Nice turntable! Thanks for all the advice you give along the way. As you say, it suffered some neglect, but is in pretty good cosmetic condition for being 40 + years old. It certainly puts the modern TT's to shame.

I have a Garrard changer that is part of a KLH player with just an amp in it. I like to use automotive degreaser on things that are really gummed up, as long as it isn't plastic. That worked great for most of the problems but one function on this turntable simply would not free up no matter what I did. In desperation I finally tried some heavy duty silicone spray and it actually worked! I was so happy. I wasn't as lucky as you were with the idler. I had to send my idler tire out to be redone. It now works as it should. I also have a Perpetuum Ebner German turn table and the stacker on that works similar to yours. It is much older and it has three fiction pads that come out to hold the records while three flat blades lower and then drop the record to the turntable. Sadly, the friction material has died. Not sure how that can be fixed or even if it can be.
Just finished my Dual 2018, but I would have saved time if I had watched this first. My start stop mechanism was gummed up. This video did a great job of describing the functions of all those cams and levers. This mechanism reminds me of a Rube Goldberg device and is operation is not very obvious.
Some were grounded through the RCA cables, and others had a separate ground. This one has a separate ground lug. Later models they just grounded that to the RCA cables.
The Duals are a favourite of mine too. My first proper turntable was a new Dual 506 in 1981. Enjoyed looking in today. Thanks 12Volt...Also I have got no aggravating questions (I can think of yet)!
Nice job on the Dual 1214. The moment I saw the power stay on, I knew what the problem was. I worked in an audio repair shop in Honolulu back in the mid and late 70s. The Hawaiian salty air tended to dry out and gum up the mechanisms at an accelerated rate, and our shop overhauled a huge number of turntables suffering from dried grease. We had a guy who did almost nothing but overhaul turntables, and he could do a complete teardown and service in about a half hour to 45 minutes. These were great units. I still have a 1219 from that era, and it probably needs most of the work you did for this 1214 except for the tonearm part.
Yes I did the gummed up mech on another video a few years ago. Fixed hundreds of these back in the 80s. We have the same problem here. Salt air, as this town is surrounded by water.
When I got those 2 cheap receivers with turntables built in, one had the 45 adapter for the auto changer. My electronic stuff has been banished to the garage by my better 3/4 . I can't wait to see if I can get 1 working, I haven't listened to my records in over 30 years.
One thing to be careful of on the 1214 is often the mechanism will move enough to release the idler wheel and stop driving the platter, but not enough to turn the motor power off. I had one do this recently. Therefore, the motor continues to run ALL THE TIME, even when not driving anything. As you demonstrated in fixing this one, the movement must be effortless as the power switch takes extremely light pressure to activate.
Loverly job dave :-D I've done a few old decks that were gummed up and it's always nice to get it all free and working like it should. i was supprised by the broken arm joint, i can't imagine how someone could do that. That's the problem with a magnetic picup, something like a 2mv signal high impedance, just asking for mains frequency to induce 50/60 hz into the output wires.

I think mine is haunted, works then takes the day off. I was wondering if you've done a video on the stacker not working? The machine goes through the motion bit record doesn't drop so tone arm turns off. Any pointers please.

Hey sir, I have a DUAL CS 505 - 3, IT has a loud buzz, both channels, when the extra earth is attached it does make a slight difference but still buzzing, tried another amp & power supply, prob still there, would you be able to advise me on the first things to check ? Cheers, Mark.
Lovely video. Funny to see that most of the issues you show are sort of general for these duals. I also own 2 duals 1214s. One is running great, but the eldest one (CS12) will start to create a motor humm after running for some time. It's only audible near the motor, not in the speakers. Do you have a clue what that is?
I think I missed the fix for the ground issue you were having. Was it actually in the contacts in the headshell, or did you have to add a ground wire to the unit? Thanks!
Take a small 6x6 cardboard box and turn the table upside down resting the platter down on it. You'll remove the spindle, of course, first. You have an instant way to rotate the unit any way you need to to work on different parts as you can rotate it now. I've been doing this for years. Make sure, however you have the clip in place or hold on to the platter as you turn it over.

Nice old Dual, the cart is a nice Grado ZT I think it is. It's the predecessor to the current Prestige series, same body design and stupid easy to align thanks to the relatively square body. I have the Prestige Green 1 on a budget Kenwood belt drive table from the mid 80's and performs very well on said table. Lucky find this table. The only thing I worry is the stylus, it looks like it might be severely worn or is a conical.

I learn a lot from your posts. I broke off the head shell end that holds the cartridge to the tone arm of my 1229Q . Do you think I can epoxy it or do I need a new tone arm? Can just the head shell be replaced and attached to the tone arm? As such where could I get that part? If not, where can I find a new tone arm for my 1229Q?

Those goddam headshell contacts are a pita. I'm working on a 1219 and I lost the bloody cam gear spring. It's a tiny little "w" shaped spring that sits in a little divot on the main cam and the only thing holding it in there was a dab of grease. Well, it gonzo and now the auto start won't work. Any idea where I can find one of those things?
I was considering buying some Deoxit D100, but was unsure as it's so expensive and was thinking "can it really be THAT good?"... Well, seeing what it did to those contacts in the tone arm in 30 seconds flat, it's surprising if you're not sponsored by them because you make a really compelling case for investing in a bottle... I like Servisol too but might have to give the old Caig a shot at the pots on some of my kit...

So during the next cycle, does the tone arm have to overcome the force of the on/off switch, as if doing a manual start, or is the on/off switch held on position when there are stacked records in the spindle?
@@Boytotoboy yes it goes to neutral position. That doesnt move when the arm moves to the center of the record and trips the mechanism. There is an adjustment for the pick up position I have done a video on this adjustment for dual.
12 voltvibs hi and happy 2019 i have a dual 1257 and like you i have the humming i had it hooked up to my yamaha vx-r592 but i try it on my onkyo a-44 amp on my dinner table and there is no humming at all and i also put the tuner onkyo t-44 on and still no hum please help

I could hear the wow and flutter, pitch variations, before you serviced it, and I could hear it at the end of the video after you serviced it. It's still an idler-drive turntable, audibly. Uggh.....
Most of these dual idler turntables are pretty good. They all have the dried grease problem just due to age, but if you service them every few years they keep on going. There was a bad motor on some, namely the 1249 and 601. They shipped with either an SM840 or SM860 motor. The SM840 has known speed start up issues. Some times it will start the right speed, and other times it starts really fast.
@@12voltvids Dave, Thanks very much for the information. Many years ago I had a Dual 1225 that I bought new. Eventually, it had the dried up grease issue and I threw it out. At the time I didn't realize grease could dry out and it could easily be fixed. Sigh.... The good news is that I saved all the goodies, so if I run across one that's missing the cartridge assembly, record spindle or record stacker-thing, I'll be good to go.
It was. Didn't you see the base? That is why it was given to me. The guy that owns that AR that I fixed the motor control board and put a new motor in gave it to me and 3 other tables.
Hello. Nice little Turntable you have there, but (although the video is already an older one): The ones with 14 at the end aren´t Hifi due to the motor that is used within them. The shown Crado-system is therefore a bit oversized for this lower-end TT. I myself owned a 1224, 1225, both with Audio Technica AT91/3600 and now a Dual 491 with DMS242E + original stylus DN242. HiFi started with 25/26 within the friction wheel turntable series of Dual, you better get yourself a 1019,1218,1219,1229, because this is where the fun starts regarding to this TT series, if you haven´t already. The humming you can slightly hear is actually caused by the motor that is used in the small friction-wheel TT´s. Greetings of some random German guy passing through... 24:03: I would have used super glue. if you use the right stuff, it'll last for years. Most of the.newer type super glue, meaning Gorilla Glue or some other off Brands doesn't hold good at all. Not giving you advise, just what I'd use.
@@SweeneyTTodd No no, you didn't say anything wrong. I have never heard of GT85 myself. Not saying it isn't available on this side of the pond, but many products are only available in certain regions. It is probably very similar.

I have a 1229Q bought new in 1976, as per my manual Dual tables are grounded thru the RC cables. Thanks for the great vids.

I have 10 Duals. Two of them are 1215S and two are 1216's. I love my Duals.

Yes it picks up at the end drops another record and plays it.

Lubrication has dried up in the lower mechanism. Needs to come apart and be oiled

the wood cabinet's had to be changed in USA/Canada in order to meet the local regulations/restictions .... the 12XX Duals have no ground-wire ...
They all have the ground lug inside to connect the ground wire.

I have a 505 belt drive, but I don't consider these high end. I have a technics slm1 and thorens td165 that are much better.

24:03: I would have used super glue. if you use the right stuff, it'll last for years. Most of the.newer type super glue, meaning Gorilla Glue or some other off Brands doesn't hold good at all. Not giving you advise, just what I'd use.
WD40 is very popular here in the UK , but we also have an alternative it called GT85 similar price but in my opinion GT85 is much better
I just use it as a solvent to free up stuck mechanisms.

No no, you didn't say anything wrong. I have never heard of GT85 myself. Not saying it isn't available on this side of the pond, but many products are only available in certain regions. It is probably very similar.
