  • In this episode I finally start back working on the storm shelter after a couple of weeks of cold weather and rain. Today's plan is to paint, install the AC and to cut the last of the ventilation holes. Plans are below of the wooden DIY storm shelter build.

    That air conditioner is a clear path for a large branch or 2x4 to fly right thru it, the condenser coil and evaporator will not provide any resistance, and you may have schrapnel and refrigerant, and refrigeration oil all over the inside of your shelter.

      Thus the reason the steel fold down door was made! In the heart of a storm the door will be bolted OVER the AC unit. See it hanging up on the roof, can be deployed in seconds.

    I like the idea of a backup solar panel to allow you to charge a phone or run a small fan/light. It is coming together very nicely. Looking forward to seeing the house build.

    Great job sir. Can’t help but think to firefighting days and how best to escape through that AC hole. If had a foldable kitchen step ladder, if needed, inside and put up a sturdy handle above the window on the outside of the building similar to a bath towel rack to pull on. Step up then reach through and twist so you would go back first through the hole. Reaching up makes the shoulders more narrow and if you go out first you can then help support Tiffany as she makes her way out. could also have a similar handle on the inside to pull up on and kick feet first through the window. Just a thought. Love the work

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  3 года назад

      Well I have not mentioned it much, but there will be a futon right below the AC for a step up. Outside is another story! But to be honest, I'll dive through that thing if need be for escape or oxygen lol 😉.

    There are pictures of EF-3 tornado damage that show a 2x4 stuck inside of a 6-inch concrete curb. Building a wooden shelter is better than nothing, but dont kid yourself that you are truly safe against a strong storm.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  4 месяца назад +1

      Same goes for those 1/4 inch wall tiny tornado shelters everyone puts in their garages. At best they are for small flying debris. Our states most common tornados are ef0 and ef1. I'll be perfectly fine in this. Meanwhile most people ride out tornados in their hollow walled homes.

    • @shane7133

      @TKCL Just curious, would you ride out a CAT 5 hurricane in this shelter?

  • @mackjenkins7721
    @mackjenkins7721 3 года назад

    Oh wow you had a chance to jump on the shelter today. I know you happy about that you have been waiting. Man that escape hole look small for you to get out on camera but I know it's wide enough for you to get out. I'm surprised you didn't get any paint on you. you're an excellent painting. She coming along well.

      @TKCL  3 года назад

      Yes it was about time I got back on it. I'll have a video out in a couple of days showing that I can fit through that hole. I know it looks small, but it's bigger in person.

    Another great video, Andrew. I would permanently mount inside whatever tool necessary to remove the screws/bolts holding that A/C in the window. Hate to be trapped cause you didn't have a screwdriver.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  3 года назад +2

      Oh I absolutely plan on that, thought I mentioned it. All it takes is a #2 screw driver, or a desperate 200lb man's shoulder at speed 🤣

  • @HWPcville
    @HWPcville 3 года назад

    How about some grab bars attached to the ceiling in front of the A/C unit? This would facilitate getting your feet up and into the A/C opening to help get your body thru. Also, maybe a thick floor mat to protect against the thin edge of the angle iron. Once my wife had to come in thru the house window because she had locked her keys inside. The edge of the window frame bruised her hips & thighs expectantly and she was not a happy camper. lol

      I now have a futon in front of the AC, very easy to step up and out now.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  3 года назад +2

      I've thought about that, really have. I'd be worried about the exhaust killing us though, assuming the vent fan didn't work. There's also thousands of nails in the wall too. I'd ruin a chain before cutting through. Having two escape routes, backup ventilation and our cell phones. I feel extremely safe in it.

    Not trying to be a critic but how do you plan on reaching the ground once you start out the escape hatch? Will you go feet first or head first? Quite a drop if you go head first. I would have lowered the ac opening about a foot. Would make it easier to get thru the hole as well as the drop on the outside. I know you mentioned a couch in there but I would go 2 recliners. Then you would have a place to sit and in the event of long term of being in there, a place to sleep.

    • @TKCL
      @TKCL  3 года назад

      The futon was exactly for that reason, a place to sit and even better place to sleep.

      @@TKCL I had the same question, not because I doubt you'll fit, but climbing through a hole in a wall up at shoulder level ain't as easy as it seems. Might I suggest tossing a folding step ladder in the shelter to help with that? Or, maybe install a grab bar on the ceiling so you can go out feet first?

    • @TKCL
