After going through a phase in my life of buying, selling, rebuying, selling, etc., I finally reached a point in my life where I'm meticulous in what I buy, and only do so after careful consideration that it's something I truly want. My collection is vast, among various hobbies, but meticulously organized, and displayed. When I get tired of one hobby, I shift to another, and move through them, circling back to all of them throughout time. All things in moderation.
I recently purged my collection and passed them onto my daughter who has recently gotten into vinyl collecting. She was over the moon as she now has some awesome additions to help her on the journey of this great hobby.
That's the most beautiful thing mate, better than passing your money to her, every album she play is a reminder of your love, and passage of your life.
That's a great idea and the best part is you and your daughter can always listen to those records together now and then or to your absolute favourites without you having the burden of storing them in your home. It's win-win. :)

Agreed. If you are feeling overwhelmed it is best to purge. I find it better to give an album to someone I know who will appreciate it. I get more value of some albums that way.

Great video Frank. It happens to us all. First ones to go are the doubles, damaged and unplayable. Next are the obscure and junk records. Third are the ones I just don't like. What remains are the ones you truly cherish and that's a collector's collection that you feel proud of and is a part of you
I love selling unplayed records these days as the credit is so good & it's nice to have the cash for restaurants , concerts & treats at the grocery store. Quality beats quantity for me.
I have been collecting since mid 70’s as a teen. I stopped in 1990 and got back into about 6 years ago buying test pressings, promos, and Japanese vinyl and loving it. I recently purged down to 3000 Albums and donated about 700 to Goodwill.
Good timing as i purged my collection this week. i had the same issue as the 1 reader question so this past week i sold off 70% of my collection.
That was about 600.
Everyday, without fail, I regret parting with my vinyl albums in the 80's to replace them with the newly-fangled cd's. On the other hand I've never regretted keeping a record. Keeping is the only future-proof option; you can always dispose easily but buying back is expensive and frustrating
Its always a sad day when you have to watch a fellow vinyl enthusiast purge ,or downsize their collection. I just built another room on to the house to add more vinyl. Awesome Video!
As far as purging, I didn't during the 1980s, and kept my collection as it is. Any collection of anything can be a bother. Album that I NEVER HAVE TO HEAR AGAIN are: "Dark Side of the Moon ", and "Hotel California ". Having a party, and you want me to leave? Spin either one.
I feel the same about 'Dark Side'. Ugh. No more... 🤦♀️
IV even selling off the records in my collection that hold any bit of value. I don’t want to have to worry about them getting damaged or lose value over time. I now like to keep records that I don’t care to much about. I’ll stream whatever I need to anyways or play a record if I’m in the mood. I’m in my 50’s now, and after almost 45 years of collecting, I don’t want to have to burden my family with all this stuff when I’m gone.
on collection size, I recently saw an interview with Barry Hinton on the Vinyl Hunters channel; the man has over 30,000 records!!

Over the years I have collected so much that it starts to look overwhelming when I would go to make a selection. When I decided to pair down I would ask 2 questions...1. when is the last time I listened to this album and 2. if this record was lost or stolen, would i buy it again
If the answer was 1. a year or longer or
2. probably not, then it was time to go.
As a result, my collection remains authentic to my current tastes. Great Video!

I like having the digital download code with the record. You mentioned the cd, my favorite packaging style is record with cd.
We recently had some hvac guys doing some work on our air conditioning and duct cleaning and the one young guy saw my records and was asking me questions as he’s a new collector. I end3d up giving him VH 1984 and VH 2 amongst others and he was floored they were records I didn’t listen to and he was stoked. I also gave him some vinyl storage solutions products to try and sometimes purging is good to inject new life into your hobby

Great response to my desert island movies or music question. I once asked this same question of a musician I knew and she answered she would take the records and not the movies. I told her yeah, but with movies you also get music. And she responded: “With music I can make my own movies.”
She had a good answer!
I'm starting to run out of shelves to put stuff, but I am someone who loves collecting, and hates giving away anything that I have like one copy of, or have unique variants of. I've also accumulated tons of band merch over the past 5 years, so what I plan to do and am doing, is for my cds and cassettes, selling off duplicates of albums, like not different pressings, but if I have more than 1 copy of a certain pressing, and selling about 50% of my band merch. I'd rather do that and make room to ad more.
I just cant bring myself to purge. It would be like saying good bye to a friend.
Hi! I've noticed that when I have read comments from those who've purged, they quite often seem to regret doing it.
I haven't listened to any of my vinyl for months now and have stopped buying for financial reasons (I'm so broke!)
I know I'll be listening to my tunes again sooner or later though...
But I do feel that if I were to let go of any of my music collection, I'll regret it at some point, just as so many others have.
I've learned so much just by reading other peoples' comments! 😊

Instead of taking my 'purge' vinyl to Goodwill, I gift them to some of my younger friends who are just getting into vinyl---they LOVE it!

As regards Reverb, I purchased The Mothers of Invention album Light Meat.
It is a reissue of the album Uncle Meat plus extras. The newer version is taken from the original 60s release and is superb. I was not 100% keen on Uncle Meat 80s version due to the Reverb, but now think it is superb.
I recently purchased a cork and rubber "ultra thin" 2mil limited run platter mat from VSS, and it has become my favourite almost immediately after trying it. I thought it might be something that you could review for us. A similar type would also be great with your logo, I would definitely purchase one. Love your channel.

I have been collecting since the early 80s. I think I can safely say I have never gotten rid of any piece of music I have acquired. I like having the physical media. I don't want to rely on other services. I don't want to miss out on not having it if I already had it. I want to have the music on hand if I ever feel that I need it.

Great video Frank as always. I think purging is healthy. I call it my Operation ShangriLa and have been purging in phases every 2 years or so my whole life. Not just records!
I've purged my collection a couple times. I've cut it down to albums I really want to listen to and not include albums that I feel I SHOULD collect.
The concert film loophole is a good one. Was thinking about that myself.
I have 35,000 or so Lps. I used to collect books, stamps, antique clocks and radios and movies but I purged most of that stuff. I also dumped 20,000-plus Cds, when I moved back to Canada from L.A. The vinyl though, is still with me and growing. In the last three or four years, I have been given, literally, thousands of albums from other people who are purging their collections. On your other comment - Funnily enough, I have a birthday coming up and the first two Cinderella albums are on my wish list. I will brace myself for the reverb.
Ultimately a collection is what you want it to be. Like it was said in the video it is all to be fun. If fun for you is a house full of records or a storage unit, or whatever grand size, that is up to you. I purge every 6 months, I got the core collection down pat, everything else get scrutinized. Sometimes I find a better copy of something I have. This happened to me this weekend with Neil Young's After The Gold Rush. I can purge the lesser copy. To me, my father in law bought years ago a radio station's vinyl inventory. That inventory is over 100,000 records. My brother in law and I - both of us are big music and vinyl collectors, don't want the burden of this. The Father In Law really don't enjoy the collection, just enjoys the "trophy" per se of the collection. He usually goes after the brother in law and my collection. I look at it like this, if every day you spin 3 records that you listen to, in a year that is 1080, my father in law won't in his lifetime and I don't think even in mine remaining will listen to that collection. If your collection is functional, purging has to be a function. If your collection is to have everything and be like an archivist - then the word purge is a dirty word. Again goes back to the original thoughts - this is supposed to be fun and what you want it to be.
I've purged my record collection a couple of times and I find I sometimes wish I hadn't. But in the end I am glad to get rid of the dross. Most of what I've gotten rid of are albums I found in cut-out bins, sometimes as cheap as 33 cents. After spinning them I realized that there is a reason they were in the cut-out bins in the first place. They sucked and no one wanted to buy them.
I like Bandcamp because of the option to download in different formats, including lossless. Also, the digital download is included if I buy the record or CD.
The most sickening story I ever heard about a massive record purge was filmed in Alan Zweig's 'Vinyl' documentary during which he interviewed Canadian author and broadcaster, Geoff Pevere, who admitted to tossing 2,000 records into a dumpster, a well-hidden dumpster too, so they wouldn't be picked over by anyone. Uuuuuuugh! Haha!
Great timing, Frank! I was pulling records to get rid of when I thought "let me put RUclips on the television" - which I rarely do - and the first video that pops up was this one. 😆 Yes, thinning the herd is a regular thing unless one's tastes never change or one never makes mistakes when choosing which records to buy. As for the Canadian band quetion: Forgotten Rebels. They look like fun; I saw them a lot when I lived in Buffalo and they'd cross the border from Ontario to play shows in local bars and venues. I hope all is well!

not record collecting per se. But I used to have multiple bookcases filled with books. Mainly all from used bookstores. And when I moved South I purged them all. Gave them to a Veteran hospital. The guy who helped bringing them in was thrilled.

I don't collect records...but I do try to occasionally purge my various collections. Here's the MOST important thing to do - When you do SELL your excess...PUT THE MONEY TOWARDS debt....IF you have debt. Then...and ONLY then, if you don't have any debt should you go and purchase more. You may just find that selling collectibles are fun and enjoyable. It's also quite satisfying when seeing a fellow collector get excited ABOUT buying your excess.....in other words, it's nice to know it's going to a home where it will be LOVED and enjoyed.

I purged some music years ago to the point where I'm satisfied with what I have. I may download a song or a LP here and there but that's it. I stopped buying in bulk in 2019. Right now I'm going through the collection and replacing the "snap crackle pop" records with clean copies. I don't need a music service with all the music I have THAT'S ALREADY PAID FOR! 😄

Once an album fails to get me excited or interested in playing it for any reason, I won't hesitate to get rid of it. I recently came across my CD of Sisqo's "Enter the Dragon" and put it on in the car for a hit of nostalgia and enjoyed it again, though I could go another 20 years between listening and be ok.
I had a big purge last year, from 200 LP’s down to 103. Sold those records that I bought because they are fairly rare, yet sound great on standard cd. Got £50 each for original cover editions (ie: controversial cover art) of G’N’R Appetite and Lies, £40 for a Japanese Iron Maiden - Live After Death, the rest I accepted £300 for the lot.
I did later spend £35 on a Japanese cd of Appetite For Destruction with the robot/monster cover and £5 for a cd copy of Lies with the ‘Welcome to the dark ages’ headline.
Frank, having just over 1,000 albums I told my wife recently that I'm probably gonna scale down about 10% of the collection...was on vacation this week, barely did 5%..hard to let go..but as I'm doing this I still find more to add..

Awesome questions today. As far as purging? Maybe I will in the near future once my wife retires and we relocate to an in-law suite with my stepdaughter. I have 2 kallax 2x4 shelf units now (about 1/2 full) so if I move I'd get rid of one along with the records. My collection is slowly growing as I complete discographies of certain bands or artists. I'm going to set up a cleaning station soon. And clean my collection. I might find some lps that I can live without then.
I agree with you re: desert island. Movies would be the best.
I enjoy videos like this as I don't get a chance to talk to many people about my hobby and it's interesting to find out what other people are saying.

If I purge anything in my collection I’ll turn around and buy it back. Learned that the hard way when I went from vinyl to CD long ago.

Frank...repeat after me....Purge is BAAAAD! BAAAAAD! I made the mistake of purging some of my vinyl when I was in my late 20s, and I've regretted it ever since. Some of the stuff I purged has made it's way back into my collection, but it taught me to NEVER purge unless you have more than one copy or a digital copy of it. And I miss the digital downloads a well - I still prefer physical media of some type over just streaming, although I do both, and digital is better than NOTHING. But I'd still prefer a CD or Vinyl over both. And you will need to record and show us the aftermath of the Sherry visit, and how badly she kicks the crap out of you for disturbing her girl time....ROTFL! Yes, 15 years ago I purged part of my collection and regretted big time, the lost in both sentimental and monetary.
I've purged on and off for years (moving, wanting to streamline, etc). No more! I'm keeping every single record, CD and DVD that I own. Told my wife that day I'm gone she call a local record store and they will send someone out to buy the collection.
I started collecting about 3-4 years ago and now I'm about 15 shy of 300!!! Do I have fillers that I got for cheap? Yes! But I do need to purge some 45's that I don't listen to at all.
In regards to digital downloads, one label mentioned a few years back that the percentage of downloads in comparison to sales was now in the single digits so they just stopped offering them. Totally understandable.
Hi 👋 i have the soundtrack to my life on cds. I have been collecting for a number of years now. Its music from the 1960s onwards. I still buy them too. I listen to them alot. I get great pleasure from them. Im in my sixties. From Carl.
When you talk about purging the record collection, My biggest feeling of guilt is not getting around to playing some of the older albums in my collectiion, because the new stuff takes up the priority.But would I get rid of then- not a chance. I had also noriced that more recently albums are not giving a digital download witth vinyl. If you have puchased the album, why not give the consumer a digital version as well ?? Poor Sheri by the way, having her relaxing bath interupted ha ha !!
When I was ripping all my tapes, etc. to mp3's as backup I decided that any tape I have to fast forward over a song, and any lp where I lifted the needle to not rip a particular song, then those went to donation, yard sale, etc. In other words if I don't enjoy it end to end it needs to go. That made the process easier. It still took many years to finish. The result is about just over 18000 songs which play on shuffle via Winamp every night. Whee!
I slim my "multiples" often. An example: I went from 5 Dark sides town to 2. 4 Devo Debut down to 2. Etc.
Purging and regret I feel that usually you collect items that have a significant at some point in your life. If it is something that is meaningful, you hold onto it and play when you feel nostalgic. A record collection is your own personal photo album. I have bought records to hear a new artist or genre. However, if it doesn't spark a specific memory or experience, I look to sell it or pass it on to someone who can appreciate it. Discogs and eBay projects a specific selling price, and that's when people regret that you could have had something valuable to sell for something more important in your life I have purged to bring income for my family when in a crunch. Again, it's what is meaningful to you.

For Q2 I would metion the option of ripping your vinyl to digital copies with a quality DAC. Ive started doing this in recent months and even did a video on the topic. Really enjoying hearing my own records / collection (old pressings, occasional crackles etc) when Im on the go and mobile rather than the overly compressed and often brickwalled Spotify options. I was thinking I need to purge as I have so much to listen to, then I bought 10 CD's on the weekend. My birthday is next month & I know I will be off to the local record shop. Oh well...
This is why I am downsizing and being very intentional about the pieces I actually will collect. Limiting it to the ones that mean the most to me
I haven’t purged, but I think I’m about to. Gonna start from A and go to Z… And yeah, the late 80s hair metal doesn’t stand up too well these days.

Hello Frank ! I currently have exactly 472 albums. To complete my collection , I’m missing 17 I want. That includes 4 grails. Then I’ll have all music I’ll ever want to listen to. From classical masterpieces , delta blues , 50’s rock , motown , 60/70’s rock , glam , punk , metal , synth , pop , funk , reggea/ska and all the fantastic stuff from the 90’s , up until today. I will not reach 500. My collection is purged , and It’s great. Since I’m Swedish , I’ll pick a Swedish band to party with : The Hives.

I used to skateboard in the 80's and listened to Suicidal Tendencies. Still have albums and cassettes but I can't listen to them now.
I don't actively collect variants although I do have some. I will buy a variant if the price is right, it has a different cover like Zeppelins In through the out door, Split Endz true colours, The Police Synchronicity.
I use the random selection feature in Discogs to help me decide what to listen to. This forces me to listen to my lesser favorite records.
I've thought about purging, and have often not known what to listen to even though I have s tonne of records (choice paralysis I think they call it) . But the discogs shaky random showed me the way forward 👍👍👍👍

Seeing as most of my albums come from Bandcamp/obscure metal record labels, I've become spoiled and get a little bummed when they don't come with a code to redeem for digital listening.
I just took a bunch records I had on the floor and in the hallway to a toy store that had a bunch of thrash metal CDs I’m trading for!
I’m 63. I’ve purged my collection by giving to my kids and grandkids. Most of them are thrilled to get their hands on ancient artifacts. Buy them a good starter stereo. Some music. Teach them how to care for it. If they get into, cool. If not, you at least exposed them. Their choice. My 20 year old grandson is talking about buying reissues of Metallica, Megadeth, Billy Joel and The Beatles! I’ve done my job.
For me i really miss the DL Code in todays Vinyl. For me it is much better than Spotify and also you have to pay for Spoitify too when u wanna hear something without Ads. I Love to have a MP3/FLAC Version of the Vinyl I have if i don't have the CD after all and even some CD's (especially from the end of the 80's) haven't a good Soundquality. The Remaster or the Pressing later is most time better.
Was thinking about the Canadian band that I would want to party with Rush & TPB’s would be awesome they could bring Sebastian Bach with them he also did a great Cameo with the boys!

I have a 2016 US pressing of Black Sabbath’s 1st album, & in fact it is a gatefold. Only difference is the inside is black instead of white

I did the big "Purge" back in 2016. Between 2007 and 2014 I moved 5 times and after the first move, one realizes that while having 3000+ is cool, when you have to move it turns into a nightmare. So, I sold half my collection and made it more manageable. Now, I'm starting to realize I may need another "purge" 😂I'm at the point where it's quality over quantity....
I’m bad with CD’s. Would buy at garage sales (how much for them all). Have thousands of them and paid very little (.25 to .50 cents each). I’m realizing I need to purge, so I go to local record shows put them at $1 each and move 200-300 each time. Purging actually is therapeutic for me.
I'm going to try(famous last words) :D & not add to much more to my Record/CD/Games collection. I like it when I don't have to much to. I 'try' to get what I really really like & that is it(it's difficult tho) :D
I have close to 1000 LPs, not counting 12" and 7" singles or the 750 CDs in my collection. I've been collecting and purging from time to time, since 1979. The growth creeps up on you and you need to soberly decide whether an item should remain in your collection. Would you regret it years from now and buy it again? It has happened a couple of times. But when you purge, say 5 records, you can now buy that expensive first pressing or UK/Japanese import you always wanted without using your money. Quality over quantity. You don't need 20,000 albums in your life. Keep it small. Even my almost 1000 items are beginning to alarm me.
I would pick movies over music. Maybe that's why i usually end up throwing on 2001 A Space Odyssey so much. Not to watch it. But to hear it.
The corporations/stream services can make your favorite music unavailable on a whim. Get physical copies of what you love. Also, what ya gonna do if the internet/cell service goes down for a long time?
Some of my best albums are from the 60's on the other hand some of my worst albums are from the 60's. I get tired of the same old stuff, makes me feel old too.

Having thousands of records is like avoiding eating steak, when steak is your favorite meal. Sure it's more variety, to rarely have it, but you like steak best. Steak is what you ENJOY more! If you have steak a few times a month, you don't get tired of it. You ENJOY it, and enjoy it more! Playing your favorite albums 5 or 6 times a year will not make you get tired of them. Playing Dark Side Of The Moon 5 or 6 times a week will make you tired of it; like when we were a teenager. Some people end up with thousands of records and LESS HOUSE, by exploring all kinds of different artists. But people who actually seek to have that many records; might have a problem. Instead of playing your favorite albums; and they are your favorite albums because you enjoy listening to them the most, your time is divided up and you end up listening to much less great albums instead, instead of your favorites. A person with only a few hundred records probably enjoys their collection more than people with thousands of records. Seeking to have that many records is hoarding and an obsessive compulsive disorder. You will need 3 lifetimes to play your records enough times each, to really fall in love with with that many of them. You only have a certain amount of listening hours in your one life. Based on having an avg.of 9 hours of listening time per week, my computer says anything over 428 records is irrational. And records in general will never be like gold. Gold is rare and is considered desireable by just about everybody. Lps will be all but forgotten in 30 years or so. Probably!
The furniture in the lounge room dictates how much I collect.
Once those spaces are filled I’ll get rid of CDs and records I’m not listening to make space for media I really want.
Frank I think in a way you’re missing a major point about collecting at least vintage vinyl and it’s not just listening to the music but it’s the hunt for hard to find albums. Also understanding that it’s a very tactile hobby the physical part of cleaning the record reading the liner notes etcetera. Albums are musical history that you can touch. It’s like reading a book rather than viewing your kindle.
As far as culling your collection it’s an opportunity to share your collection with other people by giving them music they may not have other wise listened to.
Some people are collectors, they may not even unwrap their records never mind listen to them and that’s fine. If you collect because you enjoy listening to records then I recommend purging. I’ve been collecting again for 5 years and I’ve purged 3 times. Better to sell 20 duds and buy 4 or 5 gems that you love to listen to.
I’ve been trying to sell 323 LPs here in Germany with local pickup only and nobody is interested! I was hoping to get 100 Euros for the lot, but no bites at all. Admittedly there aren’t a lot of key albums or artists in the batch, but I still think it’s a good collection for the price. Nobody wants it so no purge or soup for me!
Sometimes I will go through my record collection and do a little “house cleaning”, so to speak. I will form a modest pile and ready them for sale on eBay. I am often faced with the dilemma of posting them on eBay, which involves a great deal of work with taking pictures, doing the write-ups and then finally getting them posted onto eBay, only for many of them not attracting a single “watcher”, let alone a single bidder! What do I do with these? Normally, I sell them to the used record shop for far less than what I paid for them. After doing eBay for the last dozen years or so, I have come to the conclusion that the people browsing eBay are only looking for Elvis, The Beatles, Dio, KISS, Bowie or Dylan! Anyone else just doesn’t sell. Would you have any suggestions on what else I can do to save time listing on eBay and still be able to get a decent price for the records I no longer want? Of course, I could donate them!
When I find music I will never listen to again, I just get sad, and put it back on the shelf.

Green day, Foo fighters and Weezer are a couple of band I can't listen to any more. One problem I have with purging is I sometimes buy back some of the albums
I've been pulling albums to cull for a couple weeks now. I am getting rid of albums I don't listen to and anything less than VG+.
You raise a good point about purging albums that are less than VG+ ... I kinda like that.
