Why U.S. Roads And Highways Are So Bad

- The roads, highways and bridges across the country are funded, owned and maintained by a complex cluster of different government agencies at the local, state and federal levels. Roads and highways are vital to economic growth and play a key role in American culture. But more than 30% of Americans say the roads in their area are in need of urgent repair.

Why U.S. Roads And Highways Are So Bad
In some countries you drive on the left. In my state we drive on whatever is left
Yes thats how it is here in edmonton ab , pot holes so deep and bad tires get destroyed 3 per year , the roads paved well last 2 to 3 years , but most roads here fall apart within 3 months of resurfacing

As a French guy living in the US, for 6 years now, I’ve always been baffled at how bad the infrastructures for transportation are. Roads are terrible with potholes everywhere. Bridges are all rusted, trains haven’t changed for 70 years. I know France is known for it’s road quality, but still, the comparison is harsh for the US. While in France the pavement is smooth, we also try new technologies to lower the road noise with the tires, or to have roads that filter the water so when it rains a lot your car will still have good grip. Some European countries, including a small part in France, are testing roads that produce energy.
I recommend the yt channel 'not just bikes', they make great videos about American and European (especially dutch) infrastructure and transportation! Really interesting to see the differences
As a Dutch guy I can confirm that French roads are excellent in general, I like to visit the northern part of France because it's close by and the roads are good. Sadly that can't be said about the Belgian ones in between
"People like to travel" actually we don't, we want a good public transit infrastructure so we don't have to deal with traffic and pollute by driving a 5 seater car with just one driver.
But 70% of Americans are obese.
I'm sure that's true for some of you city folk, but most people would rather go from A to B on their own schedule. Traffic just isn't that big of an issue most places in the US.
@n s I disagree, people never look back at history. These types of things happen all the time. The boomer generation has its own mentality and ideology, pre-technology. Before boomers, there were the Silent, Greatest and Interbellum Generations. The interbellum generation's idealism and life quality were completely insane and prehistoric to even Boomers now, society evolves and so does the quality of life, it's part of a learning curve so to speak. Millennials will take over in about 20-30 years, things will change...

You make up that 16% of people that have no clue to how the majority of us live. Your percentage also falls into the highest rate of people not traveling abroad. You can't really evolve watching reality shows.
It's time for the U.S. to seriously invest in railroads for passenger trains, both long distance and high speed rail as well as short distance regular trains. This would tremendously decrease the reliance on a road system, lead to less usage of the roads and naturally to a more environmentally friendly means of transport.
And more maitainable.
We need to really be careful about world overpopulation also my friend
Trains seem so cool but it's really for overcrowded third world countries like China. US is a nation of free ppl who love the freedom of personal cars. Go visit cities like Seattle that have monorail and see who the riders are: same folks riding the Metro in your city: poor and young minorities who can't wait to get their own cars!
@@hibbajude6971Japan has had great success with their rail system. It's often faster to take the rail than drive. The bullet train can travel at 175mph without having to worry about crashing into other cars or worry about traffic.
@@hibbajude6971 Uh what? Look at Western Europe, look at Japan. Good public transit is often the case for well-developed countries. Personal cars are not a "freedom" when you are forced to use one to even just get some milk.
Here in the Netherlands we fix roads before they really require repairs. It's much cheaper on both car and the road maintenance. And you can plan for it better too.
Netherlands is also a tax haven, where corporation redirect their taxes. Enjoy our money.
@@noldo3837 Thanks, we will.
@@noldo3837 The corporations don't "redirect their taxes" to the Netherlands. They don't pay any significant sum of taxes, anywhere. That's kinda the whole point of "tax havens". The Netherlands pays for it's road maintenance by taxing all types of fuel, cars, and so forth. Aka: the user pays.
@@noldo3837 I don't think you understand what a tax haven is. A tax haven is a place where corporations are legally able to evade taxes. If the corporation still had to pay taxes they wouldn't relocate and the country wouldn't be a tax haven. They don't ''redirect'' the taxes, they relocate certain financial departments of the company in order to avoid taxes all together. That's why it's a bad thing, the government of the country in question doesn't receive any money.
That’s also because a whole lot less people need to drive everywhere, making it less often they need to be repaired

Depends on the state, remember that every state is almost like a sovereign country in this respect. For example, my state of Maryland has absolutely horrific roads (especially in our main city: Baltimore), but North Carolina generally has very good roads everywhere.
Yeah here in Missouri, I've seen that it has better roads than the surrounding states, although Kansas isn't too far behind. Arkansas roads aren't too good, although recently in Northwest Arkansas, they are revamping many roads there, including Interstate 49, which they're also building a bypass around Bella Vista since I-49 in Arkansas isn't connected to I-49 in Missouri. In Illinois, Interstate 55 to Chicago isn't bad, but it isn't good either. And in Oklahoma, besides in the cities, the only decent roads are the turnpikes and Interstates. The ramps on the cloverleaf interchange on I-40 and US-69 are horrendous. Last time I've seen US-69 heading towards Texas in April 2019, they had one side of the highway closed due to construction
Also a fair bit of America has very rough winters. Specifically areas at 38 degrees latitude and above . Therefore, road salts are often used to prevent ice from forming on highways which contributes to road deterioration.

"YOU CAN'T CUT BACK ON FUNDING! YOU WILL REGRET THIS!" - a certain transportation advisor, Sim City 2000
It's simple. Road construction is public work. This means the lowest "qualified" bidder receives the work. This leads to companies cutting costs by using cheaper materials which in turn break down much faster. Also, in most states, contractors are not held responsible to repair damages to the roads that they constructed. So, they have no desire to produce a quality end product. Many see roadwork as job security for the future.
It depends on the contract and quality control. In England the Kent council does a complete resurfacing once every 30 years now to be more efficient. For 20 years there is basic maintenance and the council does preventative maintenance to extend the life of the road.
Exactly my thought- I see the same contractors doing the same repairs on the same roads year after year. I'm not talking about fixing potholes- bridges that were constructed without regards to the water underneath and have to be repaired 3 or 4 years in a row. Always have lane restrictions on parallel roads that aren't being worked on during those times as well.
Then there are the streets that get repaved and then dug back up so the sewers underneath can be worked on (I'm talking 3 weeks later). Good planning, city engineers!
Maybe a warranty should be demanded of the contractors who do the work, or make road construction and maintenance part of state or local government departments and take the contractors out of the loop.
Corporate Greed... Seems to be a recurring theme for why so many of the United States world rankings are slipping...
Factor in if it's built to fall apart in 5 years you have an opportunity to bid the job again. Job security. Why do it right once, when you can do it 5 times in 25 years.

The roads are bad and slow and expensive because of unnecessary bureaucratic regulations. Take the Kew Gardens Interchange
in NYC for example, it is where 678, Grand Central PKWY, and Jackie Robinson PKWY. The construction site there has been going on for years with minimal to no change. It isn’t because the government have no money but because the workers can work as long and as slow as possible and still be paid. Not to mention all the environmental groups’ complaints.
Straight into the pockets of crooks runnin the show, road condition in nyc is worse than in afghanistan
lack of maintenance and heavy trucks chewing up the roads.
I once heard a statistic that a semi truck driving over the road once does the equivalent damage of a Honda Civic driving over it 30,000 times.
Yes, our semi trucks are too heavy for how are roads are built, especially the asphalt ones. German roads and their famous Autobahn are in excellent condition and built to a much higher quality level and thickness.
...which is funny, because you don't even have "heavy" trucks.
This statement is true to an extent. There are different grades of asphalt to compensate for the "heavy trucks", so they don't tear up the roads as bad
Wasteful spending, diverting funds, grifters....
Crappy money management of the government is a major issue. Potholes literally take years to get fixed. They cost thousands of dollars of damage to cars. Not to mention they make driving much more dangerous.
This right here.
Not only that but the feds cry that the .18 cents is only worth .11 cents now when theyre the ones borrowing and printing money at astronomical rates. Theyre the ones to blame.

US : "why are US roads are bad?"
Philippines : "hold my red horse"
I know firsthand that lots of US roads are in disrepair (with objective data to back it up), but I wonder if there is a degree of confirmation bias skewing the perspective. For every problem pothole that I encounter, I bet there’s many more miles of road that I forget about because they weren’t problematic.
All solutions listed translate to the consumer paying for the problem rather than the state or the federal government. A bigger potion of our federal and state income tax should be allocated to infrastructure rather than privatizing roads to make the consumer pay more in tolls, which can rack up very quickly for typical commuters.
@@mohamedabdelrahman2285 But if the State and Federal governments spend more tax money on the roads, those taxes still come from the consumers. But yes, the only way to improve roads is to spend more money (taxes or road tolls) and one way or another that's our money.
If you collect data properly then the bias will have been eliminated.
BrightHelmet absolutely true! I wonder if the confirmation bias leads to a mostly negative public perception of the roads. I figure people are only going to remember the potholes that destroyed their suspensions and tires, rather than the thousands of miles that brought them there safely.
@@stainlesssteellemming3885 Taxpayers wouldn't pay any more in taxes than they do now if governments moved funds from other areas into ones to fix roads. For example, if we spent less money building infrastructure in Afghanistan or on planes and tanks we don't need, it could be spent on roads and other internal needs. States and cities have less sources of excess money.

One of the biggest problems are the parts of the country that gets snow because they over salt the roads which causes them to deteriorate mush faster. As an NYC resident it's a real problem

•Make roads out of steel to make them durable.
•Make tires of steel to decrease friction
•But to save expensive steel's cost, Since everyone is going on same path, decrease the width of road and make cars drive one behind another.
•We can attach all the cars.
•We can increase the size of cars to fit more people.
•And how about putting one big engine in front instead of putting engine on every car?
•We can run an electric line on top to power the car and decrease the cost and save pollution
I'll call this idea as Futuristic Track Pods.
