Sound More Natural in English with Reductions! (American Accent Training)

  • If you want to reduce your foreign accent, acquire a more American accent, or sound more natural speaking American English, reductions are so important! Reductions are changes in pronunciation that occur to certain words that native speakers don't stress in a sentence. These are usually grammatical words and words that don't add a lot of meaning to the sentence.
    In English, we don't give every word equal stress in a sentence. We slow down on words that convey a lot of meaning and rush through words that do not convey a lot of meaning. When we rush through those grammatical words, it changes their pronunciation so that they sound one way in isolation and another way in a sentence!
    If you pronounce these words the same way in isolation and in a sentence, your speech will sound unnatural to native speakers. While there's nothing wrong with that, if you want to sound more natural speaking English or reduce your foreign accent, using reductions is very important.

      I would say this about reduction. In my opinion reduction doesn't really exist for can , to , for , that but it's modification in a relax informal speech or in a fast speech. The speed of the speech modify the vocal sound between two consonants!

    I am convinced my accent is permanent at this point. Been learning english since 3rd grade, been consuming mostly english (american) content for years, and speaking on pretty much a native level for years. Ever since I moved to Canada (2 years ago) speaking english began to feel more natural to me. However, my accent remains the same.
    Its not like it matters, especially because I don't have a strong accent. But it gets annoying after a while to hear people constantly point out that you have it.

    Most of the words in my language are longer than in English, and still we don't shorten the majority of them. So I always wondered why it's so crucial for English speakers to shorten everything

    • @maryelcoaching
      @maryelcoaching  3 месяца назад

      It's because our rhythm is stress-timed, so we constantly alternate between short and longer syllables all throughout a sentence.

  • @artmx91
    @artmx91 2 года назад

    Oh, where in the world were you when I took my first lessons. Although, I didn' t know these "rules" my "technique" to improve my pronunciation has always been to imitate the cadence and the stress of the native americans. That works, and the good news is you can learn by simply watching netflix!
