I was working for Phillips66 Oil Co. in Rapid City SD in 1974 and Korczak Ziolkowski was using our fuel and lubricants in all his equipment . I spent a day with him on the mountain and the evening at his home. He drove me all over the area in his jeep and we drank whiskey in his living room. His wife Ruth brought it to us straight, in water glass tumblers!! (after a day with no meals....ugh!) He was a wonderful guy, full of enthusiasm and loving life and his gigantic project. He knew that he would not live to finish the sculpture , and he said so. He hoped that his family and foundation would complete it someday. However, nearby Rapid City is the location of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology , one of the premier hard rock mining engineering schools in the nation. I studied Civil Engineering there in the years following my visits with Korczak, and expert geophysical scientists and mining engineers at the school had determined that the Crazy Horse sculpture could never be completed because the rock the mountain is comprised of is not monolithic or uniform and could never support the type of sculpture that Ziolkowski envisioned. I can clearly see that coming true in this video made 50 years after I stood on the top of the mountain with Korczak. There's been very little change or progress in 50 years, and what has been done bears only a passing resemblance to the models and drawings Ziolkowski made originally. Too bad - His was a magnificent vision , but the raw material just was not then, and never will be there to make it real.

At the time construction started in 1948, the artist estimated the work would be complete in 30 years. As of 2022, there was no timeline for when the monument would be completed; however, the hand, arm, shoulder, hairline, and top of the horse's head were estimated to be finished by 2037.
On 3rd June 1948 Ziolkowski made the first blast and construction started. Since then work has been slow as Ziolkowski worked on the project mainly solo and refused to accept any government grants, thinking that if he did, he would no longer have complete control over the monument.
Should have had Michelangelo carve it.

It would be great if they finish it!!!!
But it will never get finished because the family has no plans on finishing it. The family is just collecting donations and they have a gift shop. That is how they are making money for themselves. None of the money is going towards finishing the crazy horse statue.
They set off dynamite ever so often just to make it seem that they are still working on the statue. It would take a rich person to purchase the project from the family and finish it.

    PHOTO OF CHIEF CRAZY HORSE
Reportedly, no image in photograph, painting or sketch was ever made of Chief Crazy Horse (c. 1840 - September 5, 1877) , son of Chief Crazy Horse and grandson of Chief Crazy Horse, Oglala Sioux chief and war leader.
[0:49] Image of a studio portrait of an American Indian with the caption: "1877 Chief Crazy Horse" with no credit of the source or provenance of the image. In 1877, Chief Crazy Horse would have been about 37 years old.

@@deepspire Well knowing the govt, if they did take fed monies, there would surely be audits and flow charts to monitor production. It would be the end of a cash cow.

This place is a tourist trap. I went there with my folks in the 1960's and they haven't gotten much further since then. It looks almost exactly the same as the 1960's. Great scam though. You blast some of the rock away and then wait for the tourist to come. Every once in a while, you blow up some more rock and people think you actually intend to finish it.

The government offered to finish it but had to many rules on how the money would be spend on the project and it was turned down ,I don’t blame them them they want to tell u what or how they want it ,no government control they want to be in charge 😂😂😂like if it is there’s,that why Mount Rushmore would not take money from the government ,they did it on donations?❤

Elon!! HELP!! The Lakota Sioux owned that land until they were forcibly removed to live on reservations. 🙏

The outstretched left arm makes this sculpture look silly and makes construction overly-complicated and slow. I believe that's why this project has barely progressed since I visited in 1990. If it were redesigned to have the left arm touching the torso and horse, it could be completed more easily.
