Interesting times! I am a septuagenarian and boy oh boy is it good to see dots connected now that information and history is at our fingertips! Makes the cherry picking easier to understand how it brenched out.
If you have lived, not vacationed: worked, met native people, understand a bit of their culture, in Asia, and you have a critical mind, you will notice "spirituality" is nothing like it is "sold" to us here as westerners. I laugh everytime people uses "namaste" because I know from my Indian friends it is just a salutation, no "spirituality" attached to it. People from the East are people too, just like us westerners, with virtue or corruption, or just something in between. Human beings.
This 1 hour podcast replay is.....one of the best examples of an author or journalist presenting his ideas and arguments in a riveting and convincing way. While I came to this material knowing a great deal of it already, I've never heard this sensitive history presented like this all at once from a fair and honest point of view. I will be buying your book and listening to more podcasts. Thank you for your courage and candor as a "storyteller."
Definitely worth a 2nd listen. I think this is really important info! It's that thing you somehow just 'know' but can't put your finger on it, much less explain it. It feels so faded and fragmented .... unless you're Scott Carney.
Thank you for investigating, analyzing and covering these things so well! Mix them up, juxtapose them, turn them inside-out, rip them apart and put them back together again - so we can see it all! Came to your channel from Andrew Gold. So glad to find you.
Your recent content has been really intriguing (maybe the non-recent stuff was intruguing too, but I'm late to the party . . . ). Anyway, I ordered a copy of "The Enlightenment Trap" and am looking forward to reading it.
Wow, this was a fascinating and insightful monologue. Being born in a Hindu family, we always joke about how the average Westerner is more concerned about balancing their chakras than the average Hindu. ..... I guess the zeal of new discoverers always floats to the top (or over the top). For religions that value societal engineering and rules, like Islam, we often see new converts become extremists. So I guess the equivalent with Eastern religions would be a painful and deep nihilism.
There is a saying about the zeal of a convert that's worth thinking about. Westerners look East for spiritual teachings because they understand the problems with their own traditions. They don't understand that all parts of the world have history. And it goes the other direction, too.
People in Tibet were enslaved by the Lamas..They were cruel to their people. It was nothong like the movie 7 yeara in Tibet.. The lamas are groomed by their midevil religion. If U really new what happens in those monasteries U would never join it.

Great content. I have also been to India ( another westerner looking for enlightenment 😂) saw the ugly fanatism of religion there. Has this suicide happenned at the Root Institute? This was the craziest place I have been (volunteered at reception for 3 months). I'm trying to find the story mentioned at the beginning about early Buddhism where monks commit suicide after doing the grave yard meditation. Can't find it. What is the sutta name? Anyone? Charnel ground meditation is recommend throughout the Pali cannon and this is the first time I'm hearing this story. If the story was true, one would expect this meditation to be cancelled but it is clearly recommended on so many suttas, I doubt that story is authentic.
This was excellent and so important. Just as much as white supremacy needs to die, so does this naive, contextless dangerous thinking. Both are lethal. May we move beyond our current framings and systems.

I find it fascinating that you repeatedly state that Dolpopa was the founder of mind only Buddhism, when anybody who does even a little bit of studying realizes that mind only Buddhism, also known as Yogacara Buddhism, was founded (in India) 500 to 600 years before Dolpopa (a Tibetan) existed.
