This is by far one of the best reaction videos I've ever seen! From a long time fan of metal and seeing how into you're getting, WE WELCOME YOU AND NOW YOU SEE WHY WE LOVE IT SO MUCH!
When it comes to Metal music I've had friends ask me "how do you understand what their saying? It just sounds like noise". I usually compare Metal music to beer. It's a acquired taste. Some people like it some people don't. When I first started listening to Metal honestly, I couldn't understand what the lyrics were. The longer I listened and the deeper I dove Into the genre. The more I started picking up on the lyrics and way different artists enunciate their words through there vocals. I love all grenes of music, Im all for rocking the fuck out while bumping "Frank Sinatra" full volume, windows down, rolling down the street in my car. But to this day, Metal was the first genre I got into and it's still my favorite.
Tom Morello, Lajon Witherspoon, Alexis Brown, the *entirety* of Death, that singer from God Forbid, Bandnerds, Black Death, Bad Brains... But don't judge him too harshly. He said this is his first time *EVER* listening to metal; I doubt he researched in his spare time.
The history that this song breaks is incredible.. Damn I wish you heard these guys starting from a decade ago till now.. This is the song all of us KSE fans were living to hear
Mr. Lajon Witherspoon from Sevendust, Mr. Derrick Green from the band Sepultura and Bonz from Stuck Mojo, all three men are African American metal singers just off the top of my head. And Mike Smith from the band Suffocation was an inspirational drummer who was also black.
"There's a black dude in metal??" Check out god forbid, bad brains, sepultura, skindred, body count (ice t) and suicidal tendencies. All are established veterans in metal and punk with black singers. Straight line stitcj has a female lead singer and boy can she open the heavens
For understanding the lyrics; You've developed an ear for understanding rap/hip hop because that's what you've listened to. You got accustomed to the speed and beat and you're able to key in on the consonants because you've trained your eye. In rock/metal, they focus more on specific vowels to get the tone they want. So your ear needs to focus more on vowels than consonants. Acclimating to the distortion just takes time.
You picked an extremely iconic song by Killswitch! Jesse ( the white dude) was the original singer who had to step out for a while. Howard stepped in for years until he couldn’t tour anymore. Then Jesse came back, there was never any bs between them and us KSE fans absolutely LOVE seeing both of them together! SCREAM FROM YOUR STOMACH, if you know how to scream you know the words lol best of luck!
Howard Jones is the singer in three Albums, The end of heartache, As the daylight dies, and Killswitch Engage. He in my opinion(yes I know its just my personal take) is the best singer who was in Killswitch even tho there has been only two.
I can’t remember if this is the right name but a lot of metal singers worked with this lady who made the zen of screaming or something along that. She pretty much tells you stuff that helps you become better without destroying your vocal chords.
@0:24 - Too LIT Mafia said "OOOFF!" as it came it with power! Then, @2:14 Welcome to the culmination of so many KSE fans' dreams! Howard & Jesse on an official track! #WeCanAllDieHappyNow
in able to do 'metal vocals' also known as a inhale & exhale growling/high scream/pig squeal etc, there are many techniques. the best way I learned was by finding my own technique instead of looking through all these videos, the one thing to bear in mind is to never use your throat for this type of vocal as you can tear your vocal cords in your throat, damage your voice in many ways and so much can go wrong, it is best to use your diaphragm, the start of with a exhale grunt whilst mouthing Oh, and the lower you but your voice the lower of a growl you can go. same with a scream, except for saying Oh you say AH, both of this style though it is important to tense your throat muscles but also relaxing them when appropriate. before attempting the style it is important to do vocal warm-ups.
Honestly after listening to heavy music so long I’ve just developed my ear and I can fully understand what they’re saying. The more you listen the easier it is.
I just want to add, metal usually gets a bad rap (no pun intended) for being about nothing more than rage, death, sacrificing puppies to satan, etc... But you've made a fantastic choice in selecting Killswitch Engage because they are known for having very positive lyrics/messages. "This Fire" is a particular favorite of mine as I find it very inspiring. It's about believing in oneself and never quitting. The chorus goes "Even through the darkest days, this fire burns always". I would love to see your reaction to this one.
And in reply to your question, after a while of listening to bands you begin to learn how their vocals are and what they say easier. And if you are someone who does gutturals and screams as vocals you also have the ability to be able to hear what's been shouted and screamed :)
Ahhh you’ve been introduced to both Jesse and Howard in the same song. Both guys are unreal… Howard Jones the best metal core voice of all time in my opinion.
Hell yeah man. I dunno what it is but I feel like black vocalists just sound more powerful when they scream and growl or even do power vox like Lajon Witherspoon from Sevendust. Other metal bands with black lead vocalists are God Forbid and Backwordz
it's almost like living in a place hearing someone with an accent, after a while you develop a sense of adaptability to understand what they're saying more clearly. Human brains are incredible
Shamus Garrity absolutely and fuck it, sometimes one has to read the lyrics as they listen in order it understand everything with clarity and you do truly start being able to understand it without reading anything but it has to be burning in your soul first and foremost
This band has written some of the most positive inspirational pieces ever. If you only knew the magic in this song you would be brought to teaes. Welcome to the metal family. Horns up.
For real!!! This song brought me to tears with the powerful meaning in the lyrics. It's fucking beautiful. It's intense and aggressive but the lyrics are so beautiful and uplifting and positive and encouraging

I had the same problem with rap and I only have to use lyrics sometimes now . I have to use lyrics for cannibal corpse but really you don't want to know what he is saying. Really you don't .
Howard "the black dude with the voice" Jones is an amazing vocalist and the former vocalist of the band. And the current singer was the singer in the band before Howard
I love when new people get into metal, regardless of the subgenre. I'm not an elitist type to say "that's not real metal! Wait till you hear Cannibal" and whatnot. I WANT people to like metal more. I loved your reaction and how much you enjoy yourself listening. Subbed! Keep it TM! Let em know!
"THERE'S A BLACK DUDE IN METAL MUSIC, WITH THE SAME TYPE OF VOICE, BRUV?!" My man, you're hilarious always loving your stuff. Howard Jones is an absolute legend.
Metal vocals in a nutshell: -strong abs for good amount of air pressure -engaging different sets of muscles in the throat (vestibular folds) and taking advantage of movable tissue (in the soft palate) -years of practice to master the technique without straining the actual voice BOOM. There you have it. Metal vocals.
Other great black folks in metal: Howard (KSE), The Entire Band of God Forbid, Lajon Witherspoon (Sevendust), Carley Coma (Candiria), Jada Pinkett-Smith (Wicked Wisdom) there are so many. Welcome to the Fandom!

@@doctajuice It depends on the point of view. My initial thought when he said he'd never heard metal before was: "That's a hell of a jumping off point"
Another good start "Bleed" meshugga
I thought the same, i mean Metallica or Megadeth hell disturbed. Good intros. But New K.S.E. damn. Just skipped the kiddy pool and jumped of the cliff instead.
Killswitch isn't absurd for a first timer. It's good "intro to bands with harsh vocals" kinda stuff
@@doctajuice It depends on the point of view. People who think slipknot and disturbed are heavy as a chevy Killswitch is excellent for because they're just damn good. for people deep in heavy metal it seems like an intro band def, but this song is absolutely amazing no matter how you slice it. so long comment short you nailed it.
@@dwaynesundown2038 yeah i'm into a lot of stuff wayyyyy heavier than killswitch so it's pretty tame to me, but kse has been making solid music for years and years. Great song.
They use their diaphragm and gutterals as to not damage their vocal cords so if you learn properly you can find your own scream safely
Cant forget yrs of practice
@@fallenhopes83 definitely
"You can find your own scream safely" to the uninitiated that would sound really weird lol
@@victorsupreme214 ahaha yeah out of context, its a bit sketchy
anbody tell this guy that Ice-T himself has a metalband since the 90s
Bodycount represent. They even done a song with Amy Lee from Evanescence recently.
Bodycount is the shit
2:34 Hell Yeah there is! That right there is Mr. Howard Jones! Seriously, a godly vocalist! One of the greatest in the genre!
NEVER PAUSE ON A GUITAR SOLO! The lyrics are usually in the description, or sometimes other channels will upload the lyrics.
There are websites that help too
@@willpestka2745 🤣🤣🤣 I guess from now on I'll do this first.
[ Sarcasm]
2:03 that metal impression was LIT man 😂👍
Killswitch is my all time favorite band, I got into them with Howard Jones but I like how far Jessie has come with his voice. Also as far as black dudes in metal check out Sevendust!
Yeah I'd love to see him react to sevendust
I'm in the same exact boat, been listening to Killswitch for about 10 years! Sevendust is one of my other favorites as well.
Listening to KSE since 2003.
God forbid... pretty much the whole band lol
Goddorbid
He needs to check out Killswitch Engage "In Due Time" and Children of Bodom "Follow the Reaper".
Yes children of bodom
being a fan of KSE since their inception, I enjoyed both Jesse Leach's vocals and Howard Jones', they both have an incredible level in their approach, this was a big deal seeing the two of them tackle this track! simply amazing
Bro for sure, some of the best vocalist in metal have been a brother. Check out the band "Fire From the Gods" you'll love it
Anything Sevendust will make you happy that you listened to it. 🔥🔥🔥
So much yes for this comment
Yessss 🙌
Sevendust is ear sex bruh
This is a good way to broaden your subscribers man I love metal and hip hop this is good stuff
This video is a perfect example of why representation is so important! So dope seeing your reaction when Howard came in! Love the channel man!
Bro!!!! I love this band! You gotta hear "My Curse" by Killswitch. The second singer was the lead back in the day. Thats was my fav song by them.
Jesse the white guy is the original singer he stepped out then. Howard joined. years later Howard left and jesse came back .
Personally love Howard's voice but both are amazing
React to Kill Switch Engageme "End of Heart Ache" PLEASE!
You picked arguably the best metal in the last 5 years. That was amazing to watch as a lifelong metal head.
I might consider it the best if "Beyond Oblivion" by Trivium didn't exist.
@@JacobAvnerPr1mus3 that or if fear Inoculum wasn't out either.
the level of mind being blown in this reaction
has me cracking up big time
The black dude is Howard Jones. He’s in Light the Torch if you wanna react to his vids.
Check out the jasta and howad Jones tunes.
@@jr-bp6nu brrrruh I love chasing demons
I forgot they changed their named from devil I know to light the torch
Orrrr listen to older Killswitch songs :)
