendly not flighty
How is the breast meat on Delaware? Is 3-4 lbs an expect-able dressed weight? Really good video BTW.
Great birds and the rooster is not mean. I had mine for over a year. Rooster is not mean and these birds are meaty
Yes 9
My Delaware started laying and they are small eggs. Not one layes large eggs. Disappointed

First year hens always lay small eggs but it can also depend on the bloodline. They should get larger over time.
