The criminal who got stuck in the garage was able to win his case because he proclaimed that the homeowner should have had a ready supply of food fit for human consumption AND because the garage had no windows for him to break and get free from climbing through it.

That guy got paid out by the insurance company because of how the policy language read. Companies have since updated their contracts to basically say - no coverage extended to accidents that occurred during theft/vandalism to the person robbing and what not
It's a fake story - it was going around on forums and stuff like over a decade ago.

He got the money because the garage wasn't up to code. There has to be a button for the garage, a window, or a door to exist the garage.
The family was out of town when he got locked in.

The garage thief who got locked in absolutely could have let himself out, he just didn't have the knowledge. Like you can easily disconnect the door from the motorized mechanism and lift the door up manually, or there should be some controls on the motor itself to activate it and control the door. Dude stayed there for EIGHT DAYS and didn't even TRY to experiment with the door opening motor I bet. They're all designed in a way that in an emergency or power failure situation you should still be able to open the door.
