I recently drove on Benson Highway and Marsh Station Road in Vail, AZ. This is a very interesting road with a lot of history to it. The road was originally built in the 1920s as part of US-80, the first transcontinental highway, it has received many changes over the years, especially when the route was bypassed in favor of I-10. Driving east, the road begins as Benson Highway on Wentworth road next to the Interstate 10 interchange near Vail, AZ, it parallels the westbound lanes of I-10. The speed limit slows down from 50 to 25 mph as we enter the I-10 and State Route 83 Interchange. Once past the SR-83 interchange, The speed limit returns to 50 mph and the road turns into Marsh Station Road. We no longer parallel I-10 for much of the way east. A few miles down the road from there, the speed limit drops again, this time to 40 mph, as we near a historic bridge called the Cienega bridge, which was built in 1920 when the road was first built and allows us to pass over Cienega Creek and the Union Pacific Railroad Tracks. You can also see another railroad bridge to the left, which is owned by the Union Pacific Railroad and carries another set of tracks. Further east we drive over some more historic bridges which were built around 1950. Soon enough, we drive onto a much newer stretch of Marsh Station Road which was built in 2010 as part of a larger project to relocate one set of the railroad tracks and build a new interchange with I-10 and Marsh Station Road. This was done so that a low railroad underpass over I-10 could be demolished and the highway widened to modern freeway standards, as there was only a guardrail dividing the east and westbound lanes of I-10. We then turn around at the end of the road and head westbound back towards Benson Highway and Wentworth Road.
