You coulnd't though, that's why intel caught so much flak , all these cpu's had the same amount of pins, but only 2 generations per chipset were supported, if you had the 6100 the best you could upgrade to was the 7700K , 8th and 9th gen were on chipset Z390/Z370.

I have a 9900k. There is no scenario that will make me choose the 12400 over the 9900k of even the 12400 yields higher fps. For someone who has all types of PCs and have been into stuff like this for over 30 years these tests are cool but they never measure user experience. The smoothness of a 9900k will be better than this chip and trust me the 12400 is a darn good cpu for what it offered compared to I5 chips. NOW… if this was a 12600 of any chip yes the 9900k will lose due to the cores which will generate more smoothness and will choose the 12600 any day.

Part of the reason is the test is at an extreme. If you were to run the same test with an RTX 3060 then the framerates would be identical, and if the test was run with the 3080 at 1440p then the framerates would be very close.
Hardware unboxed did a test with the 5700x against the 5600 and in some games the extra cores helped. However, the only time the extra cores helped is when the tests were run at 1080p with an RX 6950xt. At 1440p the 5700x and 5600 were a lot closer, and with an RX 6600xt the framerates were nearly identical.
The last reason is the 9900k can clock a lot higher on all cores. As you can see, the i5-12400f is only clocks to 4.0ghz across all cores. The i5-12600k would beat the 9900k because it clocks to 4.5ghz across all cores.
