So I live out in the desert it is so condensed with airbnbs. Lots of airbnbs are not booked currently to be honest. It’s also hard for the permits, they just put a short term rental ban in Joshua tree it’s been capped, it’s also just super hard to find good work. There is def potential if it’s a long term plan like yours but it’s really saturated out here.

Gonna be a squatters paradise. According to the court here they have more rights than owners! Good luck with that!
Sadly now locals can't find rentals. Rental prices are ridiculas and now they want a person's income to be 3x the rent. Majority of jobs are entry leval pay & lots of retirees & people on fixed incomes. Just hope this goofy fad stays on the west end of the valley with the crime they're bringing.

I said this is another video but make sure you orientate the house towards the views obviously but also towards the south! Because then you'll maximise your light throughout the day and won't be in a dark living area without much natural light. In Australia where I am it's the opposite and you want a north facing house. It's a big priority here when buying houses so I wonder why it isn't mentioned more there.

this is really cool. i guess the advantage of building from ground up is you can really make it as beneficial as possible for an airbnb. so like prioritizing more rooms, fitting more beds. more open spaces, open kitchen/bar. so many possiblilities. this will be fun to follow!

Cool! You may want to follow online or read up on the people who love Joshua Tree park, as I know they have some strong opinions on visitors who don't take care of it very well. By building an airbnb you're inviting more people in, and you may be able to help those people understand what is good behavior and what is bad behavior in the park by just providing it to them.

Levi Kelly has a RUclips channel dedicated to tiny house AirBnB rentals and many places have multiple tiny homes on the property to maximize profit as well.
It's a good channel to get inspiration too, but maybe downsizing the house and building several of them instead could increase your revenue stream. Especially since you have the acreage to work with.

Are considering setting up solar and a home battery when you build the house? I don’t think it would add to the cost too much and Joshua Tree appears ideal for solar. Over the long term you get a reduction in operating costs which is good for the bottom line in an Air B&B. Just as important you will have reliable energy for the home in case of grid failure. You may get some solar tax benefits as well. Toss in a charging port for an electric car and it is another selling point for your B&B!

Awesome! I love what you’re doing with the land and house plans! Best of luck! I so dig this type of content -getting to hear your thought process in these bullet like but conversationally presented conclusions makes this fun and entertaining. Keep up the great work! Excited to see where this one lands!

From your other videos I’m sure you’re already researching this but try as hard as you can to build a sustainable home on that piece of land. Place windows on north and south exposure, build large eaves and overhangs to protect from sun, look into passive style homes. That land and property isn’t very sustainable on its own and you could use any extra help protecting it from the elements and cooling it. Good luck on your next adventure!

It’s interesting seeing people continuing to buy Airbnb properties when most people (unless a large group) are traveling with hotels again.

I disagree. I’m using AirBNB and VRBO for vacations. I just got back from New Orleans and had a wonderful week. Great Property($1564 for a week) on Canal street and the street car came right in front of the house. Prior to that I spent a week in Belize in a 2 bedroom house($994 for the week) on an island. It had a rooftop patio with an ocean view and close to the main beach. You can’t get the same experience in a hotel especially if you’re bringing family and close friends.

Also with the coming recession and interest rate hikes, I don't know how Airbnb people will be able to charge so much soon. I feel like its huge risk at this moment of time. By the way, what is out in Joshua Tree? It just looks like an abandoned town, why would I stay there on vacation?

A ton of people still use Airbnb! But I agree in many cases that hotels are better. If you’re traveling in a major city a hotel is probably better. If you’re going to a remote location with a group of four or more people in Airbnb is probably better. There’s just different circumstances that they thrive in imo

    Shelby,
I wanted explore the thought process regarding another SoCal desert property.
Was any consideration given to the 22 year on-going drought in the southwest? Especially since we know Lake Powell and Lake Mead are drying up and water is going to be an issue down the road.
My other concern is that the Salton Sea is drying up and it is thought that toxic dust storms and severe stench will reak havic in the Coachella Valley and beyond.
These concerns could not only impact tourism, but, the property values.
    Your thoughts? Thank-you

How do you overcome that? do you know about it?
    Please let everyone know.
    Good luck 👍 ☺️

the new rule is that 10% of permitted homes can be short-term rentals - currently, JT is at about 6%. Therefore anyone considering building a short term rental is risking capital that may not work out -

Some of the drone shots are telling. You will be able to look back and say to your grandkids, "We were one of the first in this area, it wasn't as crowded as it is now! Only a few nearby neighbors". Of course, in the future they will be able to get water from the air and electricity from sand. Good luck!
