Under the leadership of Lisa Jackson, Apple's environment and social VP and former head of the EPA, the company is already carbon neutral within their own corporate and retail boundaries. By 2030, Apple hopes to extend carbon neutrality to their supply chain and consumers. In conversation with urbanist and spatial justice activist Liz Ogbu, Jackson shares thoughts on leadership, tech, the environment and building a green economy.

So, does this mean apple's going to let people repair old phones instead of suing stores for recycling parts of broken iphones?🙄
Right!
And maybe use standard cables like USB-C instead of their own propiety ones. And also maybe not design them to spontaneously break down after 2 years of purchase...
If Louis suddenly shows up one day from a "self-inflicted" GSW to the back of the head, we'll know who to look at…
@@wayofki Switching to USB-C now wouldn't be sensible because many accessories would need to be replaced and they're removing the port completely with one of the next generations. The MagSafe charger will most probably replace it.
That’s not what happened, those companies were hired to recycle the parts for apple and were selling off a large portion of those
if nobody buys apple, in 2030 they reach the goal.
They'll have to burn their stuff to sell carbon
They will buy other things that pollute more. It’s not about apple. It’s about the whole world. Hope this is more obvious to those with a narrow view.
That's not really how it works... The company is publicly traded and worth 2T
How'd Apple get their partner CHINA to "CARBON NEUTRAL" by 2030?
What a JOKE! 🎪🤡🎪
Haters gonna hate.
What a weird video hosted by TED, apart from the advertising for Apple, and the poor quality of footage and audio for the TED interviewer, and much higher quality of that of the Apple employee. Seems like this might need a paid promotion sign on it.
Like network 'news', at least 50% promotional propaganda...
Deleting the dislikes now.
"Carbon neutral" is of course just a marketing buzzword and doesn't actually mean they wont pollute.
Imagine thinking strip-mining litium can be offset by building some solar panels on the other side of the planet. She continues on talking with the same lunatic talking points of American & global socialist...

you mean offset the carbon footprint to other power adapter manufacture company, using proprietary port instead of the universal one, sell us a low efficiency wireless charger (without the power adapter inside the box), and making your speakers' cable not removable so you can't replace it when it break?

Wireless chargers are 50% efficient, in a best case scenario. It was so off putting for them to advertise themselves as environmentally friendly and then pull this stunt...
I'm sure that they sell their charges separately now because it's "green" and not because it's profitable LOL

Notice how the Apple video announcing this has comments turned off because they don't want a barrage of people saying right to repair!
By making a hole in their customer's pocket
That's a bad point. They've always done that
See my comment
You want cheap and care about the environment? Good luck.
They've always been expensive. Apple doesn't need to be carbon neutral, but it's choosing to be, and will accommodate those costs in the supply chain

Apple: Carbon neutral by 2030
Also Apple: let's make devices difficult to repair and last only a few years. Let's replace whole motherboards rather than try and fix a faulty capacitor or corroded chip.
Right!!!
Apple’s devices last for years though :/ I literally have a 5 year old iPad and don’t plan on replacing it until it dies. It’s still getting the latest updates.
Oh the sheer ownage of this comment...
She is like the HR goddess in a bad way. Imagine getting paid to be pretentious by bragging about how much ‘good’ they are doing for environment and diversity
I know right? First glass of chardonnay before lunch kind of sociopathy.
This is less about "Ideas worth Discussing" and more "PR for Apple".
@@LuxiBelle Agreed. I am neither fascinated, inspired nor enlightened on any level. More overwhelmed by the sheer marketing wankateering.
So many questions. Why is TED doing a commercial? How can you send phones to here without carbon? How can you talk about race stuff and manufacture in a country commiting g e nac ide? Is the phone jumper neutral? Will you stop making phones with planned obsolescence? When are you gonna make them in America?
Ive been doing my part by not buying iPhones the last few years. I still have my iPhone 6 Plus. Sure, I have more than enough money to go out and buy the latest iPhone but I owe it to the environment and to future generations to not give apple any of my money. We should all do our part by only upgrading phones when our old one is completely dead. It’s what Steve Jobs would have wanted
There has been rumors for at least a decade that apple will help you make your phone completely dead.
so an apple commercial? should be marked clearly as an ad.
So, the only way for you that something is not a "commercial" is if they talk bad and just all the bad and negative sides about a corporation, right? You don't allow space for positive commitment or results about them... because that would be a "commercial". Looser mentality.
@@daniels.os.
an intverview that is not asking critical questions, but only serves as platform to spread a predefined message is just rubbish. i never demanded negative comments. but this one sided presentation of apple as a company is clearly a commercial.
using green energy is just a nobrainer. energy cost are the biggest expensive for data centers. that's why those are build with a affordable power source nearby, which of course often times happens to be hydro power or sth. like that. same goes for recycling metals. recycling ist cheaper than smelting new ones. she simply gives some standard examples of alleged green production.
if you fail to see that this is a commercial, i can't help you.
why is apple constructing phones, where the battery can't be exchanged easily? this could lead to slower replacements, and save CO².
why is apple activly preventing small repair shops to get spare parts?
etc...
questions like that would not be "talking bad", but easily demonstrate that this video is image polishing and not an honest description of what's going on.
removing charger for to reduce carbon footprint
also changing the charger type to sell the new one seperately
I think my adblock needs an update, it should've caught this
Mine keeps slipping up more and more on actual ads, and I have changed extension again and again to try and help it.
For those talking about "why 2030, why not now?": Apple is already carbon neutral for their own offices, stores and facilities. Apple is trying to get their supply chain and logistics carbon neutral by 2030. This is not an easy task. As someone who has done work with the manufacturing industry, environmental considerations is always something that takes time. Many have already purchased machines for millions of dollars a couple of years ago, and that pollute more than they should. It is difficult to convince a manufacturer in your supply chain to spend the additional capital to buy new machines, come up with more environmentally friendly practices, etc. All Apple has to work with is the promise of orders. They do not have management level say in these companies. Some of their suppliers have somewhat of a monopolistic position in their level of the value chain, it will take long negotiations with these companies.
That or they just manipulate with their words and stop selling the parts that they cannot make any progression on. It is apple, they will go lengths to control their aftermarket, their suppliers, every facet on their products, consumer rights and the market. Also, anybody can claim that they are carbon neutral.
The little good Apple have done making their operations environmentally compliant does not offset the impact of millions of e-waste it is generating from its deposable and impossible to repair products that are helping fill the world's landfills.
@@guywiththebottle They could do better but they are already better than lots of companies out there. I hope that they treat the "environmentally friendly" thing not just a business card but also for the world. And it would be nice if they really become TRUELY carbon-neutral by 2030.
The answer to this is answered on the 2030 United Nations calendar, where the most part of holders of Apple they're part, and if you read about it it's not so good as people think the central idea is not necessarily about sustainability and indeed, to start understanding that sustainability should be the focus of everything (including even eating insects to help the enviroment), that is the beginning of an evil domino effect.
Now, The war in the replies won't make sense to you!
Let's put it clear, there are such things like China. Businesses locate production where it operates cheaply. It operates cheaply where it is powered by fossil fuels. A PR campaign for one first-world overprice-making company does nothing for the whole world.
HAHAH these brainwashed
We do have alternate universes however. If we can access that we're good
I will only be impressed if they reach carbon neutrality in 1973-until then I don’t care (!)
That’s how I read your comment. These things are not an overnight solution. You typing this comment produced some carbon. Think about that.
Nor would we want _Earth2._ It started okay but got lame.
And what about providing usb c to lightning instead of usb a to lightning that we had. I mean most iPhone users have chargers with usb a output.
Buy an android.

Who else supports Apple being carbon neutral but not supports them for not including a phone charger in the package?
They gotta make money. That's why they ain't including charger
@You have been Hacked They're going to squeeze every penny possible.
@You have been Hacked there's a reason they're a 2 trillion dollar company
@Martin Svensson They're not including chargers because they can make more money through royalties or by selling it separately for more price
No such thing as carbon neutral. Apple still relies on mining operations for the materials. That heavy machinery requires oil to power it! Solar, wind, hydro, nuclear, car batteries etc., EVERYONE is in the same boat here wither directly or indirect.
No more charger boys
So a company can declare that it will go carbon neutral by 2030 to be featured by you, or are you selling out specifically to apple?
A company that restricts the repair market, historically has delivered under average hardware solutions and overcharged for their products.
I would not be surprised if they just sold their current carbon footprint to unknown companies in other countries, like companies have been known to do in the past.
I concede the naming and quality issues. But I don't think this is so out of place in the climate countdown. The rep of apple has relevant experience. Seems more like a technical problem on TEDs end?

Oct. 4, 2013 Geek Answers: Why is all life carbon-based?
The reason carbon has this property is somewhat complicated but can be boiled down to this: when bonding with other atoms due to its natural chemical properties, carbon will form four bonds. There are only a few elements that can do this naturally. Oxygen, for instance, will naturally form two bonds (think H2O). The four-bond structure allows a wide variety of possible chains with branches that have branches that have branches. When a bonding slot is unwanted, the carbon-hydrogen bond that usually fills the gap isn’t very reactive, so it won’t interfere with whatever else might be going on in the area.

Make iPhone repairable to even open your trap regarding saving this earth.
Could do a send back scheme for iPhones? At the end of life people could send their phones back and be paid a small amount. Then parts could be Re-used in new devices and could also be recycled.

Apple products are intentionally made difficult to repair. In fact its common knowledge that if you have a defective Apple product, they intentionally make it prohibitively expensive to repair and encourage the customer to buy a new one instead. The result is, more Macs, iPad, and iPhones end up in landfills faster. Not environmentally friendly at all.

There’s a lot that Apple does, as well as most tech companies, that doesn’t align with their plan of being green. Companies are going “green”... with profit in mind.

Why not Zero Carbon vs Carbon Neutral?
Because you cannot manipulate with exact words of certainty.
They are saving costs not the environment. You still have to buy a usb c charger that most of their phone buyers will not have. Very manipulative marketing! They should be fined for these lies.
Sure, sure...
What about promising not to continuing plundering rare resources that are required for materials used in making mobile phones?

Pouring heavy metals into waterways is technically carbon neutral as long as you offset the dirty fuel used to transport and dispose of it. Also, does this cover their suppliers and partners? Doubtful.

Yeap, and charge it a hundred fold for profit for even just saying it as an ad.
every effort is welcome, but come on...Apple is one of the companies with most consumerist dynamics! If they want to be credible in that direction they should make a radical shift in all their philisophy (and probably lower a lot their profit), otherwise this sounds only as an awkward attempt to publicize themselves following the trend of the moment
If Apple cared about being environmentally responsible, they certainly would not go to the extreme lengths the do to make their products disposable and increasingly impossible to repair.
For example: their phones have embedded serial numbers on every part and connecting wire, requiring certified Apple Chinese parts, and in some cases Apple techs to conduct repairs and re-program the parts to work properly. Also in some cases there is no way to factory reset locked devices, which turns tons of phones containing rare earth metals and assorted e-waste to go to the landfill.
The same goes for their computers: it’s increasingly difficult for even skilled techs to do simple upgrades to RAM or SSD storage, or to even open the cases.
Ok that means costlier iPhones
With their resources Apple's goal is rather unambitious.
tbh who cares, the world is doomed anyway.
Eventually, probably. But until then you have apple.
