I ended up sawing through the pins of mine using a thin hand saw with fine teeth, which is an inelegant solution, not to mention messy and hazardous for the board, but de-soldering is such a pain that I considered it the better option. I did need to get new standard header pins though. I suppose one could also do it with a second person pulling out the pins one by one with a pair of pliers or tweezers as you heat the top+bottom of each pin using 2 soldering irons. In hindsight maybe I should have done it that way. Although that approach has other problems, and the header pins would still need to be replaced
I would be interested in seeing a desoldering gun and/or hot air rework station used for this. I got each after a bad experience desoldering things like an Elite-C or SMD LEDs in the past, but I am still struggling just as much now trying to remove a Pi Pico from a board. The desoldering gun removes basically all the visible solder, but it's still stuck. The hot air just isn't working well for some reason (although I'm still new to using hot air). In my case I'm actually trying to remove the pin headers from the board first, my end goal being putting the Pico back on the board without the pin headers, so that some pads by the USB port can make contact that otherwise wouldn't.

Is this doable with a solder wick instead of the pump?
