- The beggars anthem, or a comedic take on 1920's economic life?! Lionel Rothery was a popular 1920's recording artist, but surprisingly this is the first example I've found. Along with Fred Douglas, he was one of the prolific recording duo 'The Two Gilberts' Here they are, on a clearer recording: • I Want Some Money, sun... Played on my Marathon ext. horn gramophone, which can also play vertical cut (hill and dale) records.

Love this . I want some money too💰 😊
I've been collecting and listening for decades, and today is the first time I've heard Lionel Rothery. His discs don't show up in America.
I knew of him as one of 'The Two Gilberts' which as far as I know were purely a recording duo. This duo recorded from c.1922-c.1932 & were mainly led by Fred Douglas (also mainly a cover artist) the second 'Gilbert' varying down the years. The Two Gilberts & Fred singing solo, had massive sales for Regal & are easy to find. Their speciality seems to have been 1920's 'silly songs' & vocal versions of dance tunes. I collect & post Fred's records & The Two Gilberts. No doubt I'll find more Lionel Rothery, but these cover artists were allocated many pseuds, by cheaper & reissue labels, so can be hard to identify.
Long time, no see.
I've been waiting for you
Brilliant version psul. I have the two gilberts on regal doing this somewhere. 😊
I like their version too.
Love this. I wonder how much he wants ?
If you're offering I'm sure all donations will be gratefully received! Wonder what his recording fee was?
