- A 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit the Northeast Friday morning, shaking buildings in several states, including New Jersey, New York and Connecticut.

Bear in mind the richter scale is Logarithmic: 3 is 10x stronger than 2, 4 is 100x stronger than 2. For the east coast, this is a significant quake, given many buildings are not designed to be quake resistant
This, I was bemused when they said "The aftershock was 4.0, almost as strong as the original 4.8 richter" no is wasn't

I live in Canada and was talking to my niece in Layfyette, NJ. when she felt the 4.0 aftershock. She also felt the first one which was stronger. My nephew in Warsaw, NY also felt the first quake.

I was in class when everything suddenly started shaking. I thought it was construction. No one even said anything like it never happened
Everything is relative. For us here in Los Angeles only a 6.0 earthquake is worth our time but when it's below 40 degrees or rains then we panic.
I'm on Long Island and I felt both the earthquake and the aftershock. I remember the quake in 2011, too.

I live on the sixth floor of a seven story building. A bus passed just as the quake hit, and I couldn't believe it was from the bus. Busses pass all day, and the building doesn't shake. Then dishes and knick knacks ratted, and the floor shook violently. I knew right away it was an earthquake. Had the radio on, but news reports of the temblor didn't come on for another fourteen minutes.

@@aceboogisback9946 my point is east coast with cities like NYC with skyscrapers is not a commonly known area for earthquakes, otherwise building such high rises as residential apartments is asking for trouble. Do you agree?

that's because it's pure rock underneath, quakes on the east side tend to feel like 7.0 quakes at 4.8

I live in Los Angeles and we are more than use to earthquakes. For us it's only worth out time if it's above 6.0. Everything is relative, New Jersey is use to freezing temperatures, we are use earthquakes.

I live in Philadelphia, only 3 miles from Center City. I live on the top floor of a high rise apartment building and the building shook like it was on rubber bands !! 😮 I wasn't scared but it was a strange feeling, to be sure.

I am 10 miles away and it went on for me about 30+ seconds, it was so crazy and scary. If you put 4 pairs of jean on one side of the washer and it's on spin cycle... the banging noise it would make as it spins and the vibration thoughout the house X1000 is the only way to explain it. but that is not even close.

4.8 isn't even a quake. It's a tremor.... Where I live (Ind) you get 4.8s every week somewhere. it's the 6. up that can do the damage depending on location and depth...
4.8 is nothing for us on the San Andreas but the falts back east are vastly more scary like the New Madrid falt
California buildings are required to be earthquake compliant while east coast building can fall apart from something that you consider tame.
That thing was beyond a 4.8 that at least was a 6.2 that thing was strong as it can be.
