Icarus... In ancient Greek mythology, Icarus (Ikaros) was the son of Daedalus (Daedalos). Daedalos was an ancient Greek skillful architect and craftsman, seen as a symbol of wisdom, knowledge and power. Loooong story short, Daedalos and Icarus were imprisoned by the Minoan King (King Minos of Crete). Daedalos created wings for both of them to escape from the island of Crete and go back to mainland Greece by flying. On of the components of the wings, that bound together the structure was wax. Daedalus warned his son not to fly close to the sun because the wax will be melted and he will fall. Icarus in his youth and slight arrogance did not listen to his father, and the sun melted his wings, resulting Icarus to fall and die.... Many meaning behind this story right??!! This is a "fresh" take on the story of the mad scientist, more specifically the irresponsible scientist. Their hubris leads to destruction because they can't understand the difference between "Is" and "ought". This is an even more sophisticated version because Daedalos has all the right qualities and he in fact is NOT the scientist filled with hubris. His creation is made from necessity, not just scientific curiosity. His creation is trying to do something humans always aspired to do, fly. His objective is to save his own life and especially his son's life. Everything about him is noble. And yet... When put on the hands of a person without his qualities, this creation becomes his doom. Would he still make it so he could escape if he knew his son would die? Probably not. Hubris can make the most amazing and brilliant invention become a tool of death. Usually the story would have an irresponsible scientist creating something for the sake of creating it, without thinking of the consequences. The creation would become something bad for humanity. In this case, the creator is not flawed but the price he pays is so harsh that it's scary. Even if a creator is making something that is meant to do good, others will not have his wisdom to know how to use it. This song is likely a parallel to the creation of the airplane. The first disk of Piece of Mind has the first song about war, the next song about the human condition, the next about inventions, even if invented by the best of humanity, becoming tools of disaster. The last is about war too. Iron Maiden always hits the spot with their songs.

Nikko has that drum set custom made for this tour. It features many incarnations of Eddie in the graphics on each drum. He's my favorite drummer--bare-footed, sits super-low, has 15,000 drinks and uses every one. And the happiest bloke in metal!
From the album " piece of mind " released in 1983 this has almost 40 years , seems like it was yesterday i listen this for the first time and it was 39 years ago . Im old .

I saw them on this tour in Sacramento and I was right up front on the floor in front of the stage.. such an amazing performance and the heat from his torches I felt burnt my eyebrows off at one point in time LOL

1 of my favorite Iron Maiden songs. Saw them on this tour at the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn, NY. Great show. Great setlist. It was my 5th time seeing them and it was one of the best shows I've seen. Bruce was about 60 here and still sounds great.
