My big cousin was always my favorite, of all my cousins. He was my big big cousin at the family parties - I'd go looking just for him. Because he was so sweet, so gentle, and so kind hearted to everyone - and, it was so nice for a little kid like me. He started getting schizophrenia. But, he was so handsome, young, intelligent, well composed. He sang this at his high-school in front of the auditorium, with an entire choir behind him as the lead singer. His performance was so good... After many many things. Tragic and sad. I hadn't seen him in so many years. Not at the family parties, not on social media. Nowhere. Yesterday, he came to our house. My uncle sought and found him at a assisted living facility. He was doing well - mentally. Still so sweet!!! With an amputated prosthetic leg from being hit and run on the street, with front teeth missing from being punched in the face while homeless, after hard drug addiction, and having a baby girl who was taken away from him. My cousin is still my gentle giant! And, we were reminiscing over the times as kids. My mom and aunt reminded him of his performance of this song in high school. And, he said he could do it even better now. So, we put this exact video on, and he sang it for us. -my first time hearing it. But, soooo meaningful. Because I thought I would never see him again and the words mean so much, relating to him. And, I put it on my Worship Playlist, now. And, the words also remind me of what Jesus might sing to us, too. God bless you, whoever read this whole thing.
“ If This Were A Love Song About Jesus” ….Was exactly what i was thinking when listening after many many years of forgotten memories related to this song. Mine are completely different from yours( Marriage) but i can sing this now and relate it to the Most High Jesus giving His life for me. Undeserving but made righteous by HIS Blood sacrifice and Resurrection. He makes all things new. Thank you for sharing

I must admit, that line confused me a bit too. And I believe the songwriter(s) did it on purpose in order to give us listeners some room to interpret. I see it a bit differently and not as a contradiction. I rather interpret it as a song of connecting to empathy seemingly too late. He is finally feeling the things his partner once felt. So when he says is it my turn to watch you walk out of my life and not do a damn thing, I presume that it was he that once walked out of his partner’s life uncaringly as that partner fought for their relationship without reciprocity. He is now feeling a great sense of regret, loss and longing - willing to do and feel the things his partner once did.
