Amazing how two of the best were from the same era. This is a masterclass in boxing.
Clear Hearns win tbh. Took no fewer than 6 rounds (arguably 7), plus two knockdowns. Ray just had that flash to him man. I swear he could hypnotize judges with it.
Apparently, knockdowns don't count for corrupted judges. But I know the reasons behind the so-called "DRAW"...do a third rematch of these two great fighters to bring fans and 💰 to the Strip.

Yes they have and sometimes were so obvious about the fix they didn’t care how it appeared. I watch a lot of Olympic boxing in the Cold War era and it was laughable at times how decisions were political.

A great action fight. Might be the first time I've watched it since the original broadcast. Hearns was widely considered to be shot coming into this and though he performed a lot better than expected did still show signs that this was the case. He struggled to fight off the back foot - usually a sign that a fighter's legs are going - and couldn't get off with his shots as fluently as he had in the past. He also tired quite a bit by the middle rounds, though in fairness this was a tough fight and as the telecast mentioned, staged in 90 degrees heat. Leonard looked like an ageing fighter. Gone were the rapid combinations that he'd shown 27 months earlier against Hagler. He was slower, easier to hit and although he lasted the 12 rounds better than Hearns he also found it tough to fight at a good pace consistently.
Neither were what they'd been, making this a grueling slug-fest, rather than a truly elite quality fight. Hearns would amazingly carry on for another 17 years, though he'd win only one other major fight, for the WBA Light Heavy title against Virgil Hill in 1991.After losing his rematch against Iran Barkley the following year - a fight in which he definitely looked finished - the rest of his career felt like an irrelevance.
This would be Leonard's last somewhat good performance. He looked awful in winning a boring, lopsided decision over a slow Roberto Duran 6 months later, one of the worst "big" fights I've ever seen (he'd average just 36.5 punches per round - his tactics consisting of circling Duran outside of punching range for almost the whole non-event). Duran, meanwhile landed an average of 7 shots per round, completely squandering the momentum that his win over Barkley had gained him. That fight encapsulated the growing pointlessness of the "Senior's Tour" period of late-80s boxing. 14 months later Leonard would drop down to Light-Middleweight and be totally outclassed by WBC champion Terry Norris. A foolish comeback attempt in 1997 would see him embarrassingly stopped for the first and last time of his career in 5 rounds by ageing, blown-up former Super Featherweight and Lightweight champion Hector Camacho.

Simple maths if the other guy wins enough of the rounds outside of those knockdowns. I mean Hearns should probably have got this, but it's not the highway job people claim it is.

Sugar Ray is certainly a great boxing talent but these lopsided decisions giving him a win or a draw greatly diminishes that. He was down twice in this fight. Hearns won this fight. And the little pretty boy Sugar still thinks he won. LOL

That combination by Hearns starting at 41:20 is just awesome and absolutely annihilated Leonard. As Leonand picked himself up off the canvas at 41:30 the weary look in his eyes tells you that he knows that Hearns was the better fighter.
I watch that one over and over. Nothing better than seeing Ol Sugar Ray Loudmouth get knocked on his ass.

Yeah Hearns scored a couple of knockdowns but that doesn't mean an automatic win like most people think. Leonard also had two huge rounds where he almost stopped Hearns including the 12th round where Hearns really got beat up bad. Hard to give the fight to a guy who got beat up the last round. A DRAW seems right to me

I think Ray came back in the fight he took it to hearns ,few more minutes and i think Ray would have knocked him out or the Ref, would stop the beating .Hearns was def. taking a beating in the last round .

This was one of the best fights I’ve ever seen. It was close and the judges got it right.
If Sugar Ray had Dundee he would've won easily and not been in harms way so much. Those body jabs he kept throwing that got him knocked down twice should've been to a minimum.. Why would you repeatedly make yourself shorter against an already taller fighter? You create angles, then counter off of him extending his reach at odd angles like in the 1st fight. Hearns was too easy to be hit in the face against great fighters.

before this fight Hearns had been KO`d by Barkeley and knocked down by James kinchen - SRL figured Hearns was finished and ripe for the taking and thats why he granted the Rematch at this time - but he was wrong Tommy rolled back the years and should have got the decision

Ray was a Great Fighter and So Was Tommy, But Hearns won that fight! Tommy Hearns always had a suspect chin, if not for that, I don't think anyone would have beaten Him!
Tommy was robbed. This was a really entertaining fight, but what really sticks out for me, is just how much their skills had eroded since their previous clash, in 1981 (8 years, as you would expect). Good old Ray, only risking the rematch when all the world thought The Hitman was shot... 😂

Leonard wobbled Hearns in 5th.Leonard got knocked down in third but really was more of a push down but was effected by a right hand prior to that.I thought is was a very close fight.If it was another 15 round fight .Leonard would of KOd him in 13 or 14.They had even exchangesLeonard wobbled Hearns at end of 9th left hook.11th round Hearns with knockdown.Hearns in deep trouble in 12th took punishment needed another round so Leonard could finish him.I gave Hearns an edge for the 2 knockdowns but he was lucky it wasnt another 15 round fight.
Legends both men very close fight had Hearns not dropped Leonard twice a draw would be fair enough but obviously Hearns did drop him twice so should of been the winner even though he was clinging on for life at the end he still stayed up on his feet and Leonard didn’t so yeah Hearns deserved the win and got a draw sadly

Herans didn't win except on a weak point system. He was holding on for dear life from a ass whooping in that whole 12th round. That wasn't champion stuff. Didn't get the nod. Great fight. Should've fought another 3 rounds. A draw. Tommy gave up n tried to coast. Cost him.
