Freeze Dried Wild Plums -- From Tree to Long Term Food Storage

  • We have several wild plum trees at our property that produce hundreds of pounds of wild plums. If you pick them at the right time, they are sweet and delicious. The main problems with the plums is they are small and have a seed and are difficult to process. They also don't store for a very long time. I am a frugal guy, especially when it comes to food. I hate to see all those plums laying on the ground and just going to waste, so I have decided to freeze dry some. I am hoping that freeze drying will separate the seed from the fruit and give us a healthy snack year round.

    We have wild plum trees everywhere on our place. Just made 35 half pint jars of the best jelly. Tomorrow will be making at least that much or more. Will have to try this in my new freeze dryer as soon as the "freeze dryer room" is set up. Thanks for a new idea to preserve this wonderful fruit right from my backyard!

    My first thought was that those wild plums look a lot like the ones my Mom and I used to pick when I was growing up (in Georgia). Momma called them wild plums, too and a friend called them Chickasaw plums. We used to process them into jam/jelly using an old method. I don't know what the contraption was called, but it looked like a large, cone-shaped metal colander on a stand with legs (so a bowl fit under it) and a wooden piece that looked like an elongated pestle. We'd par boil those wild plums to get the skins to crack, then put them in that colander thing and squish the pulp and juice out of them using a stiring motion with that wooden tool. All the skins and seeds would stay in the colander, so what ended up in the bowl became the pulp used for the jam. We used the same thing for Muscadines.

    They make a pitter for cherries/ olives that would probably work just fine on those

      I was thinking that also.

      @@HebronGrandpa plus the hole thru the center would probably help the drying

    I use a cherry pitter on my plums that are the same size. I remove the foam inserts and the pits pop through just fine. They freeze dry beautifully. I like to powder mine and use them in smoothies to add tartness.

    I miss your longer videos - seems like they’re all so short since you moved into the new kitchen. I love your enthusiasm and guidance and have referred friends to your channel. Those are reallllly small plums - are the seeds/pits ok to consume? With them still being in the FD product it’s a consideration since I have older and younger family members; so will want to be sure. THANKS!

      Pits and seeds tend to have arsenic in them so I wouldn't recommend? My video last week was 25 minutes long!

    It would be fantastic if you could do a comparison of the Harvest Right freeze dryer vs. the Stay Fresh freeze dryer. I know its not just a simple thing to do though... someone is gonna be out $2700

    Off topic question. Can you freeze dry hamburger, then add it to, say hamburger helper, then re-freeze dry it??

    • @live.life.simple.
      @live.life.simple.  Год назад +1

      Yes. I would suggest cooking, then draining, possibly rinsing off grease and then paper towel

    • @kayemoore
      @kayemoore Год назад +1

      Yes you can and if you have a freeze dryer “should”. However be sure to watch other videos or go to Brian’s MeWe page for directions on RINSING the hamburger before freeze drying cuz remember the grease/fat can’t be freeze dried well and goes rancid easily/quickly. Happy FDing!
