Agreed. Not certain if they will be at the end of the year, but surely right now we can only say Oregon is and has been better so far.

The point that the AP rankings have been around for a hundred years and kind of built into the sport is like trying to make the argument for other outdated things like, Oh I don't know, pick one of many...rotary phones to cell phones, moving from horse and buggy to an automobile, giving minorities and women the right the vote, improvements to thousands of different processes in history. In all of those cases there was always push back. A lot of people hate change.
And yes, we are talking about a sport. But the same principles remain. What do rankings really offer? Debate. Arguments. Speculation. Anger. Biases. And honestly, possible corrupt dealings in placing certain teams and conferences in positions to make it to the playoffs or the championship game. Money, power and greed.
But the media gets to keep busy and paid for stirring up the controversies with rankings is offered as an excuse?
I would prefer that we step into the future and do what everyone would agree to, which is determine who the best team(s) are on the field and not from rankings or in a committee, but on the field.
    How do we do this?
Create four Power Conferences of 16 teams each with two divisions of 8 teams. Divisions would be structured by geographical location.
Each team plays 2 "Pre-Season" games vs other Power Conference teams in the first 2 games of the season. No games vs lower division teams. NO MORE CUPCAKE GAMES. Note that preseason games have no impact on making the playoffs. Bragging rights only.
Each team plays all the other 7 teams in their division and 4 teams in the other division of their conference. The inter-division games are rotated each season.
The winner of each division plays in the Conference Championship Game.
The winner of each CCG receives home field advantage in the first round of the 8 team College Football Playoff.
The loser of the CCG plays on the road vs the winner of another conference in the first round of the 8 team College Football Playoff.
First round matchups between conference winner/loser are determined by drawing.
The semi-final games will be hosted by a revolving Bowl each year.
The Championship Game will be hosted by a revolving Bowl each year.
The college football Champion of the Power Conferences would be crowned by winning on the field and not because they were handed a position determined by a committee.
I am not saying it would be easy to determine who the 64 teams would be to make up the four Power Conferences. But they could use what some soccer leagues do by having teams dropped and added based on winning percentages. Although that is another discussion to be had.

Tell me why Texas is ranked 5th. Who have they beaten? The only good but not great team they have played this season bent them over the table and did bad things to them in front of their home fans. I’ve actually seen some rare moments of honesty from SEC homers this season about how overrated Texas is, but only going as far as admitting that Texas was given a cupcake schedule in its welcome to the SEC, and it’s only to suit their own argument about their team. Those same hypocrite homers would have no problem turning around and pointing to a loss to Texas as being a “quality loss” for their team if it suits them 😂 You want to keep crying about Penn State and the fact they have only beaten scrubs and lost to the only good team they have played, how about we have this conversation about Texas first seeing is how they actually have Texas in the top 5. And how about Miami at 4……. they had to barely escape with wins against Virginia Tech and Cal…… 😂 They trailed by double digits at one point……. to Duke 😂 They have no defense. Miami and Texas are just as big of frauds as Penn State

Then I guess our local HS's 8-0 JV team is better than the varsity which is 6-2. Given the drastic difference in skill level between the conferences, inter-conference records are meaningless. The SEC has won the NFL draft 18 years in a row, never been close. Since the CFP was established, the SEC put 10 teams inn the title game in 10 years. In the BCS era... the SEC had 9 teams in the tile game over 9 years.
By your reckoning, Army is as good as Oregon ad all are undefeated. It's who you beat and by how much. Oregon has 1 win over a currently ranked team. Boise State gets its ranking from a close game against Oregon...their other wins are all nobodies....as are Oregon's.
Simply put, there's not enough data as yet to make a determination ... years aga, Clemson never had anyone in conference to challenge them ...last year it was FSU, this year it is (oops was) Miami.
In the SEC, any of these teams could beat any of the others in any given day ... with where the game is played (Home vs Away) oft deciding the game.
Georgia Bulldogs ... tough game against OleMiss and Tennesee
Texas A&M Aggies .. could challenge Texas
      Texas Longhorns .. see above
Tennessee Volunteers ...tough game against Georgia
LSU Tigers ...tough game today against Bama
Ole Miss Rebels ... tough game against Georgia
Alabama Crimson Tide ..tough game against LSU
      In the Big 10... it's
      Oregon Ducks
      Ohio State Buckeyes
Indiana ? Same record as Oregon but none against a ranked team.Oregon got nobodies. I'm not saying Oregon is better or not as good as anybody;I am saying that their strength of schedule hasn't given us anything to make a valid determination.

  • @johnnaylor1706

Is Oregon better ? No enough evidence to tell. The Big 10 (er Big 18) only has 4 ranked teams...so there's really not much to go by. Yes, they beat Boise State but the only reason BS is ranked is that they had a close game against Oregon. Ignore that and the resume is weak.
Gotta give cred for the win over OSU .... but they had the Home Field and OSU had 2 turnovers; Vegas says the Home Field is worth 3 points or so include that in the mix and ???? And Georgia lost on the road.
In short to my eyes, they need another signature win against another Top 10 team to make that call and Georgia's win is bigger than anything Oregon has.
Simply put... Insufficient data to "do the math".
    Preseason SoS's:
    Georgia 9
    Oregon 34
