This is beautiful writing and cinematography. It's a perfect example of a dialogue scene that features characters doing more than just standing/sitting in front of each other and talking.
Thanks Luke! I rehearsed with the actors, blocked according to character beats, and storyboarded it all to make sure we got the angles we wanted with our limited amount of film. Only shot what we needed!
Not only excellent cinematography but the acting was also 1st class. This makes one want to see more. Both actors were great but that young fellow has the potential to be a super star.
This is a fantastic dialogue scene. Also, I absolutely love the look of 16mm. And if I'm honest, you've just inspired me. I'm a film student and when I think of a short film I always try to do a beginning middle and end of a story, but this is just dialogue and its better than anything I've ever made. It's like one scene of a movie, but without the context. It's perfect. Thanks dude, you just taught me something.
What i like the most is that it doesn't have music or any extra effects that taints the impact of the dialogs and the acting. I really love it. It's basically 16mm Dogma 95, except for the aspect ratio.
Awesome, I wished it was a full feature. Can't stand the crap Hollywood makes on computers these days. I hope to shoot a feature on 16mm some day and films like this give me the faith that 16mm film is still alive and well but I'm 61 so I need to get it off the ground soon. Thanks for the inspiration!
Everything about this was perfect. I wanted to see more! The acting was great. Shots were great, the audio was great, and oh that amazing look from that 16mm film. Absolutely loved it!
currently a dodge student planning to make my junior year film on 16mm. this is super inspiring while getting my prep ready, especially seeing another dodge student shoot on film.
Despite the Beautiful story I love Super 16s & Arri SR2s Texture, warmth and realness that it adds to the footage as if you just saw it happening in real life couple of hours ago in a flourishing farm while family waiting there for you at house in there.
This is excellent, Mr. Baumgardner, particularly on a technical level. Never knew 16mm could be so terrific looking. Well done, and I look forward to seeing what comes next from you!
I love the language of this short. The composition amazingly contributes to the dialogue’s subtext. I also love the texture of the image. Do you happen to remember what set of lenses did you shoot with?
I don't remember the lenses at this point. They were primes (not that tells you much). I did work on blocking with the actors and the camera angles to align with the story so I'm glad you noticed it! Thanks for watching!
Beautifully shot and a captivating story. This is what bothers me about youtube, good content doesn't get the views it deserves. You should have gotten at least half a million views! How much was the film/scanning in total?
Imagine how boring this would have looked if it was a digital video camera. Immediately i felt like im watching an actual film, the nuanced performances translates so well. No amount of color grading or fancy digital shutter manipulation can achieve this.
Thanks so much for watching. It was super 16 and we only had a limited amount of film. So only 1-2 takes max, so rehearsals, blocking, and wild line takes were key. Great learning experience!
I think this film is good, but could use some re-editing and sound work. Looks amazing, but a little too much expositional dialogue and it's hard to hear what they're saying half the time. Can tell it was a personal story, enjoyed the movie! Arri SR2 is the greatest camera ever made imho
Despite the knowledge that my opinion is irrelevant, I can't go without the necessity of expressing myself on the subject of film vs digital. First things first: I'm a film student, but that doesn't matter. What I'd like to point out is that I've been analyzing different Digital Cinema Cameras (Ursas, Alexas, Epic Weapons...) and to be honest, I dislike their look very much. As sharp and clean as it may be, simply doesn't feel like a movie. Although this was shot on film and digitally scanned for editing and distribution, therefore making it a digital product, the look and feel is much more organic and beautiful. The discipline of film is different and so the result is different. You can't fake film on digital. No matter how many overlays you apply in post. Congratulations on the film, I'm sure you and the team put a lot of effort into it.
SH concoct - hope you don't mind me chiming in, but this is VERY likely Super 16mm film, which has a wider image because it also uses the area reserved for the sound track on prints. It's a professional theatrical film camera format. The exact aspect ratio is 1.66:1, so you only have to zoom and crop very little top and bottom to get a sharp 16:9 image. Cropped regular 16mm (1.37:1) would be much grainier and softer. Stretching the image would lead to undesired distortion. Unfortunately many a 16mm film project does not include the exact camera model and format (gate) in the description. In another reply Mr. Baumgardner states he used an Arri SR2 (excellent camera BTW!), these cameras were built for easy full conversion to Super 16mm, so I guess that was the case. Hope this information helps.
Don't know why anyone would waste money on pro digital throw away cameras when super 16mm is vastly superior in image quality. We'll, I do know why, people don't want to learn how to operate a camera and want a computer to do it for them.
I think cool thing would be when young man is in the shot alone sky should be dominant, when the older guy is alone, the earth and when they are together horizon should be in the middle of the screen.

check out this guy's instagram @k3super16mm. he seems crazy
Very fine film. Been awhile since I felt so engaged and loved the characters and the story. Bravo!
Wow. I was just looking for 16mm film footage, but I found so much more. Thank you.
Not only excellent cinematography but the acting was also 1st class. This makes one want to see more. Both actors were great but that young fellow has the potential to be a super star.
Subtle piece of film-making. Simple , effective camera that doesn't interfere with the well-paced acting. A pleasure.
WORK OF ART
Dodge College alum here.....damn good job. Love the pace, not pretentious, and authentically engaging. 16mm was a smart choice. Keep it up!
Okay this was just art. Simple sweet screenplay, masterful blocking, seamless editing, all elevated with that legendary camera and stock.
This is the essence of film making, great work!
Thanks for watching and for the kind words!
This is a fantastic dialogue scene. Also, I absolutely love the look of 16mm.

Very very good work.
that was really well shot and preformed, i loved the subtle power struggle emphasised by the land and sky dividing the frame
Simply beautiful!!!
How much meaning and emotion can be packed in 6 minutes?
A lot...
What i like the most is that it doesn't have music or any extra effects that taints the impact of the dialogs and the acting. I really love it. It's basically 16mm Dogma 95, except for the aspect ratio.
Visually beautiful film and touching story. I'm amazed at the quality that Super 16mm can do.
Awesome, I wished it was a full feature. Can't stand the crap Hollywood makes on computers these days. Dude very nice composition in every single shoot.
Thanks! It was rehearsed, blocked and storyboarded. Only had 1-2 takes per angle.
Man that was a great film & story... Thanks for sharing!
this deserves so much more attention. Truly brilliant.
Thank you sir! Feel free to share liberally!
Most well done short film since
Everything about this was perfect. I wanted to see more! The acting was great. Shots were great, the audio was great, and oh that amazing look from that 16mm film. Absolutely loved it!
Saw this few years ago, but couldn't able to find it since then. Now that I have found it again, I am so happy. This is pure cinema.
Wow. I am honored that you sought it out again! Glad you enjoy it that much!
Absolutely beautiful... the dialogue and cinematography are great! Amazing work!!
Nicely done. Inspiring.
This is so well done. So simple and perfectly executed with cinematography and dialogue.
currently a dodge student planning to make my junior year film on 16mm. this is super inspiring while getting my prep ready, especially seeing another dodge student shoot on film.
The montage the mise en scène the actors are great is not easy to did what you did well done👍
Man, 16mm. Nothing like it!
Nada supera la calidad de imagen cinematográfica que el propio celuloide.
A+ stuff, this looks amazing
This is fantastic

Beautifully done 🤙🏻
Well that was a delightful surprise. Well done.
Bravo what a great lesson learned
This is excellent, Mr. Baumgardner, particularly on a technical level. Never knew 16mm could be so terrific looking. Well done, and I look forward to seeing what comes next from you!
found it 12 years later. fucking amazing!
Thx for watching!
Simple yet effective. Phenomenal!
Beautiful work! Digital can't have this look and even if it gets close, it's still fake mimicing. This is the real shit and used really well.
Amazing work!!!! Can’t believe this doesn’t have a million views!
Generous praise! Thanks for watching!
this is great, artistic yet incisive. y’all really snapped
This is something that digital cameras can never capture.
Finally found a very good short film
i just stumbled on this and this is great 👍
Thanks for watching! Share if you care to!
Great video!
Beautiful film!
Thanks for watching!
DAMN! this is legendary!
I thought I was watching Superman for a minute. Scared the hell outta me there!
Still waiting for an iPhone app, that ouputs footage like this.
My God this is amazing!!!!!
Thanks Skully!
Damn that 16mm looks sweet...
This was really good, great job.
Thanks for watching and for the encouraging words!

EXCELLENT.
❤❤❤. How come 16mm sharper here then all Bolexes?! Did I miss somthing?
Good job
Beautifully shot and a captivating story. This is what bothers me about youtube, good content doesn't get the views it deserves. You should have gotten at least half a million views!
How much was the film/scanning in total?
You know what this reminds me of? The Straight Story.
Haven't seen that. will have to check it out!
Wow, that looks great. Like old good movies) Can you tell what film stock you used?
Good job (y)
Why u no longer make films like that?
wow
Hello Jason,
beautiful film! I saw in one of your comments you used an ARRI SR2, just wondering what kind of stock you used. Thanks!
good shit
Imagine how boring this would have looked if it was a digital video camera. Immediately i felt like im watching an actual film, the nuanced performances translates so well. No amount of color grading or fancy digital shutter manipulation can achieve this.
Can I ask what lens(es) you used for this?
Beautiful film. May I ask what camera and film stock were used? Thanks
great.
this video looks like a movie from 1998 or 2004 because it looks like it can be a horror movie like Chucky the doll from 1990
cool
Awesome! What super 16mm film stock did you use? Keep up the great work!
Why tarantino didn't use sr3/2 for once upon a time in hollywood, this camera have a retro look than panavision xl2 and arri 435
Great work. And a really perfect scan. Very nice quality. Was that taken in super16?
Thanks so much for watching. It was super 16 and we only had a limited amount of film. So only 1-2 takes max, so rehearsals, blocking, and wild line takes were key. Great learning experience!
on what film this was shoot?
Lovely! How did you get the quality of 16mm this "clean?" I've seen some other 16mm shorts and they're more grainier and grittier. Thanks.
It's the stock, camera and the scan all contribute to the grain.
what lenses u used ? did u used one camera?
I think this film is good, but could use some re-editing and sound work. Looks amazing, but a little too much expositional dialogue and it's hard to hear what they're saying half the time. Can tell it was a personal story, enjoyed the movie! Arri SR2 is the greatest camera ever made imho

Why, there are no black bars on screen because it is 16mm camera .or you stretched the original

I love the look but the lack of movement in the film makes the dialogue "boring"
Bad acting and bad cadence from the actors to say the least.
But the opening scenes are really good though as well as some of the shots.
I think cool thing would be when young man is in the shot alone sky should be dominant, when the older guy is alone, the earth and when they are together horizon should be in the middle of the screen.
Which film stock did you use?
