Not to sure if all the existing Native tribes agree with this work? Seems to me to be a bit Hollywood because of the Gen Custer Myths? America was once a vast Nation of 1000's of tribes that were over 300 years destroyed Doing service to but just one people rids the existence of all others Perhaps this work should have been more inclusive? No Nation is just one culture. Even tiny UK has 1000's of cultures to this very day.

At the time construction started in 1948, the artist estimated the work would be complete in 30 years. As of 2022, there was no timeline for when the monument would be completed; however, the hand, arm, shoulder, hairline, and top of the horse's head were estimated to be finished by 2037. On 3rd June 1948 Ziolkowski made the first blast and construction started. Since then work has been slow as Ziolkowski worked on the project mainly solo and refused to accept any government grants, thinking that if he did, he would no longer have complete control over the monument. Should have had Michelangelo carve it.

There are very few works of humans that I respect. This is one of them. Actually, at the moment, I can't even think of a 2nd one..... After minutes of thought, there is Dian Fossey understanding and protecting the mountain gorillas. I am not sure there is even a 3rd good thing humans have ever done. That is about the sum total value of humans. The bad things humans have done...that list is without end.

I was working for Phillips66 Oil Co. in Rapid City SD in 1974 and Korczak Ziolkowski was using our fuel and lubricants in all his equipment . I spent a day with him on the mountain and the evening at his home. He drove me all over the area in his jeep and we drank whiskey in his living room. His wife Ruth brought it to us straight, in water glass tumblers!! (after a day with no meals....ugh!) He was a wonderful guy, full of enthusiasm and loving life and his gigantic project. He knew that he would not live to finish the sculpture , and he said so. He hoped that his family and foundation would complete it someday. However, nearby Rapid City is the location of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology , one of the premier hard rock mining engineering schools in the nation. I studied Civil Engineering there in the years following my visits with Korczak, and expert geophysical scientists and mining engineers at the school had determined that the Crazy Horse sculpture could never be completed because the rock the mountain is comprised of is not monolithic or uniform and could never support the type of sculpture that Ziolkowski envisioned. I can clearly see that coming true in this video made 50 years after I stood on the top of the mountain with Korczak. There's been very little change or progress in 50 years, and what has been done bears only a passing resemblance to the models and drawings Ziolkowski made originally. Too bad - His was a magnificent vision , but the raw material just was not then, and never will be there to make it real.

Crazy Horse lies in an unmarked grave off his native land. To have a monument on ancient holy land of his people angers many of his family and his people. Mount Rushmore is even more of an insult to these people. The Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 has been trampled on. This land was promised to the Lakota and taken away by the federal government. The Lakotas, Cheyennes, Arapahos, Kiowas and Kiowa-Apaches believe the Black Hills to be sacred. The US Supreme Court ruled in 1980 that the Black Hills were stolen in and that the tribe should be given cash however the tribe wants it land. For those protesting for Palestinians or Israel; this is closer to home. This should be taken from the family making it, given to the tribe and smoothed over so it looks like the black hills again.

Its amazing that this and mt. Rushmore were started about the same time. These people won't accept a dime from the government that's why it's taken so long. When completed, the space under his arm will fit mt Rushmore. They say you'll be able to see this from outter space. Put it on your bucket list as a "Must See".
