- Housed at the Hotel Harrington, (11th & E Sts, NW), Washington DC's first TV station, W3XWT, took the air in 1945 under the guidance of Dr. Thomas T. Goldsmith, Jr. of Du Mont Labs.
This clip was taken from the production entitled "Forty Years Together - Channel 5 and You" which aired May 20, 1985. (C) Metromedia Radio & Television, Inc. 1985
It eventually became WTTG (named for Goldsmith, who died in March 1999 at the age of 99!)
Thomas Toliver Goldsmith, Jr. lived from January 9, 1910 - March 5, 2009.
Lovely video clip .
I MEANT to type in "2009", 'Eye', but it was too late to post a correction!!!
:(
This was from a 50th anniversary special about WTTG Channel 5 in Washington, D.C.
That detail is disclosed in the RUclips full description. Click on SHOW MORE. "Forty Years Together - Channel 5 and You" aired May 20, 1985. (C) Metromedia Radio & Television, Inc. 1985
EyeLikeTooWatch I stand corrected. Maury was supposed to leave Channel 5 to go to New York only for a few months to do A Current Affair which was slated to be a summer replacement series then return to DC and do the 10 o clock news again. The show became a success and launched Maury Povich's career on a National level.
If only he got Watergate guys before the lie detector:
"President Nixon...You DID launch the cover-up!".
