I cannot tell you how many videos I've been through trying to understand time signatures! You explain it so perfectly, the clapping and discussion of emphasis really really helped! Thank you sooooo much! I finally understand the basics. :)
I just started playing piano again after 18 years. I've forgotten everything about time signatures and counting notes. Your teaching is incredible. Thank you!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I JUST STARTED LEARNING THESE THINGS (includeing reading musical notes) LIKE A COUPLE OF DAYS BACK AND THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS CONFUSED ABOUT AND LOOKING A CLEAR EXPLANATION FOR!! I am not even learning the piano, I was just getting to know how rhythm, melody, stresses in beats etc work in music. I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH! YOU JUST SAVED ME A WHOLE LOT OF TIME AND THE PAIN OF GETTING LOST AND MAKING MISTAKES AGAIN AND AGAIN. I JUST GOTT SAY I LOVE YOU FOR THIS AND HERE YOU GO, HAVE A VIRTUAL HUG MAYBE!!!
Thank you for sharing this wonderful explanation and method for visualizing time signatures. Your combination of diagrams, clear verbal explanation, and clapping made this click in a very satisfying way. I particularly appreciated your emphasis on details like "four quarter notes fill up a measure, or what's equal TO four quarter notes." That helped a lot.
I've been playing piano for 5 years and have never understood this (I just played what I heard). Thank you very much! Edit: After watching this video it's life my mind finally opened, it all makes sense now, thank you!!!!
Another awesome lesson. I am going to take all of your courses once the financial situation changes. I have played guitar for 40 years and I took lessons on piano when I was 10 so a lot of the stuff is familiar to me. I just want to focus on productive learning and practice. I'm looking forward to studying more with you. Thank you for uploading.
You said that you were not born to be an artist...? Don't be so modest. Yet! i believe that you do have all the necessary required skills, in order to explain and teach music, in a most prolific way, which actually makes you a great master in the true art of teaching. Lol!❤ Thank you! for helping me understand and demystify the whole entire concept of being able to read time signatures, on a basic music sheet. Johnny, from Montreal, Canada 🇨🇦
This is not you but me. You explained that brilliantly. It’s just my brain still doesn’t get it but my dyslexia plays a part in that. I didn’t get it during piano lessons as a child either. I get someone else to play it then I know how it goes and copy it 👍🏼
having had 10 hours on simply piano watching your videos clear up a lot, this section especially more than others. very appreciative, thank you kindly from England ✌️🙂
I'm so thankful for your videos! I have a hard time learning time signatures and theory in general at college, but with you seems so easy to understand.
Brilliant. I got a Roland FP 30x last year at Christmas. I've tried learning on my own and can read notes. I'm trying to learn a few Christmas songs for my 1 year anniversary. My playing is so choppy. I realize in part it's because I never understood rhythm and time signatures. It seemed advanced until I watched your videos. Hopefully this will help my playing sound more natural. Thank you. It would be great to offer laminated posters on time signatures and rhythm. Best videos on RUclips! Please do a video on how to set metronome to match songs time signatures.
As a beginner , i like 6/8 signature , I especially like your tutorial for Perfect by Ed Sheran which has this signature 😀. Thank you for your very informative tutorials. ❤️
Oh thank you so much...40 years I have been trying to understand time signatures!! So top number is how many beats...bottom number the type of note and how many of them go in the bar?
Yup! You got it! If you think of it like a pie, and you cut the pie into 4 pieces. Each beat is a piece of the pie and the measure is the pie plate, the structure that holds the pie. :)
Thanks lisa ,this video helped me a lot. I am a beginner that doesn't know where to start and I don't always have data but when I do, i make the most of it. I watched a lot of ur videos and the really helped, but do u have a video that lets us know what all we have to know everything in music theory
can you please make a video on how to read the key signatures? you explain it very well. I will very grateful to you if you make a video on key signatures.
oh thank you Madame Witt ! With the help of your cheerful vivid style I'm finally recalling back my decades old blurry memories into sharper focus that I had to avoid due to my laziness before... thank you so much. My favorite is all music ;-)
In Turkey we like 2 more different time signatures: 9/8 which is known as the Roman/Gypsy Dance Music Rhythm and very lovely & moving melodies have this time signature 7/8 is the rhythm used in the folkloric dances in Blacksea Region
I'd like to see and hear each of these concepts demonstrated on the piano, not with clapping hands. What does 4/4/ time sound like on the piano, what does 6/8 and 4/4 and all the rest sound like on the PIANO?
thank you for this video i do have a doubt which is disturbing me since few days 3/5 3/7 3/9 5/3 5/7 5/9 7/3 7/5 7/9 9/3 9/5 9/7 do these exist, if yes kindly help understand that concept as well
Struggling to understand the 6/8 time signature, confused that quarter notes can fit in an 8th note space. Also the dot after quarter note makes it 1 1/2 beats, not sure how they can fit in the spaces. I expected rapid clapping for each of the spaces… I think I understood all the previous time signatures, probably have to watch 100 times before sinks in? Could do with several slow examples I guess,
5:31 why that note count as 1,2,3 I thought it would be 1 and a half beat. (Idk if you understand this question but on 2/4 the 2nd and 3rd note is count as 1 but not 2.)
Do you mean the number at the bottom of each time signature? That tell us what TYPE of note represents one "beat". So in 4/4 the BOTTOM 4 tells us that quarter notes = 1 beat, and the top 4 tells us that there are 4 beats in each measure. 3/4 means that quarter notes still = 1 beat (because the 4 is at the bottom), but this time there are only 3 of them in each measure.
For playing, singing, reading I like the basic ones? 4/4 and 3/4 because I'm not a super advanced music reader but I like strange time signatures for listening...I love that up in the air feeling when the meter gets mixed up. Most common example is Money by Pink Floyd. I think its in 7/4 time. There are some excellent 6/8 rock tunes too. Rock drummers love 6/8. I also love that sensation of triplets. (3 beats in the span of 2) it usually sounds very emphatic. Can someone please explain cut time? I never could grasp it. My band directors would just say read it like 4/4 but play it faster. 😨 Its an explanation that never sat well with me.
Hi I am a beginner, I have a question relating to Time Signature. If I see a video with only written letters (ie, E,F,D etc) with no music sheet, how does a person determine which Time Signature to write the music sheet. Which thing decides this and why?
Why do we need to know the number of beats if the note already shows the length. If we didn’t have the number of beats written, we would still be able to play the song the same way. Could you please explain the importance of it?
Not quite, but close! A beat is the basic unit of musical time. It tells how fast the music is (it's like the beating of a heart -- or what you tap your foot to). So in 4/4 time, there are 4 beats in a measure, and each beat is a quarter note. A whole note is 4 beats -- but instead of playing it 4 times we would play it once and HOLD it down for 4 beats. So we play it for the WHOLE 4 beats (that's where the name is from). A quarter note is one beat. So we would play that 4 times in a measure. A half note is two beats, so we would play it twice in a measure. I hope that helps!
“It’s not as overwhelming and complicated as it might seem”.....
me completely overwhelmed
I think that's normal.
I cannot tell you how many videos I've been through trying to understand time signatures! You explain it so perfectly, the clapping and discussion of emphasis really really helped! Thank you sooooo much! I finally understand the basics. :)
That makes me so happy! Thank you so much Kalila :)
Yes she always does a great job at breaking it down.
agreed !!. but can someone explain about strong weak concept !

Thank you, this lesson was so helpful. 3/4 and 4/4 are most comfortable for me as a beginner.

Nice one... Lisa you are innocent you are very nice👍
My favorite time signature is 6/8
I'm a beginner, started about one month ago. I go every week to 30 minute sessions.
Struggling to understand the 6/8 time signature, confused that quarter notes can fit in an 8th note space. Also the dot after quarter note makes it 1 1/2 beats, not sure how they can fit in the spaces.
I expected rapid clapping for each of the spaces…

Thank you very much for your videos!!! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
SHIVAM it is really helpful
i was clapping out loud to count beats in the middle of the night and woke my mom
Nathi Mabena my sleep paralysis demon told me to keep it down
can I use word "bar" instead measure?
Rumbling was about to start at the end
3:02 and 6:23 in terms of clapping, may i know the differences? 😅🙏
That's what I call kinder garden pen grip....btw...great lesson..tx :)
Very helpful, clear explanation. I was looking for 6/8 signature explanation and finally found it here :)
5:31 why that note count as 1,2,3 I thought it would be 1 and a half beat. (Idk if you understand this question but on 2/4 the 2nd and 3rd note is count as 1 but not 2.)
Ur AMAZING!!! Thank you but im still a bit confused for the time signature bellow, can somebody help me?
Do you mean the number at the bottom of each time signature? That tell us what TYPE of note represents one "beat". So in 4/4 the BOTTOM 4 tells us that quarter notes = 1 beat, and the top 4 tells us that there are 4 beats in each measure.
3/4 means that quarter notes still = 1 beat (because the 4 is at the bottom), but this time there are only 3 of them in each measure.
Pianote ur literally amazing! Thank u
Madam, please can I get notations on "Come September" song, if possible.
For playing, singing, reading I like the basic ones? 4/4 and 3/4 because I'm not a super advanced music reader but I like strange time signatures for listening...I love that up in the air feeling when the meter gets mixed up. Hi I am a beginner, I have a question relating to Time Signature.
If I see a video with only written letters (ie, E,F,D etc) with no music sheet, how does a person determine which Time Signature to write the music sheet. Which thing decides this and why?
Wait so is this just math. Add fractions (1/4 + 1/2 + 1/8 + 1/8)
Allthough I don't understand strong beat, medium beat and low beat what does all of that mean?
Its very clear and comprehensive, but I have a question
Why do we need to know the number of beats if the note already shows the length. If we didn’t have the number of beats written, we would still be able to play the song the same way. Could you please explain the importance of it?
Does beats mean how many times you press the chord?
Like for example a whole note is 4 beats, so it means to press the chord 4 times?
Not quite, but close! A beat is the basic unit of musical time. It tells how fast the music is (it's like the beating of a heart -- or what you tap your foot to).
So in 4/4 time, there are 4 beats in a measure, and each beat is a quarter note.

A quarter note is one beat. So we would play that 4 times in a measure. A half note is two beats, so we would play it twice in a measure. I hope that helps!
I wish you would apply some examples on a keyboard so you can drive your point home.
