I never thought of this song as being about adultery, instead I always felt it so deeply described the feeling of being in a on-again off-again relationship exactly like the one I was in for 11 years. You know that they are never going to fully commit to you, and maybe its better that way, but you keep letting your eyes be blinded by the fantasy that you could be happy together.
The song is open for several meanings. Maybe, for you, it's better suited this way. As someone commented previously, it can also mean the man being cheated. He knows about his wife's affair and still loves her and wants her... And is willing to forgive her.

Saw Sarah live, August of 2014, in the Austin City Limits intimate venue. There was no lip-syncing. Her voice was as clean, pure, and as perfect as you could ever imagine. I've been to tons of concerts (I'm 62 and of the Crosby, Stills, Nash &Young era), and Sarah's was the very BEST concert I've EVER witnessed, hands down.

This a great song, performed beautifully by Ms. McLachlan. The video is like watching a mini movie, so much emotion and strong acting. I have watched this video many times and reminds me we really have no control over our destinies.

For those of us who could have had the comfortable loveless reationship, but lit their lives a blaze for the real passion of their true love, thia song and video is perfect.
In that right now I thought opening up my comfortable loveless relationship would make it okay but a passionate toxic relationship is still toxic and messes you up just as badly emotionally.

whats tragic about this song is that the lyrics could apply to both the unfaithful wife and the husband suspects her infidelity. People think that love is such a wonderful thing but when you love the wrong person it can be a very binding and degrading thing.

Sarah has been with me threw the darkest days of my life. Her songs were depicted in those days but because of her music, I pushed through and for that I am a lifelong devoted fan. She is truly amazing and should be recognized as an icon in the music industry.

Canadian musicians dont receive the accolades nor the exposure many of them should. I say this as a long term fan, not as a Canadian. My earliest recollection of music was my father playing the Guess Who at home. My first concert was The Headpins, whom years later I who played the venue where I worked. Brian Adams, April Wine, Honeymoon Suite, Lee Aaron, Rufus Wainright, to name but a few. Theres a lengthy list of Canadian talent from the The Weeknd, I Can't Feel my Face to Sarah McLachan's cover of Blackbird, which surpasses the original by the Beatles, theres something for everyone.
