SR, I usually try to "set up" the shot by encouraging the fish to go where I want it to go. You can't do it all the time but when you can, it's a big help. When free shafting, you want to try and stone the fish as often as possible, or at least hurt it bad enough to close with or double tap it. The best shot is from slightly behind and off to the side around 45 degrees or so. Driving the spear through the head and out the other side. Avoid straight through shots when free shafting especially with a lot of power. Thanks for watching, Best, Dan

RB, I ran the Yamaha 350's for 5 years and only had one issue with one of them which Yamaha covered 100% under warranty. They were great motors and I enjoyed them. The Suzukis are on a whole 'nother level. Probably 15% better all around economy and night/day difference in seas. I ran in 80nm the other night into a 20K head wind with heavy rain, screaming gust, etc.etc., boat ran 20K burning 18GPH. Yammies would have done it but in that scenario with single prop slipping , have burned 30 gph easy. Remember it's a 44' dive boat with 38 tanks and lots of ice/fish. Hey Darryl, experience and time in the water def help. The gun makes a big difference as well, once you find a gun you like and is suitable for what you want to do, get it set up right and then don't change things. Use the same size bands and the same spears. If you're always changing stuff around, it'll really be hard to achieve the level of accuracy you want. Best, Dan
He uses a custom made spear gun he builds up based on a Sea Hornet design using better parts and tighter tolerances . and he has added extra things to make his job easier .
I don't spearfish at all, but the video of the bottom and all it's inhabitants are really interesting. Efficient of you to get headshots, I would imagine it's fairly humane too. Quick, sudden, painless. The association between sharks and blue runners is intriguing. Is that just a deep water thing or inshore as well?
The1, In our area we don't usually see Blue Runners in real shallow water so I've only seen it in 50' or deeper. It's almost a given that when you're seeing Blue Runners that Sandbars or Duskys will be in the mix. Best, Dan
He has learned that he must try for those headshots , or plan to chase the fish around to get his spear back . Chasing the fish uses up time you could be shooting another fish .
Pete, it's an Algae Bloom we get in this area every year. Some years are worse than others. When I was a kid, we used to call it the June Bloom. Nowadays it usually first appears in late April or early May. Best, Dan
Great skills as always. I thought 1 min in and no fish and then you started stacking em. Also let us know what gas ur burning down there. Great job, can't wait to get back in the water.
The dive was over with , and he also does not like those Lion fish . So why not take a really big Lion fish to go when he sees one . They require special handling so he can't just add them to his stringer .
@@danmacmahon3973 Thanks for the reply Dan, So I sailed from Texas across the gulf to the Little shark river in the Glades then down to key west, defiantly some interesting and fishy areas along the route from shark river to the keys
Dam fine hop, never a bad thing to stick it to a Lion fish either, bastards are everywhere now. Same people who complain head to the frozen section because they trust the Gordon’s fisherman. No clue
That's for sure BF44.....We've done a mainly Lion Fish trip before and I felt pretty good about clearing them off some ledges. I don't usually mess with them on deeper dives (see my "The Little Things Video"). When we're working shallower during the colder months, we take a good amount of them. Best, Dan

Sorry guys but when you use air from a bottle is not spearfishing its stealing in Greece and in Italy it is forbitten to use it. You use only one breath from the surface.
Couldn't disagree more. Hard to use a snorkel in 80m of water. It's a big world out there and what Greece and Italy choose to do are their business. What other places do is their business. Dan

This is not Sportfishing but it is a type of Spearfishing . You should be watching Freediving videos . This is a Commercial License not a Recreational License he works with . His job is to collect fish for other people to eat , and he MUST sell EVERYTHING to his supplier . That supplier sells FRESH FISH to restaurants so there will be fish on the menu when you show up for dinner with your family .

BobCat, I also enjoy free dive spear fishing for fun. It's just too deep to do where we usually dive. Free Shafting is just faster and works better in this area, unless you're hunting pelagic's. Appreciate you watching, Best, Dan
Dan You ought to bring the boat over to the east coast For the upwelling plenty of big juicy black belly’s... I’m in port canaveral I know a lot of guys that commercial dive and they put a hurtin on em
Quan, unfortunately my Commercial Federal Permit is only good in the Gulf. The Atlantic requires a different permit. But if I could bring her over there I def would! Best, Dan
It all takes time , and it would also bloody up the water and maybe attract a shark over there . Most of his deeper dives he has maybe 3-4 minutes MAX on the bottom , and dispatching a wounded fish would easily use up another 30 seconds to a minute out of his 4 he has available .
He is very selective. You would drop your line all day and drag up all sorts. At these depths, there is no catch and release. get a bit more experience before you trip.

Use the same size bands and the same spears. If you're always changing stuff around, it'll really be hard to achieve the level of accuracy you want. Best, Dan
What you do with those fish? eat them? sell them?
Hey ZK, yes, it's a commercial boat and we sell whatever we spear! Thanks for watching, Best, Dan
You were getting some groceries there buddy! What gun is that?
👍👍👍👍
He uses a custom made spear gun he builds up based on a Sea Hornet design using better parts and tighter tolerances . and he has added extra things to make his job easier .
La verdadera pesca submarina se hace a pulmón y no este mal chiste de pescador
Me quedo aquí pensando, ¿por qué alguien que vive a 8.000 km de distancia pierde el tiempo escribiendo reglas que no conoce?
And the lion fish hair cut.
Yikes!
🤣🤣🤣🤣 gotta be the dumbest fish in the gulf
What is that gumbo?
Pete, it's an Algae Bloom we get in this area every year. Some years are worse than others. When I was a kid, we used to call it the June Bloom. Nowadays it usually first appears in late April or early May. Best, Dan
ARE YOU SOLO DIVING HERE IN THIS VIDEO?
JT, on that dive, yes. Best, Dan
Great skills as always. I thought 1 min in and no fish and then you started stacking em. Also let us know what gas ur burning down there. Great job, can't wait to get back in the water.
DR, thanks. On the MG, I usually run 28%-32% Nitrox depending on depth. Best, Dan
Lol why the lion fish at the end
The dive was over with , and he also does not like those Lion fish . So why not take a really big Lion fish to go when he sees one . They require special handling so he can't just add them to his stringer .
Red grouper says I'm stupid. I'm Good to eat though.
They really aren't the sharpest knife in the drawer.....Best, Dan
@@danmacmahon3973 thanks for the replys . Your a cool dude Mr. Mac

Thanks Omar! I appreciate it! Best, Dan
did it ever happened that fish ran off with ur rod
SR, very very rarely. I try not to take high risk shots as I hate loosing shafts! Best, Dan
Do Lyon Fish actually have a market value or you just kill them becouse they are an invasive species?
MrM. they pay $5.00 pound for them, so there's that. I like taking them out as well. They sure play hell on small fish. Best, Dan
Is this the keys?
Doyle, no it's a large area in the NE corner of the Gulf of Mexico. Called the Florida Middle Grounds. Awesome area! Best, Dan
@@danmacmahon3973 Thanks for the reply Dan, So I sailed from Texas across the gulf to the Little shark river in the Glades then down to key west, defiantly some interesting and fishy areas along the route from shark river to the keys
Grande pescatore sportivo
Dam fine hop, never a bad thing to stick it to a Lion fish either, bastards are everywhere now. Same people who complain head to the frozen section because they trust the Gordon’s fisherman. No clue
That's for sure BF44.....We've done a mainly Lion Fish trip before and I felt pretty good about clearing them off some ledges. I don't usually mess with them on deeper dives (see my "The Little Things Video"). When we're working shallower during the colder months, we take a good amount of them. Best, Dan
Fisherman you are forward a lot .....
YOU ARE A KILLER NOT A HUNTER
UNFORTUNATELY IT IS POACHING
Nope, legal permitted commercial spear fishing boat.
He is very selective. You would drop your line all day and drag up all sorts. At these depths, there is no catch and release. get a bit more experience before you trip.
Dan
@@danmacmahon3973 the world is not that big as you think and if you want to be called a sportsman you should try to give give to the fishes equal Opportunities and leave some fishes for your children to eat. It is not our planet we are all passing through. JOHN NICK
1. If you freedive as well as bottle dive, then I don't mind.
2. Why do you not attach string to your gun?
3. Nice content, keep it up
4. My name is Bobcat (LoL)
Best, Dan
Dan MacMahon Gotcha thanks for the reply Dan
pesca con Garrafa !!! "Apnea"""""
DS, doesn't apnea mean holding your breath ? You're not supposed to hold your breath while Scuba Diving. Dan
Why not carry a dive knife to quickly dispatch the fish not killed instantly?
Kyle, I carry two kill knives. I do use one when the situation calls for it. Best, Dan
It all takes time , and it would also bloody up the water and maybe attract a shark over there . Most of his deeper dives he has maybe 3-4 minutes MAX on the bottom , and dispatching a wounded fish would easily use up another 30 seconds to a minute out of his 4 he has available .
You should try voiceover on one of the videos
Lucas, that sounds interesting. I'll look into how to do that. Thanks for the suggestion. Best, Dan
The real diver not use a scuba for fishing
SC, that's your opinion, I disagree. Thanks for watching. Dan

kenapa anda membunuh lionfish, ikan itu sangat indah dan bukan untuk di makan, seharusnya anda membiarkan ikan lionfish hidup.
You can eat lionfish and where he is hunting the lionfish is an invasive species.
Spear fishing with a bottle... Not the esence of spear fishing.
Xavi, commercial spear fishing 100 miles off shore in water way too deep for free diving. Keep an open mind brother. Dan
He is very selective. You would drop your line all day and drag up all sorts. At these depths, there is no catch and release. get a bit more experience before you trip.
Hello, can you tell me where is the merit of taking fish in diving tanks, it sucks.
LSM, permitted commercial spear fisherman working 100 or more miles off shore. Usually in 200' or deeper. Too deep for a snorkel. Best, Dan
@@danmacmahon3973 Hi Dan, so if it's golden, why not. I did not know that some countries allowed this type of fishing. Sorry.
Spearfishing with oxygen??? What a big deal! Try to dive without oxygen !
IL, lol, I've been snorkeling my whole life....thanks for watching, Dan
@@danmacmahon3973 Soo, now it's all alowed ? I enjoy fishing underwater. However, I don’t find it ethical, nor interesting, to put on oxygen. This is a massacre, not fishing.

SHAMEFUL TO SEE SO MANY VIEWS
Hey GC, it's a commercial spear fishing boat, you know commercial fishing where the object is to catch fish for others to eat. Shameful? You prefer nets or traps or longlines? Uselessly? All the fish are sold and eaten by people. Sounds pretty useful to me. What's truly shameful and useless is spewing garbage when you have no idea of what you're talking about. Dan
