    Series: “Countdown to Pentecost”
    Matthew 6:23; 6:19-23; James 5:11b; James 1:23-25; Romans 14; Galatians 6:1-2
The eyes are the windows to the soul … have you ever heard this? If you look into those eyes in a mirror, will you see goodness or … something else? This morning, I want to discuss more than your eyes. I want to discuss having an eye for compassion.
An idiom is a phrase that, when taken as a whole, has a meaning you wouldn't be able to deduce from the meanings of the individual words. An English example would be: “It is raining cats and dogs.”
… but if you have an 'evil eye' [if you are stingy] your whole body will be full of darkness. If, then, the light in you is darkness, how great is that darkness! (Matthew 6:23, The Complete Jewish Bible Translation)
You see, the Hebrew idiom: “evil eye” means “being stingy!” Can we take it one step further and agree that a “bad eye” or “evil eye” is someone who is not very generous?
Where is your treasure? Jesus wants you to have treasure in Heaven! What does treasure in Heaven look like on Earth? It looks like compassion. (Matthew 6:19-23)
We should have a “good eye” meaning that we should be generous with our compassion on Earth.
Doesn’t it make sense that God’s kids would be full of compassion like their Spiritual Father Who art in Heaven? (James 5:11b)
