I learned a lot from your video! Thank you. I didnt realize I could use my 318i steering coupler as you did by removed the flexible joint and bolting the upper and lower universals together which will help putting the link back into the car with the engine still in the car. I'm going to bookmark this video so I can go back and watch again. THANKS!
Super details! I installed the z3 rack (Rhd car)but finally notice I need to shortten the linkage or add spacer to make it more straight . I may to the work this week!
Sorry to resurrect an old topic but I’m trying to find one of the hoses and it’s like it doesn’t exist but you’ve got it, it’s the hose in the center at the top of the screen at 9:30, half metal half rubber. could you tell me what part that is cause I thought it was a return line but I can’t find anything anywhere about it. Thanks
I have been fixing other things and not really driving the car. Drove it only a few times so far, gently. Working fine with a small leak, nothing much to report.
Thank you, however my BMW e30's steering rack is leaking from the right side, from the end of the rubber. I have no idea what to do, for a temp fix. I can't afford it. I must fix it. Any help?
Hi TJ, is it possible to just remove the steering coupling that connects the column to the rack without removing the rack? The reason I want to do this is to allow my exhaust manifold to be removed in order to weld the cracks. My situation is somewhat special. the manifold pipes sort of "wrap around" the steering column and it is impossible to take out the manifold without removing the coupling.
IIRC the bolts on that coupling can't be removed, so you can't just undo them and slide the coupling off. However, you might be able to wriggle the coupling off if you remove the bolts that hold the rack to the subframe and push the rack as far forwards as it can go.
Jack stands for supporting the car? It is better than relying on the hydraulic jack, but you should have a backup too e.g. slide the front wheels under the car in case the jack stands collapse.
@@PorchGarage yes. typo. i mean e46 which i am using now since 2017. leaks badly. purple tag. is yours taken from japan e46? how long does yours last? all these useless bmw racks leak. but e46 has best feel compared iwht e36 and trhen e30 worst. i saw a few sellers in shopee. not sure if okay. take a chance. most of these are not reconditioned or refurbished but just taken out from half cut cars i think.
There were 2 pipes connected to the header - one of these pipes was fouling on the steering link. I brought it to an exhaust shop - they cut this pipe and rerouted it to one side.
@@PorchGarage I was thinking about doing a E46 steering swap - looks like the exhaust down pipe is going to be another issue for me to figure out. Thanks for this feedback 👍
I bought my E46 steering rack from Shopee - shope.ee/8esIJsLQqe
Nice to see a E30 being restored!
Underrated e30 steering rack video. Legend!!

Have you found the swap to be a success or have you hit any issues? Tia.

Would the e46 pipes been easier to modify than the e30 ones if they hadn’t been cut?
I have no idea what the E46 hard lines would have been like 🤭
Ok,thanks for the reply and also for sharing your video.👌
did you have any problems with vibration since you deleted the rubber cushion in the linkage ?
Sorry, don't have much feedback to provide. I have barely driven the car as it has been in various states of repair 😅
Hey dosent the e46 rack of another car second hand, come with all this pipe kit already? Of will i need my orginal e30 pipe kit to fit on e46 rack?
The hoses on my e46 rack were cut and not included, so i reused the hoses from my e30.
Did you change the track rod ends i heard e36 are better and did you add rack spacers?

@PorchGarage if your rack hoses on e46 etc were not cut, would they still need bending, etc ?
I intend to do this myself. Is it safe to use jack stands? Where do I get a good reconditioned e36 purple tag rack?

I don't know where a good place is, but i got mine from Shopee
@@PorchGarage would you give me the contact in shopee please? mine is leaking badly now and need a replacement. thank you.
@th tan i bought from a seller called "Car zone Rs" on Shopee. But: (1) it does leak, and (2) it is an E46 rack not E36.

hi, may I know where you bought the e46 steering rack? Thank you
From Shopee 😁 This listing - shopee.com.my/product/44732058/8227744149?smtt=0.1569551-1645846672.9
I heard somewhere that there is a Yellow Tag rack which has better steering feel 🤷♂️
How did you modify the exhaust down pipe?
