So fortunate to have spoken with him at the WWII Memorial dedication. What an amazing man he was. Kind and soft spoken, but with such a commanding presence.
I saw him on Johnny Carson when he recited a poem about a favorite cow of his. Brought me to tears 😭 it was so tender and compassionate 💘 He was one of the great all around actors.
I met Jack Palance in 1979, when he shot an episode of 'Ripley's Believe it Or Not' at the US Army Corps of Engineers-Waterways Exerperiment Station-Environmental Research and Simulation Laboratory in Vicksburg, Mississippi where I worked. He sat under our one-of-a-kind rainfall simulator in a yellow raincoat and hat.
I will always remember Jack Palance hosting "Ripleys's believe it or not". He always added to the stories with his unique voice and flair. That was a fantastic show.
No one has mentioned Mr. Palance in the western movie - SHANE /1953 ... playing the bad guy real well, and the gun fight near the end, taking place in a saloon is one of the best, as is the movie ... with Alan Ladd, Van Heflin, Jean Arthur, and a young, but talented Brandon De Wilde.
That's right... and that's what made it real macho ... looking to the right at all the other videos I see an old Password show with Jack Palance & Lauren Bacall ... what a combo ... ruclips.net/video/-FdL1ITW11I/видео.html
At one time he was a heavyweight boxer under the name Jack Brazzo. During his career he had a run of 15 straight victories, 12 of which were by KO. He lost a close decision in 1940 to a rising young boxer who was eventually the #2 ranked heavyweight (Joe Baksi) who at some point lost a bout to Ezzard Charles. Had he won, Baksi would have fought Joe Louis for the heavyweight title. So that gives you an idea of Palance's athleticism.

I have read many biographies on Dorothy Kilgallen. This most brilliant journalist was said to be “ the woman who knew too much”regarding the Warren Commission final conclusion regarding the Kennedy assignation, was murdered to silence her from divulging her conclusions. Do the research!
Fred Allen's quip at 5:40, "Do you think the President is giving the country another Gettysburg address?" needs a bit of explanation. After retiring from the military, General Eisenhower bought a farm near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, about 1950; he had a heart attack during his first presidential term in September 1955 and spent some time at the farm recuperating after his six-week hospital stay was over, so his "address" was newsworthy at this time. "Giving the country" proved true after all: the Eisenhowers donated the farm to the National Park Service in 1967.
Neil Midkiff Thanks for that. I was just trying to dig for the information myself (as the reaction to Allen's ill-managed quip signified some sort of edginess to it). Couldn't find it so I resorted to scrolling down the comments which I do anyway. Have to say, now I know the background courtesy of you, Allen's pathetic gag is even more distasteful. Maybe you gotta just take my word for it as a long standing fan, this was not at all who Fred Allen was as a person, or what his comedy was like for that matter, at least when he was in control of his material and format (which he definitely wasn't on WML). If you read bios of him, it's astounding to read what everyone who knew him had to say about him as a *person*; he was a universally loved man (by all but network and ad agency executives), one who lived humbly and gave away huge, unknown portions of his income supporting countless strangers and ex vaudevillians down on their luck. He used to walk around with wads of bills in different denominations to give out to the regulars on his walks, to the extent that he would pay in advance if he knew he would be out of town for some reason, knowing that these folks depended on him that much. His radio comedy was notably aggressive for its time, very acidly satirical in particular towards radio and radio executives, but as a person, he was a pussycat. So maybe it's what I know about him outside the show, but when I hear Fred Allen say something inappropriate on WML-- which definitely happens, I certainly don't deny that-- I hear a guy who wasn't good at the game flailing around trying to be funny or at least to latch onto to any observation that would nudge him towards a relevant question. +Galileocan g I've read many comments on these videos about remarks that WML panelists made which would be considered very inappropriate these days. Having grown up during the 1950's and 60's, I can tell you that such remarks were not meant in a mean-spirited way and it was quite common for people (especially male buddies) to give as well as they took in that area. After all, very few of us don't have some feature that isn't picture perfect. (That's how caricaturists get their subject matter.) Among friends, if they knew someone was sensitive about it, they'd lay off. But being able to take a ribbing and give one back in good humor was considered a very positive trait in such circles. And it was the basis for comedians like Don Rickles: no group got singled out or skipped over, including the ones that were part of Rickles' identity.
Watching these in sequential order, I've noticed that's often the case. He's a very rude person. I can read fans talking about how wonderful he is, but just based on WML (and I don't know him from anywhere else), he comes across as so brusque and curt and insensitive. I know the times were different, but some of this is just dignity and common sense in public. I think he's rude. He also makes fun of people's gainful employment. Not cool.

This is so weird. I turned CC on since it's late and I don't want to turn the volume up but the subtitles are for an entirely different show. It's a poker game going on or something.
you have to go into settings and change it. I have no idea why it is an option. I watched a video of the Swedish chef from the muppets, they intentionally put in funny subtitles as an option. that made sense there, especially since you can't understand the Swedish chef, but here, it makes no sense.
Jack looks like he should have been Batman, that mask was made for his broad face with the prominent cheekbones, his hair is spiked up like the bat ears
Yes, I'm right. I'm watching this from episode 1 through in order, and at first I thought it was a fluke, but it's not. There's the same boisterous and blustering guy yelling in the audience as part of the routine, week after week, the same guy. I understand they're plants, to rile the audience up. But yeesh, this is really over the top.
I’d noticed the laugh too and you’re correct that it could be a plant. But having been to a number of TV tapings I’ve seen the warm up guys laugh enthusiastically to try to get the crowd going. It’s also possible that it’s a member of the stage crew since directors and producers are sometimes at stage level during the shows.
@@cuttersboi08It's my friend Jim Obrian we were teenagers, and would take the train 15 cents each for token, from Brooklyn and watch the show. The theater was built above the train staion very noisy. No fee, we sat in the middle of the audience and Jim would hoot and hollar. Attended 2 x a month 😅
Jack Palance plays a really good Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde. 1968. He is excellent as a vicious Southern gang leader during the Civil War in: The Desperadoes 1969, unfortunately the film was hacked to pieces, carelessly censored, and totally ruined, more than any other movie of the time or since, and no complete print seems to be available anywhere.
I dig young Palance's X-Men Wolverine style doo, very cool. He broke character a little talking to the light haired lady then the darker haired woman knew his voice, I think lol.
The Secret Service man has the most serious and executive look on his face. A no nonsense kinda look. Like "alright, let's get this over with so I can get back to work".
I think you're right, the volume level is unusually low. I'm sorry to say though I really can't fix this. With my current setup it would take me hours to first fix it and then upload the replacement video. I hope it's not a problem in other shows-- this hasn't come up before.
Yes, I do and I've had similar problems with the last couple (in sequence) prior to this. It's not horrible, but a little low. Certainly not so bad as to spend a lot of time fixing it. I'm was just glad to find out the problem isn't on my end.
Yes, it's true that the audio portion is so low as to be almost incomprehensible. However, in such situations, I always keep a set of earphones handy--such as the ones I'm using right now! (It makes a world of difference.)
In this 1955-1957 collection the last 3 or 4 have been quieter. If you have a video editor open the video, "normalize" the audio and then re-render the video.
Nope. I'm beginning to wonder if I'm the only one. I saw the comments about people complaining about the low volume, but everything sounds just fine on my end. How strange. . . As always, quite enjoyable.
My mom didn't like Jack Palance because he played such awful characters but then in the late 60's she saw him on a talk show. That day it was a theme show with 4 or 5 macho male actors. The host asked about their kids and one guy said "I don't have much to do with them until they get to be a year or two old because all they do before that is cry and fill up diapers and the others all agreed except for Palance. He said "You guys are really missing out on the best stuff in life, you hold them and cuddle them and coo at them and one day they look up at you and they smile, and they are smiling at you and it is the greatest thing in the world" My mom decided that Jack Palance was OK after all. I'd have to agree.
I just learned from the man himself that I've been pronouncing Jack Palance's name wrong all these years. I always thought it was PaLANCE. From now on, it will be PALance.
In my collection I have I DIED A 1000 TIMES (A good Remake of HIGH SEIRRA) & THE BIG KNIFE with Ida Lupino, Rod Steiger etc.) I recommend, SUDDEN FEAR with Joan Crawford, Gloria Graham etc. (Film Noir)
These shows started coming up in my recommended because I looked up Dorothy Killgalen in relation to JFK conspiracies. I had never heard of her. I’ve now watched a few of these and I knew who Tony Randall. I’ve never heard of most of the others, in the episodes I watched. I’ve never heard of Jack Palance. Interesting guy though. I love that everyone is dressed up. They seem extremely polite and well mannered. Of course this aired 68 years ago and my grandpa is not even 68 years old. To me this is ancient.
Palance mentions a film he did, "I Died A Thousand Times", a remake of the film "High Sierra". Palance played the role Bogart portrayed in "High Sierra".
Anna Kaminski I can see a band of orange, green and yellow or whatever it is appear on screen announcing something but I make a point of not reading it. I'm determined to not let them distract me!!
Bamberger's parade was in Newark, New Jersey, home of the flagship store of that retail chain. Macy's bought them out but kept the Bamberger's name at this time, then folded them into their own chain later. Hudson's parade was in Detroit and as far as I know is still going on under the name of America's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
The volume on this video is way too low. I do like the series, and have watched a number of episodes, but I had to dump this one, as the only way to hear it clearly would have been to cram the phone against my ear. I already had cancer once, and don't want brain cancer, so I never put the phone against my head. Sorry I can't watch this episode though. I like Jack Palance. I think that the first time I was allowed to stay up really late to watch a TV show, was for a Dracula movie, with Jack Palance doing an excellent job playing the blood sucking fiend. My father was watching it with me, but fell asleep on the sofa. My mother used to watch this show during chores when I was very young. I would often be hanging around while she did the chires, so I am familiar with a number of old shows she watched, and am now enjoying them decades later in my mid sixties, except for the soap operas. I've never liked soap operas. Real life is more than enough of a soap opera for me.
Due to the volume and missing some amusing banter between Mr. Baughmann and Mr. Daly, I turned CC (captions) on and imagine my surprise to see a conversation re: $2400 and $1500 are the subject matter. One of them is named Gabe. With a few other hints, I'm guessing it has something to do with gambling and cards! Hmm. Could this be the reason audio is so low? With my eyes I SEE WML, I see the text, they just don't fit together as crazy as it sounds, could two different shows be "supernaturally spliced" one over the other? Why yes! Yes, I DO hear the theme of Rod Serling's "The Twighlight Zone" running through my mind..
Obviously, the 1950's were far less "politically correct" than today (yet, conversely, certainly more mannerly and polite), but it's still a little jarring to hear Fred just come right out and tell the second contestant that he "looks heavy." Usually, the panelists would use polite euphemisms like "robust" or "healthy." Another example of Fred's alleged discomfort at being on the panel manifesting itself in what I'm assuming is unintentional rudeness. On a more pleasant note, Dorothy looks especially lovely tonight, with her black "wiggle" dress making her look unusually curvy.
+Todd Brandt Yeah, concerning DK : her dark locks and her earrings : channeling the va va voom girl of that moment , Gina Lollobrigida ....channeling her most successfully. How do I spell " wolf whistles " ????? rowrrrrr
+gcjerryusc I agree. Dorothy looked very attractive, as usual, but I think it would have been Arlene, whose figure was shown off perfectly by the cut of her gown, who would have been more likely to inspire plenty of "ooh la la" remarks by the guys. I know for certain that "Steve Morgan" would have whistled.
That City Slicker Took A Crap Bigger Than Billy Crystal, LOL ! I'll never forget his one armed pushup on the1992 Oscars. Jack Palance Was What Separated The Men From The Boys . 🌹
I'm not sure what the deal is but every program since about the beginning of Sep '55, the sound is barely audible. I've got my computer speakers on full blast and can barely hear the program.
My late wife recognized him at an airport many years ago. She asked him politely for an autograph and he shook his head no and waved her away with a sneer on his face. She thought he was very rude. He was just sitting there waiting.

Lovely to see Palance smile so much without a hint any menace for once. :)
I NEVER KNEW his real was Ukranian! Also I've pronounced his name incorrectly all my life!!
Never Alan Ladd and even more sadly, never Jean Arthur, although I am not surprised given how shy she was.
Elisha Cook Jr. Was the unfortunate sod buster trying to get a drink.
@@dcasper8514 Elisha was an awesome character actor. Was great in Bogey flicks, especially The Big Sleep. Should have been on WML, too, imo. Too bad Jack did him in.
I always liked jack palance.I watched Bronk, when new, and also his movie of Dracula, and Ripley's Believe it or Not.He created an LP, during the 1970's, and it can be had in CD form now.I can barely hear this.
He certainly was THE BEST Dracula EVER!!

This is so weird. I turned CC on since it's late and I don't want to turn the volume up but the subtitles are for an entirely different show. It's a poker game going on or something.
Same here!
Me, too
you have to go into settings and change it.
I have no idea why it is an option.
I watched a video of the Swedish chef from the muppets, they intentionally put in funny subtitles as an option.
that made sense there, especially since you can't understand the Swedish chef, but here, it makes no sense.
same thing happened to me
Pallance was cool - remember him from City Slickers
And the one handed push up at the Academy Awards
Loved his role in "City Slickers". He also played a great villain in "Shane".
He was also superb In " The Professionals "
Such a handsome , talented man. Love him.
Recently watched Jack In Shane - excellent acting
Great actor one of my favorites as a boy god bless him
Jack looks like he should have been Batman, that mask was made for his broad face with the prominent cheekbones, his hair is spiked up like the bat ears
Jack Palance plays a really good
Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde. 1968.
He is excellent as a vicious Southern gang leader during the Civil War in:
The Desperadoes 1969,
unfortunately the film was hacked to pieces, carelessly censored, and totally ruined, more than any other movie of the time or since, and no complete print seems to be available anywhere.
What an actor
On utube😊
Dorothy looks really wonderful on this episode.
The volume is barely existent, compared to other WML videos.

Bennett Cerf pronounced "Broadway" the same way that Susan Hayward did in "Valley of the Dolls". Broad-WAY.
Get back to work arranging the coup D’etat. JFK
Fred Allen was naturally hilarious!
Tell that to the younger generation that dislikes his dry wit😅
Dorothy looks very chic in basic black and the hoop earrings.
Lee Van Cliff and Jack Palance, my top "Bad Guys".
Jack was a great actor. Looks like he didn't have to change his hair-style (as seen here) much for his role as Dracula ! - LOL
I had to put my ear buds on. There is some captions going on during this show unrelated to this program.
same here
Edmund Baughman must be spinning in his grave over the problems with the Secret Service............
I wonder if the SS still deals with counterfit money?
@@libertyann439 Yes, it does.
I can hardly hear this show. Does anyone else have a problem with this specific show?
I never really liked Jack Palance before, but after seeing him on this, I see Jack in a totally different light.
Volodymyr Pahlaniuk (Ukrainian) was the original name of Jack Palance.
He said "You guys are really missing out on the best stuff in life, you hold them and cuddle them and coo at them and one day they look up at you and they smile, and they are smiling at you and it is the greatest thing in the world"
My mom decided that Jack Palance was OK after all. I'd have to agree.
Jack Palance looks like Count Chocula
I just learned from the man himself that I've been pronouncing Jack Palance's name wrong all these years. I always thought it was PaLANCE. From now on, it will be PALance.
In my collection I have I DIED A 1000 TIMES (A good Remake of HIGH SEIRRA) & THE BIG KNIFE with Ida Lupino, Rod Steiger etc.) I recommend, SUDDEN FEAR with Joan Crawford, Gloria Graham etc. (Film Noir)
All can be watched on utube😊
22:56 another name Cerf couldn't pronounce. It's Engelke, he calls her Engelcake.. 😂
That movie died considerably more than a thousand times.....
Such clever quips!
The GSN captions are sooooo distracting! Damn!
Anna Kaminski I can see a band of orange, green and yellow or whatever it is appear on screen announcing something but I make a point of not reading it. I'm determined to not let them distract me!!
Be thankful we can enjoy these precious memories 😊
Please fix the sound on this video. Had my volume cranked up to max, and could barely understand what they were saying. Furthermore, I'm not deaf.

Check out “I died a thousand times”… A remake of Bogart‘s “High Sierra”
That particular movie died considerably more than a thousand times.
I've only seen him in City Slickers.
There used to be 3 Thanksgiving parades? On the same day? Must have really tied up traffic! I guess they loved their parades back then.
Being it was a holiday very few people were going to work😊
jack palance is a tough cookie.
Jack played Carl Grissom in Batman (1989) and Lord Rothbart in The Swan Princess.
Jack Palance like Steve McQueen exudes raw sexuality!
Volume is to low on here and some others .
Jack, nice hair
🤣

I think my favorite Palance movie was 'ATTACK!'
This video was posted 10 years ago and STILL has the wrong closed caption, which has been mentioned in previous posts.
Back before they called it Animal Control
Todd Brandt True Todd, but you gotta admit that Fred's aside "he come to them...if it's downhill" is hilarious
+Todd Brandt Yeah, concerning DK : her dark locks and her earrings : channeling the va va voom girl of that moment , Gina Lollobrigida ....channeling her most successfully. How do I spell " wolf whistles " ????? rowrrrrr
+gcjerryusc
I agree.
I think Dorothy looks very chic here.
But he doesn’t look healthy, he’s fat. We could use some more of that honesty in 2022
Jack Palance is a good looking man.
Strange looking to me, Count Dracula
Jack Palance!!
The Hollywood satire mentioned in the Jack Palance segment must be "The Big Knife" (1955), www.imdb.com/title/tt0047880/
Has anybody pressed subtitles on this? High stake poker game going on lol
That's really funny and strange! Wonder where those captions came from.
R.D. Dragon RUclips auto-generates them. But this time I think there was a bug in their software.
@@alskndlaskndal Game Show Network, they have their programs mixed up.
Jack Palance's hair😳
Count Dracula
That City Slicker Took A Crap Bigger Than Billy Crystal, LOL !
I'll never forget his one armed pushup on the1992 Oscars. Jack Palance Was What Separated The Men From The Boys . 🌹
Ho! Ho! Bennett admitted he was arrested for speeding!
I'm not sure what the deal is but every program since about the beginning of Sep '55, the sound is barely audible. I've got my computer speakers on full blast and can barely hear the program.
Use close caption 😊
Can't understand why there is no modern version of this classic TV show, I'm sure it would be a hit again
Not without the same cast
Everyone has such nice cursive
Cursive was required 70 years ago 😊
Jack Palance in Batman 1989 with Jack Nicholson
Hardly clever to have the Chief of the U.S. Secret Service on a TV game show
Jack was a professional boxer in the 1930’s!
My late wife recognized him at an airport many years ago. She asked him politely for an autograph and he shook his head no and waved her away with a sneer on his face. She thought he was very rude. He was just sitting there waiting.
It gets extremely exhausting to be pestered by hundreds of😢 fans for a autograph
Jack Palance reminds me of Norm Macdonald
Really? There is only one Jack Palance. And too many Norm McDonald's.
I can see the resemblance.
Can't see the resemblance..
No
I see it
Fred Allen sounds exactly like Humphrey Bogart. Sad the volume is so low.
Is it just my imagination or is the CC for this episode from one of GSN poker games?
Hmmm, Jack Palance was Ukrainian and Charles Bronson was Russian, but they learned to speak English well.
My grandma looks like Jack Palance.
Looks are deceiving. Can she do push-ups?
😂
Why does Arlene come out with her purse?
It was acceptable to have a purse, woman carried makeup, lipstick, cigarette, lighter😊
