I recall that “Drones are Drones” statement by CIG like you mention here having choice of drones you bring along. Not being suddenly any ship can become any role... just the drones.
I think regarding drones you are right about them not being in until docking, I have a Vulcan and the general idea I have with it is 3 utility drones(repair, rearm, refuel) and one of the mine drones so if I need to enter a mined area to retrieve or repair a target in distress I will be able to access them through the minefield without having to call a clearing ship

Drones are evolving in amazing ways. The US Navys X-47B UCAV is probably as advanced and sophisticated as they come. It proved it can repeatedly take off and land like an carrier aircraft, has a bomb bay and is stealthy. It too is a fairly large aircraft.

As a Nautilus owner, I'm really looking forward to seeing how useful the NEMO drone will be, the idea of disarming other minefields then resupplying my own through these disarmed mines is cool.
I think drones are an often overlooked feature and hopefully will have great utility & have interesting gameplay. I'm looking to use ships that can carry various drones like the Nautilus, Carrack & Vulcan.
Definitely looking forward to the drones. I made a suggestion a few months back that the first drone CIG should roll out should be the camera drone they showed off in CitCon a few years back. Nail down the controls, get better camera controls for free (as opposed to having to hold down F4 and having three other hands), and so on. Then start building up to the drones that do more complicated things.
Man, great video! Drone development has been moved to the vehicle team now and all the base building and drone sizes have been planned/scaled (CitizenCon 2954) so let's hope we get to see these ships finished/developed soon! o7
Early backers got a repair drone as a stretch goal. 2013 I think. Anywho drone gameplay is really exciting. Behind docking a d launching docked ships, it's my most anticipated feature.
Hmm, a Vulcan using refueling drones to refuel a Nautilus? I wonder how well that's going to work given the size differences involved. Hopefully they get a Starfarer en route soon. And there's a ship that could use a redesign with drones in mind too. I mean if a Starfarer responds to a distress call from an Aurora, is it really going spend ten years getting itself into position with that boom? It would be so much simpler to get in range and send a drone.
Drone gameplay should be like homeworld RTS, drones auto harvest relevant asteroids and shipwreck salvage, not to mention drones for RECON, for larger exploration ships to scout out and cartography data, then Drones repair refuel repair. i mean i'd love to see RTS gameplay, get cartography data and combat data to allow capital ships to command large fleets in battles
I'm not sure how you keep doing it, but your production value is exponentially increasing with each new video. As someone extremely focused on player-to-player repair gameplay, this video was absolutely wonderful. Please keep doing what you're doing, don't change a thing.
Fuel rats ... too soon! Nice video , I think this adds deep in the game . But the developers need to add the deepness of space for have the use for it.
Drones are gonna be a really cool part of the game, itll be interesting to see how they let us go with modular design and customization of the drones abilities and components.
Landed on this channel by accident. I love how calm and smart this guesses and ideas are, love the clear presentation style. Activated the bell. Looking forward for the next video.
I'm not avionics tech or anything, but I imagine doing external repairs on a vehicle the size of the carrack without a proper dry-dock would be quite dangerous, whether landed or in zero G. So having a number of repair drones sounds pretty useful to have for a ship designed to be out in space for long periods of time. And since neither the carrack nor the piecies (or any other ship that can fit in the hangar bay afaik) has a utility mount for a tractor beam, a salvage drone would be very useful for collecting samples from dangerous locations.
Really looking forward to drones being implemented with repair/salvage and refuel. Just traded in my MSR for a Vulcan and I already have a Vulture as well so both ships will benefit from it!
I believe the Hercules Starlifter should be able to have drone bay, allowing it to carry big amounts of drones to maybe stock up drone reserves for other ships or to maybe control them to carry out small tasks with them.
Great, informative video brother. I hadn't paid much attention to drones so I didn't know any of this until I saw this video. Keep up the good work! SFMF
I actually would love to run a nautilus as a 'firefighting medic', something to actively repair a light multicrew ship or fighter while actively engaging enemies.
It may seem odd, but I hope drones can be complementary to going outside your ship. For example, if you're rescuing wounded people in a cave, a Red would require you to go spelunking, while an Apollo could simply send its drones - though I hope there's still a reason to go down with the drone, if only to shepherd it along through impasses.
Cool to think about this stuff. I'm personally looking forward to the small indoor drones. Picture ghost recon type. Small information gathering. Hopefully able to fly into caves or derelict ships. Good video.
Hoping drones are modular or flexible enough to allow them to act as a way for changing the role of a ship slightly. For example, if I have a Carrack, it would be nice if I could outfit it with mining drones and go mining, or salvage drones and do some of that.. or repairs. Sure it won't be that efficient at it, but good enough to do the job. This opens up a new potential class of ship, one that focuses on flexibility by being a sort of drone carrier. Not sure this is the direction they'll go, but I think it could be neat.
Awesome video! Take your sub and like, and thank you for your time in the service! On topic: I'm really hoping the Carrack can use drones to retrieve or deploy a cargo container (possibly a container loaded with mining tools and a small hab for a player to establish a small mining hub/outpost). Or as a means to shuttle cargo from a resupply ship (food, water, munitions, etc for an ongoing expedition) into one of the open cargo bays.
That was a great video, I appreciate your thoroughness and eye to detail. The video quality and production value where also excellent. Ive subbed for more so please keep up the good work. Cheers Aj
From a purely mechanical point of view, Salvage and repair are actually very similar, just with their effects reversed; Salvaging removing points from a physicalised object/hull, repair simply adding those points back on. The differences from a back-end perspective are flavor. I wouldn't be surprised to see repair mechanics following closely behind or even alongside salvaging , even if the dedicated repair ships arn't yet in game.
Well hopefully they have the same team working on both mechanisms because implementation for the two could be widely different too there's so many possible angles they could start from with these
Awesome in-depth video! Docking seems to be the main blocker, and once we get it, it does seem like the floodgates will open with all kinds of new gameplay features. Really looking forward to sending an exploration drone deep in the wreckage of an alien derelict!
