He told me there are far too many nobodies wandering about waving flags who were just riding on the backs of the poor sods who never came home.
When he died some years ago I was lucky in getting his last wish granted after being pointed in the right direction by an ex CPO I worked with ,
I got his ashes buried at sea by Portsmouth RN from under the White Ensign .
I still lay a wreath on his behalf the day after commemoration day and as for wearing a relatives medals on the right side I would never ever do that , only those who earn them are entitled to wear them .

A few years ago as a young copper my wife and I settled down to watch Silence of the Lambs, first time it had been on TV. About 15 mins in there was a knock at the door, stocky little guy in a sheepskin coat, Bentley ticking over just behind him. He said that he was looking for an old friend who used to live in the area. I said that I didn't know the name. He then said that he was arranging a big party because he had come into a lot of money and was emigrating. He went on to say that he was in the SAS, was involved in the embassy siege and had to leave the country for a little while afterwards because it was "on top". What a wanker. As he drove off I took the registration number of the car, one number and two letters. I went into work the following day and PNC checked it. I rang the owner, the CEO of a large company. I told him my story. "That's my chauffeur" he said "he dropped me off at the Metropol Hotel in Solihull and had about three hours to kill." He was in the catering corps. He assured me that he would have strong words with the guy. I said "Tell him that the young copper from Solihull isn't as big a twat as he clearly looks."
