As a foreigner, I understand very little about the tradition surrounding the Grand National, but from the few races I've watched here on YT, I see you have some very old-fashioned procedures, to my view. 1. Lifting an almost invisible tape in front of 40 horses to start a race? What? 2. Flailing an almost invisible red flag to signal a false start? I know, there must be course officials all over the track, but when you're in a horse running at 35 mph, how are you going to notice?
Richard Pitman still reports for At the Races, but since the BBC chucked most of its racing coverage I haven't seen much of him; however, I don't think much of his style. It would have been better to have interviewed Julian Wilson or Peter O'Sullevan. There was no-one person to blame, but lessons were learned and the course is constantly being upgraded and maintained.
They could not have re-run the race because those horses who ran the 41/2 miles would have been at a distinct disadvantage. When would they have managed to reschedule - very hard to do. Lessons were learned that day and it was just one of those things that sometimes happens. Get over it. At least no horse got killed unlike other years. The people whingeing over their lost bets were pathetic , shows you just how awful people can be when things don't work out.
on 13th apr 1993 all bbc news programmes got a new look, each news programme was computer generated with a glass with bbc news logo, then would fly back to reveal the presenter
I was 10 years old and yes I picked the winner that didnt win Esha Ness only because of Elliott Ness lol does any1 know where I can find any news footage of the 1989 Grand National and what happened to the fences????
@AndrewJS: which bits were fantastic? The recession? AIDS? The IRA bombs everywhere? If you’re selective enough, you can class any era as “fantastic”! Rose-tinted nostalgia is a terrible human trait.
H'mmm they could at least give a symbolic trophy to the "Winner" since he risked of his own to cross the finish line first. And two or three competitors fell anyway!
I'M NOT BEING SEXIEST HERE BUT WHAT WAS THAT WOMAN JOCKEY DOING RUNNING HER HORSE OVER THE TAPE AS I THINK SOME OF THE FAULT WAS HER BLOODY WOMEN!!! NO SERIOUSLY THOUGH WHY DO WE EVEN NEED A TAPE START IN A RACE THAT IS LIKE OVER FOUR MILES ANYWAY
The classic look introduced on 31st October 1988.

“Britain’s most popular sporting occasion”
???
It was the most watched sporting event of the year on TV.

And 10 days later, a new look of BBC News was introduced.
Yes, and not for the better. The simple desk in the newsroom was 100% more better than their "virtual" news studio.
No more fascist symbolism.
True!! And a very rubbish new look. The BBC should have kept the old opening credits and nice theme tunes for the news programs.
@@Martin9476 don't like the big screens of now. Presenters walking around make me dizzy.
Spot on my friend.

I'll be uploading one of those news clips at some point in the near future.

I'm sorry you missed the 80s and early 90s, they were fantastic.
Yeah the rave scene was amazing. But the early 00's were still decent. It's shit now though.
