One of the brilliant things for me about this particular "Making Records..." is the concept "this is a great drum recording, that's how drums sound, but this is what I did to get them to the final mix". I don't think this should go un-appreciated. I've been worrying for years, "my drum recordings are fine into the box, but I feel like there's a lot of work to be done to get them 'finished'. What am I doing wrong?". I also find myself thinking, "are my clients thinking, 'this guy doesn't know how to record drums properly and has to "fix" them with plugins'. This video has really helped adjust my perspective in a very positive way, so thanks for making it available, Eric!
@@DUwins Great advice but with a leviathan of a problem lurking beneath it. And its why I'm still a journeyman producer/mixer after... 20 years. Yeah, you can do what you want to make it sound the way you want, but you can do things to individual elements, tracks, whatever, and those changes can cause serious problems elsewhere. You can basically be creating problems for yourself. And later, when Leviathan swallows your ship whole, you may not even know that you created that leviathan as the ships timbers snap around you. Honestly, I'm a little trigger shy by this point. I see pro mixers and their MASSIVE eq boosts and it makes me sweat. I've become so conservative now. Like I'm afraid to touch the audio, like I want to do as little to it as possible. I try to get what I want on the way in, and from there, I do subtle nudging, gently shading. But my stuff is weak now. I don't know. It's easy advice to give, but difficult to put into practice when the complications of doing what you want to hear what you want destroy your ability to make other elements sound like you want them to sound, and destroy your ability to make the totality of everything sound like the totality of what you want it to sound like. That's my hard earned 2 cents.
you have literally just blown my mind into bits and pieces, what a revolution for bedroom warriors trying to get good drum sounds, you really opened up alot of out of the box thinking with this video and I appreciate it....holy cow I cant wait to start tracking and just start trying different stuff like this....ty
Hey All! I found out that Greg did an "Into The Lair" episode with Dave Pensado that talks in detail about their drum recording approach. It is a great way to get more detail on how the drums were originally captured. Check it out! ruclips.net/video/wxxepqIwpB0/видео.html
Eric, thank you so much for sharing this stuff with us. These are always full of solid GOLD information. I would love for you to do some more of these tech talks sometime if you feel it!
I still come back to these videos ALL the time! Something I would seriously pay good money for is a full stream of you mixing a song (or even just drums) live and talking through your decisions. It's already great to see the end result, but seeing the failed experiments involved and listening along to know how far to push things would be amazing. Hope you're well, all the best!
I've watched this particular episode so many times. I have gotten so much helpful and inspiring stuff from your youtube channel. Thank you so much for doing this.
I'm so glad I found your channel, thanks for all of your time to teach us these things and making us understand the process properly. Could you also a hip hop one as well?
Really Great!!!! I have always liked your mixes very much and I really enjoyed realizing that I think in a similar way when approaching a mix. Thank you for sharing your knowledge so clearly. Really ... thank you very much.
I took so much from this video. Has some great tips and when applied in my own way has resulted in a killer drum sound in a track I'm mixing! Big thanks Eric!
i love you mannnnn...just discovered you after watching your interview with warren. that you would take the time to pass on the knowledge you've accrued says alot about you. may god bless you fa dat i know i do. THANK YOU. the best to you and you're family. happy new year from Kansas.
My Brain just cannot absorb so much at one time. need to watch these videos a number of times to gain all of this amazing knowledge. Eric you're a music production genius
This is just unbelievably helpful. I've been working on a drum mix and been stumped as to how to get more life out of the recordings and this has given me so many ideas.
Imagine a real star like Eric sharing his secrets to mixing with all of us. So glad I was one of the first to sub to his channel. One of the most talented person on this planet and so humble. Thank you for doing this for us. Cheers from a big fan. I learn so much from your vids. The name of your channel makes so much sense, its not a mixing channel its how you Make a Record channel.
If there's one superhero in the industry I've been wanting to study, who's world I've been dying to peek into, it's Eric Valentine. I just discovered this channel a couple weeks ago, and can't believe it's real. Eric, thank you so much for your contribution to art, and for your willingness to share with your community. I can't say I want to be just like you, but the opportunity to learn from an individual for whom I hold such high esteem is absolutely invaluable.
I bought the eponymous T-Ride new in the record store a long time ago and I've been a huge fan ever since. There was an article from the early 90s where it was mentioned that the big music producers were upset because you produced T-Ride yourselves, and they said something to the effect of "Who is this Valentine kid, and where did he learn to get sounds like that?!". I actually saw T-Ride live in a small club in Buffalo way back, and spoke to Jeff Tyson after the show. He was really cool chatting about guitars and such. These videos are fantastic for me; I see your scientific deconstruction of sound as being spot-on. Many musicians go on and on about certain gear and sounds, but have no idea what's really happening to make them sound that way. Distortion on drums = genius!!
As someone who never worked under anyone at a proper studio and cut my teeth by myself at our project studio, thus causing all sorts of misconceptions and bad habits- not to mention a feeling of being lost..., I can proudly say that this single handedly is one of the greatest helps I've ever had concerning drum mixing. Thank you so much for everything you do, Eric.
I went through this videon in detail on a drum recording a friend of mine did for me. Very rewarding! Q: I would love to see a video where you do a "mix rescue" - mixing drums that are not that perfectly recorded for example. I never have the opportunity to record with the best mics, consoles etc so a common mixing situation for me always means trying to get a good sound from a not so good recording. Would love to see how you work in a situation like that Eric. Thank you a million once again for your videos!
Years later, I am getting really into natural drums sounds, and I am trying to use the dry kit as a reference for the drums im recording,, it is so freaking good dude!, and your mix on it just mad it so explosive, just incredible!
I feel like I need to comment twice... 1. How the ever livin’ hell could ANYONE could dislike this video? 2. This is the best channel I’ve ever seen for what I’ve been wanting to learn! A lot of what I was hoping for was a way to find answers to questions that would save me weeks and weeks of time... like which saturation plug in to use or not use.... or wether or not A/D and D/A would cause degradation in the fidelity.... and many more questions I’d been driving myself crazy with have been answered since finding this channel! Not because it’s the “right” or “wrong” way to do something... but because it’s the “vibe” I’m going for with my kind of production. Thank you, Eric!
Eric, thanks so much for doing these videos, they’re truly a great resource. I absolutely love Grace Potter’s album Midnight, especially the song Delirious. In fact, I use it as a reference track because I think everything just sits in its own spot perfectly in the mix. So for selfish reasons, if you’re thinking of doing another deep dive into a mix, I would love to see Delirious off of Midnight by Grace Potter. Again, thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge of audio and mixing.
